I feel privileged today to have joined the British government's COP26 team working to deliver the strongest possible outcome in Glasgow, including on nature. Great admiration for the hard-working & skilled officials across the government working so hard to this end.
Food systems are at the heart of COP27: a great opportunity to make progress. On behalf of the Ambassadors of the Food and Land Use Coalition, in our role as co-chairs, we call for 5 critical outcomes at COP27:
1. A quick (and selective) thread on food and climate change on day 1 of
#COP28
#COP28UAE
here in Dubai. There are several really important developments to celebrate; a few important caveats and things to watch out for; and a lot of work still to do.
Ten personal thoughts on the
@Cop26President
@COP26
presidency/process, drawing on observations and lessons learned from the past 10+ years or so of following the COP process in various guises (government; adviser; researcher), beginning in the run-up to Copenhagen in early 2009:
Very impressive & uplifting
#CountdowntoCOP
conference today, superbly well organized by
@GreenAllianceUK
team led by
@ShaunSpiers1
. So much good thought and action on every front -- culminating in a super speech by
@NicolaSturgeon
, who clearly has the measure of this brief.
Compliments to the musicians of the
@theoae
for a wonderful concert at the
@bbcproms
-- including a stunningly moving rendition of the slow movement from the Bach double violin concerto . . . one of those moments in music when time stands still . . . thank you so much . . .
A remarkable statement from a world leader to make such an explicit commitment to act on climate and rainforest protection on the day of their re-election --- deeply grateful and inspired by
@lulaoficial
commitment to the Amazon rainforest. Great news in dark times!
just about to arrive in Glasgow &
@cop26
after a long train journey from London --- hopeful for the coming fortnight & for the wisdom of political leaders; thankful for the young activists and the indigenous peoples here; resolved to redouble our efforts . . .
I made the point to the PM
@RishiSunak
today that Britain ought to honour its commitment to resume 0.7% of GNI for int'l development: he replied that it was still his intent to do that, as he is on the record as saying he would, but that it would be hard in the short-term
'Food needs to be on the negotiators' table: there will not be a solution to climate change unless we fundamentally transform the way we eat and produce our food, as well as stopping food waste'. Juergen Voegele, World Bank, and
@FOLUCoalition
Ambassador.
@COP26
The potentially disastrous implications of the war in Ukraine for global food security are clear. The equally bleak implications of the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report for the resilience of the food system are even starker.
Loved
@MarcusRashford
's book You Are A Champion -- full of wisdom and practical suggestions for team-building and winning campaigns . . . warmly recommended
@herdyshepherd1
-- wow, English Pastoral is so good. Warmest appreciation for your amazing achievement. Should be required reading for all working on food and land use in the world, from whatevrr vantage point.
A brief thread on the Amazon rainforest. Most climate science appears to indicate that this astonishing rainforest, so vital for the region and for the world, is at significant risk of becoming a carbon source rather than sink - and a savanna rather than forest in many areas.
huge praise for
@AlokSharma_RDG
--- a person of honesty, integrity, sincerity, intellect, and humility ---- whose hard work and emotional intelligence were indeed at the heart of all that has been achieved at
@COP26
an amazing group of incredibly hard-working, bright, diligent, thoughtful and committed civil servants from the UK government --- all of whom gave their heart and soul to
@COP26
over the past months and years
Signing off twitter (and work) for a week, to catch up with family, reflect on COP26, and go for some long walks through rural Sussex. Very best to all.
Proud of
@ZacGoldsmith
& a wonderful team of officials who have worked very hard all year to deliver on the promise of the Glasgow Leaders' Declaration on Forests and Land Use - and who have now launched a long-term partnership of nations led by the US & Ghana to take it forward
Major event about to begin at
#COP27
to agree urgent steps needed to halt & reverse forest loss & land degradation this decade.
This will be a key meeting - to report on progress & take forward all the commitments the UK secured at COP26 for forests & land.
a moment of calm before the World Leaders Summit Action on Forests and Land Use event at COP26 --- may the memory of this event be a blessing and a turning point for nature and humanity . . .
1. Inspiring meeting on food at
@ChathamHouse
today with
@jmojicaflorez
- Colombia's Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development
@MinAgricultura
- & senior officials in person and online from Cambodia, Indonesia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Ghana, Malawi, Netherlands, Norway, and the UK.
stunningly good book by
@GhoshAmitav
-- should be required reading for all with an interest in climate, development, environment, biodiversity, justice . . .
Very happy to see that The Prince of Wales and
@GretaThunberg
met today in Davos: two of the world's most committed and principled environmentalists, who share a deep commitment to urgent global action to address the climate and ecological crisis.
