’s last day at the BBC. He’s given a lifetime to public service broadcasting and journalism. In normal times, we would be lined up in the newsroom to applaud his enormous contribution — spanning four decades. Let’s send him a message of appreciation today.
A rousing performance of 'Fairytale of New York' was given by Glen Hansard and Lisa O'Neill at the funeral of Shane MacGowan in Nenagh, Co Tipperary. The performance was greeted by cheers inside and outside the church |
@RuthDE
Ruth, honestly. When you find yourself talking this way to a grieving mother shortly after the death of her daughter, it may be time to step back and reflect a little.
Tomorrow is a proud day for the city of Belfast: the unveiling of a statue of Frederick Douglass. Having escaped slavery, he became the most significant African-American abolitionist voice of the 19th century.
“If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.”

If there’s one thing we can all do to help the Donohoe family and to assist the police with their investigation, it’s to mute or block those posting unhelpful or hurtful speculation.
If I could interview Van Morrison (no chance of that), I would ask him why he’s avoided writing political or protest songs throughout his career until now. He’s lived through epochal moments in political history ... so, why now? Is it just the personal inconvenience of lockdown?
I think we all have friends and family members who struggle with addiction. In my experience, they need love, not judgment. Community, not isolation. Hugs, not pointed fingers.
This is how Matthew Perry said he wished to be remembered.
@gemmaod1
@99freemind
Gemma — you are an absolute disgrace. This ludicrous conspiracy nonsense has less credibility than flat-earthism. And in publishing it, you’ve seriously defamed a respected journalist reporting on the murder of another respected journalist. Shame on you.
Fox, Trump, and other right-wing media accused a migrant of beating a NYC cop. Trump even brought it up during a rally. It turns out the man, Jhoan Boada, was not even there at all and was just fully exonerated.
Story...
The great irony of tonight’s farce is that the DUP went to great effort to select a secure location because they were evidently worried about protestors and disrupters outside the meeting — when, all along, the threat was inside the meeting.
Two kinds of people on Twitter: those who see an obvious typo in a tweet but nevertheless understand what was meant and move on with their lives, and those who don’t.
I’ve chatted on-air with Seán Coyle every week day for the past 5 years. We’ve still never met in person—he was in Derry, I was in Belfast. But I feel like we’re old friends at this point, and I already miss him. Does this mean we have to meet now? (Drinks on me, Seán.)
If these DC scenes were happening in any other country after an election, effectively incited by the losing candidate, it would be widely described as an attempted coup.
Far-right extremists have been gaining momentum in Ireland for years. As in other places, they often seek to mobilise further support by exploiting divisions, tragedies, economic hardship, and misinformation. All are potent events of radicalisation.
Just a shout out to my lovely dad and his team of fellow cleaners who have been meticulously cleaning the local doctors surgeries and ambulance stations during the Coronavirus outbreak to make sure they’re safe for those who use them.
He didn’t include 17.4m people in his comment: he addressed it to those leaders who promoted Brexit in the referendum without knowing what they’d do if they won.
Evidently the pressure is building in Brussels. A deliberately provocative & disrespectful statement about the 17.4m of us who voted to leave. This is a time for solutions & genuine diplomacy not insults.

I don’t understand those who’ve complained that I blocked them here and that this is (somehow) an assault on free speech.
Appearing on my personal Twitter timeline is not a human right. I block when someone is rude, aggressive, unpleasant or annoying. And if I’m bored.
A simple word of congratulations to an Irish athlete from the Taoiseach — and a depressingly inevitable thread of comments from racists and xenophobes who think only they know what Irish means.

New:
SDLP MPs Colum Eastwood and Claire Hanna will seek to table an amendment which would remove Stormont’s one-party veto — thus permitting the Assembly to elect a Speaker — and place an obligation on the Secretary of State to deliver a pay award for public sector workers.
I see some on Twitter are now suggesting that it’s Fake News to claim that Jesus was once a refugee. If they ever read the Bible, it’ll blow their minds.
Yeah, because mocking her is really funny. Anything to avoid listening to what she says. The difference between Greta Thunberg and Morgan is that she has made a contribution to our world — in helping to create a global movement in response to the global climate emergency.
Sinéad was invited to perform at a celebration for Bob Dylan at Madison Square Garden — she was to sing a Dylan song. It was shortly after her protest about the Pope and the abuse scandals in the Church. Many in the audience booed her. Then she did this.
I don’t know what’s more annoying: the indifference shown across the water to the unrest here in recent days, or the confidently asserted hot takes from those who’ve just discovered the story.

I won't post the utterly disgusting video of the bonfire "party" mocking the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire. But it illustrates how easy it is for some to dehumanise others, to abandon empathy, and, in doing so, to lose their own humanity.
I get some trolling online and some nasty, abusive communications, but it’s as nothing compared to the abuse female journalists — and women in politics — receive. Deep women-hating misogyny is behind so much of it. In fact, it’s often sexual violence in textual form.
a question for the Secretary of State: why has she chosen to make an unscheduled major statement in the Commons while Jonathan Bell is giving evidence at the RHI. Critics smell a rat: is this a distraction move by the SoS to save the DUP's blushes?
It’s very easy to think of politicians — even prime ministers — as merely characters in a political story, ideological place-holders. But they are human beings too. I say that because, frankly, I can’t begin to imagine the sense of isolation Liz Truss must be feeling right now.

