More elections are already around the corner. And Democrats hope to build on their gains by flipping more offices: in Tennessee, in Georgia, in Florida. And that's just the tip of a busy month, incl. plenty of intra-Dem clashes: My new guide, just out:

On the heels of their sweeping wins in November, Democrats have opportunities to gain further ground in December runoffs and special elections. They’re hoping for upsets in conservative territory,...

2/ And in the mayoral runoff in Pflugerville, the Dem-backed candidate Doug Weiss leads 55% to 45% so far. These are the two elections on my guide of December races: https://t.co/Qh4Pc3okIc More when we know the final results!

Election returns are coming in from Texas (yup, it’s Election night). 1/ In Houston’s at-large city council race, progressive newcomer Alejandra Salinas leads the more moderate former councilmember looking for a comeback, 57% to 43%, with all early and mail in.

It never ends! More elections today, and @boltsmag is on top of it for you
Today is Election Day in Texas. The two parties are going head to head to control the mayorship of Pflugerville, Texas, while all Houston voters are eligible to choose a new city councilor. https://t.co/1UzgindY3P

Mikie Sherrill told police unions this year that she opposes giving subpoena power to local civilian police oversight boards. That’s been a big demand of local officials & activists, for years — and more officials were elected on that platform this fall. https://t.co/ahEjrZYqIx

Local officials in Newark, Jersey City, and Trenton want civilian agencies that can investigate police and issue subpoenas. But they keep running into the state’s Democratic leaders.

Don’t miss my latest from this week:
Republicans failed to flip any legislative seats this year, losing ground even in New Jersey, where they had high hopes, and failing to gain several districts that Trump carried last year. Democrats, meanwhile, flipped 25 seats. https://t.co/ciOvuWKsvF

A three-judge panel has rebuffed a request from Democrats to resolve the wisconsin congressional redistricting case in time for 2026 midterms. “We’ll decide them, when we can decide them, said Judge Julie Genovese.”

A pair of lawsuits seeking to redraw congressional boundary lines that currently favor Republicans in Wisconsin are on track to be resolved after the 2026 midterms.

New Jersey doesn't allow civilian boards to subpoena police, or do real investigations. But there's new energy from local officials in Trenton & Jersey City, especially after this fall's elections—but the state government remains skeptical. NEW: https://t.co/ahEjrZYqIx

Democrats, buoyed by Trump’s unpopularity and a fired-up base, flipped 21 percent of all the GOP-held seats that were on the ballot in 2025. We break down what happened, state by state. https://t.co/ciOvuWKsvF

The party secured strong gains reminiscent of 2017, our annual review of state legislative results shows. They won multiple new seats in New Jersey, Virginia, Iowa, and Mississippi.

Trump has promised infinite retribution toward the 21 Republican senators in Indiana who voted against the gerrymander today. Note: 11 of those 21 Republicans are not up for reelection until 2028. So 10 have their terms end next year, though at least 2 are retiring anyway.

A bizarre way to phrase this when *most* Senate Republicans voted against the gerrymander. No way that qualifies as a “small group.”
I am very disappointed that a small group of misguided State Senators have partnered with Democrats to reject this opportunity to protect Hoosiers with fair maps and to reject the leadership of President Trump. Ultimately, decisions like this carry political consequences. I will

That’s a lot of diffuse responsibility among the GOP senators; those who are up in 2026 may face primaries, but hard to pin this on any senator when they sided with the majority of their caucus.

Indiana’s Senate has voted AGAINST the GOP gerrymander that’d have locked in a 9-0 map. This keeps the 7-2 map in place, saving two Democratic seats heading into 2026. The MAJORITY of GOP senators opposed it!
Wow. Indiana's proposed congressional map goes down in flames in the state Senate, 31-19. The state's two Democratic seats will remain.

GOP Senator Spencer Deery confirms he is sticking by the 'no' to the re-gerrymander that he came out with last month.
@SmithCaseyA He says he respects his colleagues in the Senate but the bottom line is he seeks no justification that outweighs the harms.

Republican Senator Greg Goode, one of the key undecided senators (who actually voted to advance the gerrymander past committee on Tuesday) is giving a speech that makes it sound like he's no. Says his constituents kept telling him to oppose it; see thread for more.
@SmithCaseyA He said his constituents oppose the bill for several reasons — said it splits his area into multiple congressional districts and creates confusion.

Unreal. (But real, of course.)
President Trump has made it clear to Indiana leaders: if the Indiana Senate fails to pass the map, all federal funding will be stripped from the state. Roads will not be paved. Guard bases will close. Major projects will stop. These are the stakes and every NO vote will be to

Weird quick of how the Indiana Senate votes: If the gerrymandering roll call is 25-25 today, the YES wins: the LG breaks the tie, gets it to 26-25. But if it's 25-23 for the yes... then it fails! LG cannot vote since there's no tie, & it doesn't get the 26 it needs.