@ClarenceHouse
@WorldResources
A few thoughts on food and land use 2021. This year, and throughout the decade ahead, the world has before it a remarkable obligation and opportunity to bring about a fairer, more inclusive, more sustainable and more resilient food and land use system.
Looking forward to going back to work tomorrow, after a week off post-
@COP26
. Top priority is to work with UK government and other colleagues to start to implement the Glasgow Declaration on Forests and Land Use. Not a moment to lose!
We had a lovely
@WorldResources
farewell today for
@AndrewSteerWRI
. Lots of laughter, some wonderful stories, and a few tears. We all celebrated Andrew's rare blend of enthusiasm, intellect, moral courage, and deep commitment to tackling the issues of our time. Go well, Andrew!
very good event at the UK pavilion at COP28 on cities' action on climate and health --- inspiring remarks from Jeannette Ickovics , Susan Aitken, Murtaza Wahab, Mayor of Karachi, Sally Capp, David Shukman, and
@AlokSharma_RDG
--- who made moving remarks at the close . . .
crossing fingers for a Lula win in Brazil today --- I have faith that a Lula second term could set a new course for the Amazon rainforest and the rural economy . . . and thereby be of huge benefit to the whole of Brazil as well as to the world at large . . .
Book launch tomorrow in London at 6:30pm in Daunt Books Holland Park -- all most welcome -- Wednesday 10th April -- including some remarks from my great friend and hero
@tonyjuniper
at 6:45pm -- Ed
@NicolaSturgeon
@GreenAllianceUK
you spoke brilliantly
@NicolaSturgeon
- I was very impressed. Moral clarity, seriousness, heft, intellect. A commitment to the issues and the cause which was palpable. Please keep it up. We need you and Scotland to deliver on this agenda!
@sergio_fajardo
@matadoreltiempo
Dear Sergio, great stuff: please do a deal with de la Calle for a liberal ticket! I am telling you, all the way from Cornwall, UK!
Sad
#COP26
has been postponed, but manifestly it's the right decision. Let none of us however lose any momentum in the pursuit of a better, healthier, more resilient future, within an inhabitable climate -- for the benefit of all people, across this fragile & interdependent world
Wishing
@RishiSunak
well -- particularly hope he can find a generosity of spirit about international development and humanitarian finance, and that he will be sure to honour all our existing commitments in FCDO and make no further cuts to that spending. [1/2].
off to the
@KneppSafaris
Knepp Estate for the first time today on a
@FOLUCoalition
field visit -- hugely excited to see what
@isabella_tree
and Charlie have achieved . . . grateful to Tony Whitbread of
@SussexWildlife
for guiding us around today. Reports and photos to follow!
I am hopeful that -- notwithstanding all the challenges -- this COP can be a major turning point for the world. It is also shaping up to be a COP in which nature's full role in addressing the climate crisis is recognised more than ever before.
Looking forward to visiting Colombia next week for the launch of
@FOLUCoalition
roadmap for a new food and land use economy for the Valle del Cauca region --- a beautiful and diverse landscape in the heart of Colombia.
1. At the outset of the Global Forum on Food and Agriculture hosted this week by the government of Germany in Berlin, we are delighted to share the Food and Land Use Coalition’s new report on regenerative agriculture:
#gffa
@FOLUCoalition
10. The odds are against you, especially at this challenging time - but you contribute as best you can, and then pass the baton. And so I end by congratulating Claire O'Neill for her significant accomplishments -- and by wishing the next
@Cop26President
all the luck of the world.
Sharing one piece of classical music per day for the foreseeable to help those in search of solace: today, Bach's B Minor Mass, in a wonderful recent recording from Paris by the
@mco_london
conducted by John Eliot Gardiner.
Warmly recommended ...
Going to leave twitter until Christmas during the period of my sabbatical -- and pending seeing what
@elonmusk
does -- wishing you all health and happiness until we meet again!
A thread on tomorrow's all important
#LeadersClimateSummit
and the issues of food, land use, and nature. This is a big moment: all 40 nations present tomorrow and Friday could potentially make a significant set of commitments on these issues.
