I’ve spent 5 years (
#WTFentanyl
started 2017) talking about fentanyl myths, w/ “exposure” OD (touch or proximity/breathing) being the main one. I want that info to be available without having to reply to every tweet every day. So I’m trying something new:
One of the reasons I advocate for the incarcerated in such a relentless way? I grew up a child who believed if you made “good decisions” and worked hard to follow rules, justice was something you would receive as a right. Once I began visiting a prison (and asking lots of 1/
Earlier today, we heard an ag employer argue that passing farm worker overtime equity wasn’t in the best interests… of his livestock.
That kind of remark gives an interesting insight into exactly why legislators need to ensure fair treatment of farm workers.
#orleg
Why care about the incarcerated? Because they are you. They are your family, friends, co-workers and fellow humans most of whom experienced trauma or serious adversity early in life as SO MANY ppl do, but for whatever reason they were unable to process the emotions from this 1/
questions as is in my nature, and observing very carefully) I noticed first - that was a lie. It’s usually access to stability/resources that even allows a person to make “good decisions”. I had an amount of white privilege that protected me from having to make decisions 2/
based on survival, at least when I was young. Second, there is literally ZERO difference between the actions of a judge, a prosecutor, LE, a warden, a CO, and people incarcerated. I’ve seen all of these ppl do illegal things in the same degree and at the same level as one 3/
@WimminsRea
Been reading about Rose Hanbury and the story is kind of wild and wow does this add some layers.
Rule 101 don’t display your colonizer pilfered artifacts in your Town and Country photo shoot lmao.
Because there is not a snowball’s chance in Hades that the GOP can win a popular election rn. They saw how effective twitter was in people gathering and advocating for politics so they decided Elon is the answer. Except as I noted months ago, you can’t squash a movement 1/
Dear
@TwitterSupport
A question.
Why are ex-Twitter employees contacting pro-Democratic accounts with large followings such as my own and telling us that our accounts are being "deliberately manipulated" and "deboosted" by Twitter?
another. Don’t worry I kept receipts and even collected witnesses as I began to see how it worked because I was so astounded. Having these jobs protected these people from most of the same consequences anyone else would face. They are not better people, more moral or ethical. 4/
They are shielded by a criminal justice system that is a money making business on a level your brain can’t fathom. We’ve convinced ourselves that it’s safety, but it’s not. I in earnest believe I’ve witnessed enough to sink the BOP if I was ever called to testify in congress. 5/
When you realize the brain isn’t fully developed until age 25 it makes you think about stuff. There is a reason they recruit gang members, military, and law enforcement so young. It’s easier to train you to be ok with harmful action when you can’t contemplate outcomes yet. 💡
@RenContessa
How about all the men that gave birth and had damage done to their colon and anus feel free to comment and those that didn’t be quiet and learn.
someone deeply inside and the idea that standing up for what is right could harm them is a more powerful motivator than any I’ve ever seen. Our system of justice is held together by threats, fear and most of all lies. I dare anyone to prove me wrong.
Wow, AMERICA do you see what happens when you stand up & fight. Seattle & Portland are the absolute blueprint for what we should ALL be doing. Why do you think I watch & RT every night for 3 months. It’s what we should ALL ASPIRE to. So proud, you are warriors
#seattleprotests
I'm genuinely stunned. City council just stood up the mayor and overturned her veto. The defunding of the Seattle Police Department has begun. So much gratitude to the people who have been on the ground for more than 100 days, and those who have fought for decades. You did it. ❤️
So why don’t I? For one, the ppl I care about inside are completely disposable to this system and they will not hesitate to harm them and anyone associated with them. Most families know the things I am saying, but they are in this fight mostly because they love or care about 6/
@LibbyMbc
Things you talk about are things I’ve experienced in hospital (and we live in different countries.) For me it’s created a situation where I will absolutely not go to ER unless I’m sure I’m at deaths door no matter the pleas of my MD’s. Healthcare shouldn’t be this traumatizing.
