🚨📰 Some personal news.. I'm thrilled to be joining the fantastic team at
@CityAM
as political reporter, based in Westminster and City Hall, from next month.
DMs very much open for tips/stories/coffees!
To the councillor who called me a “freelancer” and a “crass waste of licence fee payers’ money”, I think people living in Norfolk see the value of stories about planning applications, local businesses, rural deprivation, Ofsted results, the spending of public money...
Tons of police at the Belgrave Square occupation of Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska's London property.
Officers shooing away anyone without an accredited press card..
Protestors are still shouting at police from the edge of the balconies, asking why the British state is protecting this property.
"How us it legal? F***ing disgusting fascists. Everyone f***ing hates you."
The squatters are using a version of the Section 6 notice known as the "protest defense", in which they do not intend to live and sleep at the property, but are instead occupying it as a protest, on rotation. This is because of the 2012 law change on residential property.
Just spoke to a protestor on the balcony - one of five - who says riot police are inside the building asking them to leave.
Tells me the group have no leader - “we are anarchists” - and he is from Eastern Europe living in London while other members are from other countries.
Protestors are asking the crowd to order them a pizza as police descend in the cherry picker to cheers.
Shouts of “pizza or death” and “tout le monde deteste la police”
So many police here lining the cordon and keeping journalists and the public back from the building. Can count at least 30 from where I'm stood, excluding riot cops now inside the house..
Should add, the vast majority of councillors have been nothing but polite, professional and welcoming, even when I’m writing stories they may find critical.
Also, nothing wrong with being a freelancer (although they clearly didn’t think so).

The activists are now telling police they will only come down if they are not arrested and can walk away.
“If the cops want to accept our proposal we will come down right away.. no reason to be arrested for burglary. We are here to protest.”
Astonishing, infuriating viewing - and incredible composure from
@maitlis
- but I think this was the most telling bit for me.
What an insight into the level of self-interest and lack of consequences this man has had to face in his life.
#PrinceAndew
It’s starting to rain here but that doesn’t seem to be affecting the protestors’ moods - they are singing and asking police if they care about their “health and safety”

Starmer opens with tributes to Alistair Darling, Glenys Kinnock and Hillsborough families - before launching into jibe over Rwanda.
“Other than members of his own cabinet, how many people has the PM sent there?”
All our tweets and videos from 5 Belgrave Square, where activists have occupied a building linked to sanctioned oligarch Oleg Deripaska. They say they want to give it to Ukrainian refugees. Riot police have now stormed the building to try and remove them.
A Norfolk contractor affected by the loan charge scandal is urging the chancellor to “see sense” and back plans for a settlement to the issue, which he says is “still costing lives”.

Our reporter
@JessicaFKeyes
is at oligarch Oleg Deripaska's £5m Belgravia mansion, which has been occupied by protestors. Around 20 riot police have cut a hole in the door and stormed in. They are now - slightly bizarrely - standing inside the window asking the activists to leave

@ReclaimTS
who says she feels "absolutely vindicated and overjoyed" at the judgement - my story here for

Signing off from
@LondonWorldCom
for the night - will be back with updates on
@resist_london
tomorrow. Protestors are still on the ledge and some police and media have now left the area.
Occupation still going strong on the balcony of the building despite many many attempts to get close to them with a "cherry picker". More people welcome to come down to support despite the closing of the road. Be prepared with warm clothes and hot drinks etc if possible.
Feels a bit weird to have good news to share at the moment but very excited to be joining the

Oh, and if you've got a council story in

Darkness has fallen and the protestors are still on the balcony ledge -
@metpoliceuk
will have “contingencies” and a continued police presence here. Could be a long night.

UPDATE: Several arrests have been made - after it sounds like a scuffle broke out to the right of the police cordon on Belgravia Square - but told officers have “got” the individuals involved..
Shadow home secretary
@YvetteCooperMP
gives the speeding question another bash..
Braverman again insists “at no time did I seek to avoid the sanction”.
Which, as has been repeatedly said, not the question being asked.

polling event she is “fangirling” to be hearing from Sir John Curtice and is a “totally independent woman” and an undecided voter.

Notably the officers have NOT been named - yet - as would usually happen in the case of criminal charges.
The Crown Prosecution Service say this is due to "operational reasons".
just spoke on zoom to a bunch of sixth formers about getting into journalism and honestly, nothing but admiration for the girl who yawned throughout and then said she wanted to be an air hostess

Speaking at Lord Mayor’s banquet tonight Sunak quoted Yeats: “The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere, the ceremony of innocence is drowned…”
Poets on here will know this is The Second Coming, which also includes the line: “Things fall apart, the centre cannot hold.” 👀
So excited to be shortlisted for apprentice of the year - thanks to everyone at

Confident outing from Starmer this week at