I’m not sure why Jacob Rees-Mogg thinks is an insult to the UK that
@tconnellyRTE
scooped everyone with sourced-reporting on the Deal. It’s called journalism.
Back in the day, David Frost hosted two hit TV shows simultaneously: one in the UK, one in Australia. He flew to Australia weekly. I reckon Paddy can handle an 85-min flight just fine.
In one 30min Manchester taxi ride, my driver just explained why humans couldn’t have built the Pyramids or Aztec temples, how 9/11 was an inside job, that JFK was killed by the CIA, Diana by M15, that Trump won in 2020, and a how cabal of civil servants removed Boris from office.
I suspect that Prince Andrew’s media advisers will be delighted that social media is obsessing on pizza express jokes and sweating puns. Rather than the much darker story at the heart of this interview.

The item was interpreting the political significance of the Irish Govt’s 800m Euro gift to Northern Ireland, and whether it steps up an all-island economy. 4 guests; *one* of them was a nationalist. But don’t let facts get in the way of your myth-making.
There are massive floods in southeast Mexico right now.

This is happening. It’s been happening. In our time. A moral disgrace. A crime against humanity. While much of the world looks away, or even signals approval.
Savita Halappanavar’s father Andanappa Yalagi: “We’ve got justice for Savita and what happened to her will not happen to any other family now. I have no words to express my gratitude to the people of Ireland at this historic moment.”
I try to avoid life-casting on here, so please forgive this lapse. But I feel very honored to have been elected a Member of the Royal Irish Academy. Normal service will now resume.
I’ve just recorded an hour-long Zoom interview with Noam Chomsky. During one of his answers, exploring global politics, an ice cream van turned the corner outside, playing “What shall we do with the drunken sailor?” It seemed to last an eternity.I really hope they leave that in.
The cynics have condemned me for believing that “love” can change that world. Apparently I’m naive for believing that. All I can say in response is that this is my experience. Finding a way to love, and to be loved, changes everything.
It breaks my heart to speak of Paul Bailie in the past tense. He was the best friend life could afford; every encounter with him was a joy, an immeasurable blessing. I loved him like a brother and would have trusted him with my life. To his wife, my dear friend Anne, much love x
It’s wonderful to see so many people sending Gareth Thomas their love and solidarity. That he was pressurised into going public about his HIV status by a newspaper is an outrage. Shame on them.

If the DUP leader Arlene Foster can’t attend a gathering with Pope Francis, why isn’t she sending someone in her place to represent her party? All other party leaders will be there or represented.
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said tonight that a vote for a united Ireland was necessitate the creation a a new state, with a new constitution; not merely the absorption of NI into the current state.

You're using an image of Churchill in an article attacking the EU? Churchill was one of the founders of the EU. He famously called for the creation of a European Union and also called for the creation of a European Army.
The SDLP has confirmed that their former leader John Hume has died at the age of 83. One of the most significant and consequential leaders in our political history.
President Trump on John McCain: "I gave him the kind of funeral that he wanted, which as president I had to approve. I don't care about this. I didn’t get thank you. That's ok. We sent him on the way, but I wasn't a fan of John McCain."
This issue is not her age. The issue is whether the science is clearly pointing towards a catastrophe for our planet if we all fail to act, and with urgency, to deal with the crisis. You don’t need to be 16 to answer that question: the science is very clear.
"When I was 16, I knew everything, as so many teenagers do. Luckily for me, & for the planet, quite a few adults did not immediately fall into a swoon & ask me to take over the world." "Yes, Miss Greta Thunberg, back when I was 16 I knew everything too..."
Truly awful news today. Christopher was just 39 years old. May his memory be a blessing to Laura, his children, his wider family and all his friends and colleagues.
Editorial guidelines are just that — guidelines. And they need to carefully interpreted in complex situations, which isn’t always easy. But I trust a woman of colour to recognise racism when she sees it. And it’s the job of journalists to report the truth.
If you don’t come out of this quarantine with either:
1.) a new skill
2.) starting what you’ve been putting off like a new business
3.) more knowledge
You didn’t ever lack the time, you lacked the discipline
It’s worth noting that Jim Allister’s party has called for Direct Rule of NI by Westminster. Today’s Westminster amendments on abortion and marriage is what Direct Rule looks like.
Welcome to Ireland where people get away with racism! This little black girl broke my heart. Don’t skip this post without leaving a million heart for her. Make her famous…
Fantastic that plastic bag use in large supermarkets down 86% from 140 to 19 per person per year year since the 5p charge was introduced in 2015. A great example of a simple Conservative policy that has hugely helped the environment