As a person of Irish decent I try to remind myself that this history of discrimination we experienced means we should show solidarity and support for people immigrating to the US.
This St Patrick’s Day, it’s important to remember that like many immigrant communities the Irish were discriminated against and criminalized upon their arrival.
To this day some still refer to police cars as Paddy Wagons — a nod to that history.
@clairezagorski
2006 was the year Kaiser put me on fentanyl, and 2013 was the year they basically forced me to start my long process off of it. 🧐Makes you realize it had nothing to do with what was going on with my pain.
She was finally released. From now on when y’all want to argue with me about the 3 strikes law in CA this is the case we will be discussing so familiarize yourself. Your tax dollars pay for this.
Also keep 3 Strikes Project in your prayers - this is the work of angels.

@3TomatoesShort
At one point I was seeing 7 different doctors and losing my shih because they wouldn’t talk to each other and i’m driving all over timbuktu sick as a dog to sign release waivers. I had suffered a massive pulmonary embolism and I was the main organizer of the circus of healing.
I remember when I first felt this. I would go on walks with friends who have zero intersection w/prison and I would explain the reality and I didn’t understand their reaction. It was almost like I hadn’t said it. I took me so long to realize that incarcerated people tried to 1/
Abolition is about changing the conditions that lead to crime. It doesn’t make sense to continue piling resources into policing and incarcerating the same communities while knowing police neither solve or prevent crime. We need to address peoples underlying needs
@TheRealNews
if you thought 2024 was going to be less chaotic than 2023 we have door panels flying off airplanes, COVID at it’s second all time high, and the SEC twitter account getting hacked, so no.
The
@SECGov
twitter account was compromised, and an unauthorized tweet was posted. The SEC has not approved the listing and trading of spot bitcoin exchange-traded products.
It’s fairly standard for women to be sexually assaulted in prison. No one is punished because we have a very broken idea of justice in this country. Abusing people will not make for healthy accountability. Fix this ugliness.
@JudiciaryDems
A correctional officer in Florida was sentenced to 3 months in prison for sexually assaulting a woman in federal custody multiple times.
Why are incarcerated people being raped?
What laws are being passed to protect them?
Does Congress even care?
3 months for sexual assault.
@1goodtern
Imagine if we had a hot tub and told ppl oh we don’t filter or use chlorine but you’ll be fine. They would say um no thanks. People I’m begging you apply your rational thinking skills to all areas of life. What you breath is as important or more than what your skin touches!
I love this campaign
#visitaprison
It IS so important that elected officials go inside both state and federal prisons. The problem? When you come announced, the prep work that goes into the performance you see means you aren’t seeing what we need you to. Trust me.
@JudiciaryDems
@keribla
This is the worst of our justice system, the very worst.
Also Gov. Abbott must really be infatuated with karma because he is nonstop romancing her.
I hear about this a lot. Don’t fall for this stuff. If money lands in your venmo or cashapp by accident do not touch. NO ONE GIVES away free money or accidental money. And if your grandson calls needing money make him facetime you so you can see his face.
The real scam going around that regular people fall for is someone you don’t know sends you $2-3k on Venmo. Panic messages this was a mistake. Please send back I need it. And when you do you just laundered their money while the stolen proceeds they sent will be recovered from you
Reminder. I don’t clap for anyone going to prison anymore. It’s not that I don’t think we need laws or I don’t believe in justice. It’s that prisons are a failed entity. Punitive abuse doesn’t equal accountability and doesn’t foster growth and true safety of society. 1/
@cwebbonline
@Sen_JoeManchin
This is not the flex Manchin thinks it is. We elect leaders to listen and pivot as the needs of their constituents change and develop. He works for the people, and he’s constantly forgetting this. Sadly, it’s reflected in the state he represents.
Please do not DM me about serial killers. Or gangs. I am not standing up for crime when I criticize the system. Nor am I ignoring victims of crime. I am insisting we work harder to truly find a way to promote pubic safety on the front end of problems.
