“This decision reflects a narrow, outdated vision of public safety—one that centers enforcement while neglecting prevention, healing, and community well-being.” LEAP Executive Director @dianemgoldstein on crime prevention and what it really entails. https://t.co/CMcAXZdzz1

We can’t afford to return to the failed logic of “police-only” public safety. The communities most impacted by crime deserve more than that. And so do the officers who serve them.

This (unsurprisingly) tracks with what @docjorich & @che_bullock laid out over 3 years ago in this article for @theappeal, based on direct conversations with the at-risk young men most directly impacted by this rising violence.

Mainstream discussions about gun violence have largely excluded the voices of survivors and perpetrators.
Really important, deeply researched new @BrookingsInst paper showing that the huge 2020-2022 homicide surge began in April 2020, before the Floyd murder and unrest weeks later, suggesting that pandemic stress and closures played a major role, even before onset of "Floyd effect."

How do people think this would have gone, exactly? Kamala goes on Rogan, eats an eighth of shrooms, trips balls live on air, flips millions of votes and wins the election?

Who would have thought that the genius political strategy of "trying to win on the strength of your *opponent's* ideas" would continue to fail so miserably for Democrats?

Despite having absolutely nothing to show for this strategy except a string of humiliating defeats, Dem strategists are now predictably calling for the party to run on a platform even more indecipherable from the GOP's. Lessons must not be learned.

Another great @jerryiannelli column rightly thrashing Dems for their dead-end approach on public safety. Rather than trying to beat Republicans by offering a competing vision of a better way forward, they tacked rightward and still got their asses kicked.

Democrats spent the last four years running away from police reform and instead chanted "fund the police." They lost.

Still, I've seen a lot of dishonest accounting here when it comes to measuring and contrasting the potential harms of the two outcomes.

I know that's not a compelling endorsement—and I'm not trying to make one! People should vote their conscience, and obviously, the moral equation is far less straightforward than the practical one.

To extend the "voting as harm reduction" metaphor in the drug space, if one option is the equivalent of pumping the drug supply full of carfentanyl and banning all test strips, isn't the alternative almost by definition "harm reduction"?

From a practical standpoint, this election will result in one of two outcomes. It's fine to argue that neither will reduce harm *enough* (even that both would increase harm). But I've yet to see a compelling argument that both outcomes would produce an equal chance of equal harm.
The thing about "voting as harm reduction" is that many of us don't see restabilizing American liberalism—in all of its exceptionalist, revisionist, and imperialist violence, while facing a historic challenge to its legitimacy—to be harm reduction.

Today is the first day of NewsMatch, an @INN program that helps nonprofit newsrooms like The Appeal increase capacity. From now until the end of the year, all donations are doubled. There’s no better time to support our journalism! https://t.co/xuKhRcNvMx

Aren't these inflated Polymarket numbers just an obvious ploy by Elon/Thiel to hedge their Trump bets by finessing MAGA true believers into buying super high on Trump, ensuring a massive payday if Kamala wins? I can't be the only one saying this, right?

Some personal news: Tomorrow is my first day at LEAP (@PoliceForReform) where I'll be strategic comms director. Lots of feelings about leaving full-time work in journalism again, but I'm an @theappeal stan for life and they're not getting rid of me that easily! More there soon.
