As #SwiftAwarenessWeek wraps up, here are 4 ways you can help protect these special birds:. Install Swift boxes or bricks. Grow wildflowers to boost insect populations. Log your sightings on Swift Mapper. Speak up for Swifts & share their plight. Every effort counts. ๐

We've shared some incredible facts & photos for #SwiftAwarenessWeek so far. But these special birds are threatened. Since 1995, there's been a 60% decline in their numbers. ๐จ. Protecting Swift nesting sites & food sources is critical if they're to survive. ๐ท @CarlBovisNature

When you scream across the sky all summer, people tend to notice. Swifts have picked up names like 'screechers', 'shriek owls' and even 'devil birds' over the years. if you were to rename them, what would you call Swifts?. #ThoughtfulThursday.

Swifts are uniquely adapted for life on the wing. Tiny legs mean they're clumsy on the ground but once airborne their long, curved wings & forked tails make them seriously impressive fliers. And they are FAST - capable of speeds up to 69 mph!. #SwiftAwarenessWeek

Did you know? Swifts eat, sleep, drink, mate, & even bathe on the wing. rarely landing except to nest. They can switch off one half of their brain to rest, drink by gliding low over water to take sips, & fly through rain to bathe! ๐ง๏ธ. #SwiftAwarenessWeek. ๐ฝ๏ธ @theHALLofEINAR

Cute Swift fact: . Swifts' Latin name 'Apus apus' comes from the Greek 'a pous' which means 'without foot'. Their legs are so short it was believed they didnโt have any feet! ๐ญ ๐ . #SwiftAwarenessWeek

Swifts raise their chicks high in eaves or nestboxes, returning to the same site year after year. When the young fledge, they launch into open air. & just keep going!. Theyโll remain airborne for the next two or three years, until itโs time to breed themselves. #SpringStories