@theglowingstars
This is very interesting to me. I know post election we are all criticizing how parties message - but I think this is what effective messaging with facts can look like. Not intrusive, not filling up your phonemail or mailbox and still reaching a wide audience.
I can’t believe that LA is even considering Rick Caruso for Mayor. With just 50% of the primary vote he can take this office. This man can’t relate to 90% of ppl on planet earth. Los Angeles represents forward motion, and he is a giant step backwards.
Had to blow up
@RickCarusoLA
’s press conference after he just filed for mayor. Los Angeles doesn’t want a fucking billionaire as mayor. Especially not one that sat on the board of commissioners. 40k unhoused in the city and a billionaire is going to fix that? Fuck no.
In a very carceral state, Alabama's parole board was at least granting a lot of releases. But the Gov got involved, & grant rate has collapsed to 4%.
Why? One parole board told
@boltsmag
she feared for her livelihood if she voted to grant parole.
NEW:
Also for all the ppl that follow me for different reasons other than CJ advocacy and go into judgement mode when I tweet Roberto and I’s story, pls remember no one should be judged permanently for mistakes they made as a teen or one period in time. Humans are fallible. We grow.
If we don’t stop this then there won’t be enough prisons to hold everyone and not only that but we are forcing people into secretive corners again and this has failed us completely in the past, it’s why the war on drugs garbage. Punishment does not equal healing.
Across the country, prosecutors are charging people struggling w/ substance use for *murder* when their friends or family members accidentally overdose.
“Help! My friend’s overdosing. Call 911.” “You’re under arrest for murder in the first degree.” More:
Part of advocating is knowing that people aren’t going to like you. That’s just part of the gig. People like to stay cozy inside of comfort. Change is very uncomfortable but it’s a really important part of life. In fact it is what life is. That’s my philosophy.
My therapist is amazing, and always asks valuable questions about advocacy work. Today she asked me to describe the worst things we see in prisons. I told her just a few and she was pretty taken aback. She said aren’t there laws to protect ppl from this harm? I said well if a 1/
I’m surprised how my tweet about our failing prisons/ criminal justice system took off. Mostly becuz I talk about it a LOT. The good news? This means more and more people are realizing we don’t have true safety or equitable justice. Take one step in your life to help change occur
@1goodtern
@stepshout
I told my ex that we are getting my son the bivalent this week. Having a kid in school is a major problem as no one masks and teachers just don’t take mitigation seriously. I think they feel their job is already challenging and I agree. But longhaulers/dying is more taxing imo.
I’ve been watching live footage of

@haleyjo261
@1goodtern
It blows my mind how this has happened. When COVID hit, I already had all the masks anyone could need at home. Why? My son survived a stem transplant for metastatic retinoblastoma. Masks were normal protocol at his hospital, the outpatient onc unit, our group living housing etc.
@WealthInc247
Controlling behavior, constant highs and lows and the use of grand gestures as apologies but no changes or compromises. Not feeling accepted for who you are.
We capture people in cages when they do something society thinks is a mistake. Then we find a LOT of other ways to torture them there physically and psychologically. Then we also torture their families. THIS WAS OUR BEST IDEA for creating accountability, safety, and healing!??
Thank you for talking about this. My sibling is a lower level manager and this is her store’s union - she won’t cross the line. So I know she is risking her job starting tomorrow to stand in solidarity with

Jon Stewart and I are aligned on this subject. Our war machine funding is completely out of control because it lines the pockets of so many already wealthy people. To me, if you volunteer your life in exchange for military service we owe you ALL of the care/support necessary.

So BOP made calls free for COVID. Oh, but you can only make 1 call every 90 minutes. Oh, only allowed out of cell for 90 minutes. Oh, only 2 phones work now so the line is so long it causes serious hostility. Why is the GOAL to crack ppl!!?
