Politically neutral campaign for regulation of electoral advertising. Labour, Lib Dem, Green and 3 other London mayor candidates have signed our ad code.
At our recent parliamentary event on the topic of "honesty in politics" with
@CompInPolitics

urged
@UKLabour

@LibDems

@TheGreenParty
in supporting regulation to prevent lies in electoral advertising.
You can listen to what he had to say below.
.
@marinapurkiss
has today joined calls for the main parties to sign a code of conduct to prevent lies in electoral ads ahead of the general election.
“So far only
@TheGreenParty
have proposed signing up … but
@LibDems
and
@UKLabour
, what the hell are you waiting for?"
.This is great leadership from
@carla_denyer
and
@thegreenparty
.
“I say to the leaders of the other parties what if we all signed up to a code of conduct where we pledged factual accuracy in electoral advertising in the next general election.
I’m prepared to sign one, are you?”
🧵WHY THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY IS USING GREEN: AN EXPLANATION FROM SOME ADVERTISING PEOPLE.
A little while ago, there was a successful chain of garages called the Blue Group. They were the biggest chain in the country and had been for some thirteen years.
Here are some examples of lies in political ads that Alex discussed with
@mrjamesob
yesterday on
@LBC
. There are almost no rules to stop political advertisers saying whatever they want in their ads unlike all other ads. Our campaign wants to change that. Thread 👇
🧵We are delighted that Lord Puttnam
@dputtnam
agreed to chair a board and review process for the misleading ads we've been tracking in this election period.
The project goes some way to dismantling the argument that it is too complex to regulate lies in electoral ads.
We are braced in 2024 for what we believe will be the worst election for disinformation we’ve seen so far.
We’ll be upping our efforts to prevent misleading ads (and potentially AI) distorting democracy too.
More on that next month.
🧵Below are some of the 2023 "highlights".
Lord Puttnam
@DPuttnam
:
“Unless electoral advertising is regulated, we are badly risking the future of plural democracy.
It seems to be a simple choice.
You either regulate for truth or you allow lies to proliferate.
And with that goes any hope of a sustainable democracy.”
We are delighted in the leadership being shown by
@SadiqKhan
in signing up to our ad code that commits to making "every reasonable effort not to mislead voters”.
We've now 5 London mayor candidates signed up including Green & Lib Dem candidates
@ZoeGarbett
and
@robblackie
.
The lack of regulation for electoral ads means that greenwashing is banned for business but permitted for politicians.

Awful.
And in any other context, unlawful.
We are writing again about the
@Conservatives

@TheGreenParty

The

🧵 Was the election in Uxbridge and Ruislip swung by misleading ads?
With our team's experience analysing numerous advertising campaigns it seems very possible to us that these "newspapers" could have affected 500 votes in 30,000 (the margin of victory over

Well our interview with
@mrjamesob
yesterday on
@LBC
took an unexpected turn yesterday.
We look forward to speaking to Sadiq Khan tomorrow and asking him to support the pledge we've launched for factual accuracy in electoral ads ahead of the London mayoral and general election.
Thanks to
@mrjamesob
for inviting me back on his show to ask Sadiq Khan to sign up to a code for factual accuracy in his election ads.
We haven't heard back yet but look forward to speaking to his election agent this week as promised.

Ah yes, green, because that was a much smaller competitor that could be ignored if they complained and anyway green said good things about cars.
We could call it greenwashing? You know, run the car through the greenwash?
At least people won't think it's blue any more.
The House of Lords’ report ‘Digital Technology and the Resurrection of Trust’ that has been published today is a profoundly important document. The recommendations cover all the points we have been campaigning for over several years.
🧵They con because they can.
Over the past weeks, several examples of
@Conservatives
party publicity material have been brought to our attention by supporters and friends because they don’t identify the party, just the candidate (often unknown) and the promoter (always unknown).
In the absence of electoral ad regulation we've just launched an ad code for factual accuracy ahead of the general election.👇
We are delighted that
@TheGreenParty
are the first party to sign up to it as
@carla_denyer
said she would last year. 👏👏

“I say to the leaders of the other parties what if we all signed up to a code of conduct where we pledged factual accuracy in electoral advertising in the next general election.
I’m prepared to sign one, are you?”
The issue of political ad content rules not being fit for purpose has really come of age in this election. We are speaking to radio stations across the country this pm raising further aweness of the issue. This election has certainly brought the urgency of the situation to life.
We now have 2 of the main 4 London Mayor candidates signed up to the code for electoral ad factual accuracy and a commitment from
@SadiqKhan
made on
@mrjamesob
's
@LBC
programme that he will get his election agent to speak to us.
We look forward to speaking to them.
@ZoeGarbett
.
@robblackie
the Liberal Democrat candidate for Mayor of London, has signed up to our electoral ad code for factual accuracy.
We welcome his leadership on the issue of misleading electoral advertising.
You can read more about the code here.👇
Today we are launching our pledge for the May 2022 elections and we are delighted that
@TheGreenParty
and Co-Leader
@carla_denyer
are the first to sign up.
We encourage the other parties and candidates standing to sign up too. 👇
🧵On election results day we need to point out how voters have been misled by lies in electoral advertising.
So we've just published our review of the campaigns running for the May 5th elections which you can download here.
... and we've had another leaflet through for Tory MP
@NorwichChloe

It looks like the
@Conservatives
have deliberately adopted this design.