5. Sympathy for the least developed countries and the most vulnerable: it was moving to see how Fabius,
@JohnKerry
and others really tuned into the vision and perspectives of the small island states in the run-up to Paris: the importance of this cannot be overstated;
very honoured to be interviewing the one and only
@KHayhoe
for a
@GreenAllianceUK
event taking place on 6th July --- please do join us online, and send me questions for Katharine beforehand
Stunningly good book by my friend Simon Sharpe on climate --- available in all good bookshops April if not before
So insightful on the diplomacy, risk, and economics of climate change --- from someone who really knows whereof he speaks
Looking forward to a 2-day meeting on a Net Zero Global Food System at St. George's Windsor hosted by the Global Panel on Agriculture and Food Systems for Nutrition (
@Glo_PAN
) -- responsible for a brilliant set of reports written by
@DrPatrickWebb
and
@timgbenton
. (THREAD: 1/20)
found the whole programme incredibly moving -- thank you
@BBCr4today
and
@GretaThunberg
particular highlight the conversation with Sir David Attenborough
"It's not like it's going to change overnight. It needs to be a big shift"
@GretaThunberg
says she's not surprised by the current lack of action on climate change from those in power - but once we start to act "hope will be everywhere."
#r4today
2. First, the good news. The UAE Presidency - to its genuine credit - has worked hard over the past year to draft, negotiate, and agree an 'Emirates Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems, and Climate Action'.
looking forward to a week in Washington DC with my
@WorldResources
colleagues and our partners. on the agenda: sustainable agriculture and climate change; rainforest protection in the Amazon, SE Asia, and Congo Basin; restoration; and the future plans of
@FOLUCoalition
.
Back to civilisation after crossing these extremely steep jungle ravines on horseback with the expedition, something I never thought I could do after my injuries!
1. The importance of diplomacy, tact and skill: it is an incredibly challenging, intricate process. Watching Laurent Fabius at work in Paris in COP21, and
@PEspinosaC
in Cancun in COP16 (in 2010), was to observe multilateralism, diplomacy & strategy at its finest ... trust is all
Another climate meeting approaches, this coming fortnight in Bonn. The Bonn meetings are valuable & technical; where much of the real work of the climate convention gets done. And this is an important year, as the world takes stock of its progress on climate. [1/10].
Happy to pay tribute to my good friend Nick Bridge this evening -- a distinguished and kind diplomat who has been a stalwart of the UK climate scene over the past several years, most recently as the Foreign Secretary's Special Representative for Climate Change.
8. Having the integrity, temperament & skill to create a meaningfully big, inclusive tent -- an 'all of society' COP, per
@thomasnhale
-- especially at a time when the eyes of the world's young, personified by the extraordinary
@GretaThunberg
and 1000s like her, are watching...;
4. Officials: there are many wonderful people in the civil service who have given decades of their lives to serious work on climate change. As president, you need to respect them and be respected by them - as was the case for my namesake
@EdwardJDavey
and for
@michaelgove
;
4. A draft of the Declaration can be read at this link -- . One of its most notable aspects is that it commits nations to incorporate food and land use fully into their NDCs (and national adaptation plans) by 2025.
Just had my first jab - Pfizer - feeling v thankful and grateful. Lara came with me and was the star of the show. Born in lockdown, she has been a joyous companion through the year
Off to
#Indonesia
to spend time with Indonesian friends and colleagues working in the
@FOLUCoalition
@WRIIndonesia
.
Key issues on the agenda include:
1. agriculture subsidy reform
2. better palm oil productivity on existing land
3. forest protection
4. better diets
5. One Map
We call on Heads of State at the Summit to make a strong commitment to reform national food systems to deliver nutrition, equity, resilience, reduced GHG emissions, and the protection and restoration of nature.
A personal note of sadness, having spent the day with 100+ officials of the European Union working on international development and environment issues -- how sad no longer to be at the heart, as equals, of the shared European effort to broker a better world. Really very sad.
Inspired by
@CFigueres
' and
@tomcarnac
's book,
#TheFutureWeChoose
. Beautifully written, full of insight and heart, empowering and optimistic. Above all, it is a powerful articulation of the world we can still bring into being if we rise to the challenge. Everyone should read it!
Off to Ethiopia for a few days to learn more about that remarkable country's efforts to protect & restore its forests, feed its people (& the world), address malnutrition & achieve its ambitious sustainable development plans & goals.
3. Political heft is also important: watching
@Ed_Miliband
in the run-up to the (ill-fated) Copenhagen COP, with all his intellect and commitment, and with the full backing of the Brown government, was a sight to behold (& first inspired me to go into politics, not that I have);
Pleased to meet
@jeremycorbyn
this evening and to make an earnest entreaty to him that the Labour party reconsider its position on Brexit and lead the charge for a second referendum. We shook hands and he was kind enough to listen to my arguments. I expect a Damascene conversion!
Delighted that WRI & IDH have signed a formal Memorandum of Understanding to guide and deepen the work underway between the two organisations over the years ahead -- across multiple sectors, countries & commodities.
Today, 2% of all climate finance is spent on food, land use and nature: this figure should be at least doubled, with a significant % of that increase dedicated to enhancing the resilience and improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in low- & middle-income countries.