"Luciferase" comes from Latin luc- (light) & -fer (carrying). Maybe a poor name choice, but it's not related to the devil LMAO. Imagine a person named Bob turns out to be an a-hole then everyone hates Bob and the name Bob. Then you name your cat Bob. Now some people hate your cat
Roberto told me today the BOP only allows you to take 5 books when you transfer. This is stressing him badly as his book collection is a huge part of what inspired him into so much growth. Of the things we discourage the incarcerated from owning, why would books be one of them?
So prison staff can sell fentanyl to incarcerated people and sexually assault them but definitely don’t let anyone be exposed to a dangerous crossword puzzle. Got it.
A Florida prison refused to deliver copies of a local newspaper to an incarcerated subscriber, claiming that a puzzle game in the publication “may be used to create coded messages indecipherable by staff.” New from me with editor
@nickpwing
.
Please stop saying people fighting for criminal justice reform or abolition do not think of/fight for victims. My family has been the victim of violence and we’ve also been system impacted. This is usually the case. We all want to heal ppl - but torturing ppl doesn’t heal anyone.
@clairezagorski
Wow the appearance of film coating on the Adderall fakes have gotten way better than what I’ve seen. I’ve mostly seen pressed opioid/morphine fakes and they were so
powdery. The color here gave it away but if you haven’t taken it who would know?
Ok nobody laugh at me. I was today years old when I figured out
@shonhopwood
served time in the BOP. I was following him because he is an amazing attorney and I just thought he happened to have a lot of knowledge about federal courts and prisons. Wow what a story. 👏
You can’t blame mental illness for mass shootings in order to avoid gun regulations and in the same breath, be against universal healthcare. If we do have a mental health problem in this country, it’s exacerbated by refusal to provide people with healthcare and resources
in a way that healed/set them up for success. This is so common. You know I’m mostly describing every human. But, because of racism and serious inequity in systems/resources in this country some ppl are way more likely to be punished for this struggle than others. NEWS FLASH 3/
I said what I said. It’s because I’m sick of reading prison inspections and legal suits where incarcerated humans are medically neglected, abused, and treated with indignity with no accountability and very few ppl in leadership position are willing to say ENOUGH. It’s inhumane.
Prison politics drama is the very best way to take focus off the injustices that go on inside, the staff shortages etc. It helps to build the argument that tough on crime is vital, bigger budgets are essential and lockdowns are necessary. 💡
Even though our Thanksgiving turkeys Liberty and Bell are from Minnesota – they’re named after the famous Liberty Bell in Pennsylvania.
And today, they have a new appreciation for the words “Let Freedom Ring.”
@prisonculture
Yep and I’m too old and have survived too much to skip out on bravery anymore. If I die in a cardboard box, I’m going to do it being brave and feel good about it.
Today Nov 30th is a day for joy. Roberto just passed the math portion of his GED. He has his GED! It took him so long, so much perseverance. He is a Mexican citizen serving life and did not give up trying for this goal his whole bid. Moral of story DO NOT GIVE UP. 👏🏆📚 so proud
Why do I find this so motivating lol? It made me lift weights today and if you’ve ever been detoxing off opioids for pain you know that any exercise makes you want to vomit, but it really helps me personally to do small safe workouts.
My mother is in the ICU. I’m at the rest stop in Lake Shasta to sleep. I have to drive 900 miles alone to get to my family at OHSU so my hope is to make it to see my her. She faces surgery early Monday that will be extremely risky. She’s had lots of trauma & I want peace for her.
This week marks 3 yrs I’ve been off fentanyl/morphine I took 15 yrs daily for endo. As of this week I’m also off meds to help me sleep incl. edibles. If you suffer from chronic pain, I’m not sure I advocate this exact path,but each person has their own journey & I support you.1/
I need to think on this bodycam on law enforcement thing more. I just have this weird feeling it leaves me with. Why do we have to babysit someone we actually pay a lot to supposedly be a protector? This is why abolition is a thing.