@Keir_Starmer
says on

today if
@UKLabour
were in power “you’d have a government based on honest and integrity” adhering to the Nolan principles.
Introducing regulation to prevent lies in electoral ads, as recommended by the HoL, couldn’t be more aligned to that vision.
A polite nudge: two weeks ago we asked
@SadiqKhan
on the
@mrjamesob
show whether he would agree to a simple code for electoral ad factual accuracy.
He said his election agent would get in touch.
That hasn’t happened.
Should we be surprised?
We are certainly disappointed.

Electoral ads have no regulation and you can’t complain to anyone. 🙃

An argument sometimes put forward against regulating political ads is that the turnaround time for complaints from a regulator would need to be quick in an election period. This 24 hours turnaround goes some way to dismantling that argument.

🧵Careful what you Wash for.
On 14th March, the good people of Wash Common in Newbury elected Graham Storey of
@TheGreenParty
, by a considerable margin, in a by-election brought about by the resignation of a Lib Dem Councillor.
🧵They con because they can.
Over the past weeks, several examples of
@Conservatives
party publicity material have been brought to our attention by supporters and friends because they don’t identify the party, just the candidate (often unknown) and the promoter (always unknown).
🧵What’s yellow and tells lies?
Many
@LibDems
bar charts, sad to say, but every now and then one comes along that astounds even cynical old campaigners like ourselves.
Congratulations, Councillor Sangar of Sheffield, for a particularly notable example.
The new leader, elected by all the shareholders of the Blue Group, turned out to be completely useless and lasted just 47 chaotic days. Can you believe it? More and more people said they'd had it with the Blue Group.
It couldn’t be yellow, because the new leader, who was a mathematician, hadn’t been able to work out how the Yellow group did their bar charts.
What colour was left?
🧵Misleading political ads that aren’t deemed electoral are in the scope of the ASA.
So we've decided to complain about this one.
The fact we can highlights the gaping hole in regulation for electoral ads which you can't complain to anyone about!
Read our complaint below.👇
Well done
@BurgerKing
for pointing out with humour the bonkers situation that we have no rules for political ads (unlike the many that exist for all other ads). We are campaigning to change that. Follow us as we document all the whoppers we come across over the last week ... 🗳
This ad for a BURGER has to be ‘legal, honest, decent and truthful’. But the bus and political ads it parodies doesn’t. That’s ridiculous.
@clearpolitic5
Along came another new leader who realised that people had had it with the Blue Group.
He thought I know we’ll go back to the old days when the garages were independently owned, by people from the local community who were trusted and their name was on the garage.
Things started to go wrong, however, when their leader was caught drink driving and denied it, despite the photos of him slumped over the wheel, clutching a bottle.
It is good that there are rules to prevent misleading ads for Botox.
However, there are none for the most important ads of all …
Those that influence votes in an election.
🙃
People thought well, we’re hardly going to trust the Blue Group if the leader tells porkies and quite a few said they were never going to buy another Blue Group car.
Well the work we and our supporters did uncovering the scale of the Conservative tactic of using
@TheGreenParty
brand guidelines on their leaflets seems to have gone viral overnight on a few threads.
We’d appreciate a link back to our campaign / credit if you use the images.

It didn’t matter that they were part of any group in fact it was important that they weren’t. And so it came to pass.
But the new leader realised that they would still have to do some advertising if they were going to sell any cars.
What colour should their advertising be because for sure it couldn’t be blue? That was what caused all the trouble in the first place.
It couldn’t be red, because that was their main competition, the Red group, and people might get confused and vote for them instead.
Many are crediting the Ulez expansion as the issue that lost
@UKLabour
Uxbridge & South Ruislip by 495 votes.
How much of a role did the fake Tory newspaper the “Stop Ulez Times” play in that knife-edge result?
We have a background in advertising and can tell you it works btw.

2. an official communication from ‘City Hall’ announcing an increase in Council Tax. If similar rules for non political advertising applied it would transgress misleadingness/ identification/ imitation/ denigration rules under CAP Code Section 3 Misleading advertising.
🧵We’ve just published our fourth electoral ad review and if the type seems a little heavier and the tone a little angrier, it’s because the keyboard is being hit a little harder and the writers are indeed a little madder.
"… and if they really care about politics why wouldn’t they?”
You can ask your MP to urge their party to sign up to a pledge on our site. We need to end the disinformation arms race.
There are almost no rules for political ads. If you’d like to there is no one you can complain to and no entity that can withdraw this

1. It’s only in electoral campaigning that messages such as these are ‘permitted.’
In any other context, lawyers would indeed be drafting invoices, or the ASA would be telling the advertiser to chuck their ad in the bin.

Ever since the appearance of the ‘factual claim’ below in 2016, it has become increasingly obvious that political organsiations cannot be trusted not to distort, manipulate, conceal or ignore data, evidence of which assertion we published in 2019 and 2021.