Just stop with the “pro-criminal” bull. Supporting someone incarcerated doesn’t mean I’m pro crime. I don’t support violence. This is a stereotype and assumption. I’m for reducing harm on everyone, but when the justice system itself is abusive/harmful it can’t produce safety.
#Abolition
It’s a vision of the future. The problem w/ trying to emulate Norway model here is their goal/purpose is different than the U.S. Here we’ve got to address root causes of crime and redesign systems to provide ACTUAL safety. GO watch the whole segment, she’s🔥

This video is appalling. Why give Lyrica/Robaxin /Tylenol instead of low dilaudid/perc for acute inpatient pain? We are lying to ourselves about safety/efficacy. Short term acute pain can be handled by opioids safely. Those 3 meds can be suppressive yet not as effective!
There are no good ppl/bad ppl. Just all people who need help and healing. So why would we take humans and then torture them and mistreat them because they were unable to help themselves? We’re so indoctrinated to think harm is the only way to meet harm and it’s affecting us all.
Innocence Project does incredible work and I’m so happy for Jabar.
However, prison takes a terrible toll on humans and since our country wrongfully kidnapped him how do we give him 25 years back?
At a Manhattan courthouse in November, Jabar Walker was finally exonerated after serving two decades in prison for a double homicide he didn't commit. If not for his persistence and the efforts of lawyers, he would have served his term until 2046.
Her story is like mine. Endo made me violently ill at age 15 but I didn’t hear a diagnosis until age 33, and the disease is still terrorizing me in my 50’s. I will not allow young women to suffer my same fate of a life torn apart by
#endometriosis
I’ve been naive about JBs imprisonment. I thought he would do his time & get a college education & become regimented. I underestimated the experience. You would have to have a well of strength to survive & come out ok. But how does a kid who is growing up on the inside do that?
I really need ppl to understand this is why I advocate for abolition of prisons. I value personal accountability VERY much, but there are way more affective routes to accountability than punishment that creates lifelong PTSD. Data reflects the lived experiences ppl share.
Society often thinks of incarceration as something people live through & from which they can ultimately be released. But the reality is that time spent in prisons & jails can create a host of collateral consequences that haunt people long after release.
How can there be so many truly motivating social justice advocates, legal reps, scholars, social workers, formerly incarcerated role models that are amazing...and yet we still pour money into imprisoning ppl & herd ppl into cages daily. What is not happening that needs to?
These numbers are the proof that incarceration has failed us. We have a failure to treat humans properly and help them heal on a emergency level. Stop telling me tough on crime works.
@denise_dewald
My hematologists office was so overwhelmed this week that by Thrs I couldn’t even get a hold of the exchange, much less anyone at the actual office. Wild times.
So, looking at this, can you guess why incarcerated ppl avoid admitting the need for help? If you have anxiety, fear of close spaces, etc etc this is torturous. We treat people in a way that should make them feel very violent. Then we act shocked when they do.
I’m so sorry you (or anyone) is treated this way. I hope everyone listens/sees the great work Richard does to heal communities and thinks twice about why we treat the incarcerated this way. We’ve normalized this as response to mistakes. Imo abuse does not foster accountability.
In 21 years, I spent 1000's of hours in cages waiting to be seen by a doctor and even to be released. How many people are so dangerous that they need to be locked in cages? Cages of diamond metal mesh, each roughly the width and height of a coffin. There is no room to sit down!
If closing a prison down means we won’t have enough incarcerated firefighters to save ppl, then the real solution is to release those firefighters and pay them a regular firefighters salary to do a difficult and dangerous job.
I find that in general ppl who rant about fear of crime do not have much knowledge about how the actual criminal justice system works. Olayemi always brings the facts (backed by LOTS of data and her lived experience as public defender) so you have real knowledge.
It’s time to DEBUNK all the lies, copaganda, and fearmongering around BAIL REFORM and crime in NYC!! Not only has bail reform not caused a rise in crime, felonies, or rearrest, but it’s been incredibly successful!
