We’re hosted by the @LondonU today. Fun wiki fact: It was the first UK university to introduce exams for women in 1869 and, a decade later, the first to admit women to degrees. And hired the first female vice chancellor! 🎓👩🏼‍🎓👩🏽‍🎓👩🏿‍🎓

@LondonU Mayor Sadiq Khan is now making his keynote speech. On the question #DoesLondonWork , he references Dickens, calling the capital "a tale of two cities". SK: "London is international and entrepreneurial. By so many measures London does work." Says it powers the UK economy.

@LondonU "Our public transport system run by @TfL is rightly envied the world over". But says it's because he loves London so much that he can't "downplay the challenges". SK: "The 'London promise' [idea you can work hard and achieve anything] is under serious threat." #DoesLondonWork

@LondonU @TfL SK: "London has some of the most deprived communities in the country." Says the central mission of his mayoralty is to create a city that works for everyone. Calls for greater devolution for London & "our other great towns and cities". #DoesLondonWork

@scullyp Paul Scully tells the London Conference his job is to ensure the city gets its voice heard in government. Potentially tricky going forwards as there are now no ministers who represent a London constituency who attend Rishi Sunak's cabinet?

@scullyp Paul Scully thanks everyone at the conference who has helped to welcome refugees fleeing war or persecution, including from Hong Kong and Ukraine. Interesting in light of home secretary's comments on "migrant invasion" in the HoC last night. #DoesLondonWork

@scullyp Scully echoes mayor Khan's comments on London being a "tale of two cities" as he references Disraeli's "two nations". PS: "Tackling these issues head on is a key focus for this govt." Says £65m has been invested in levelling up projects across the capital. #DoesLondonWork

@scullyp PS: "Pulling investment, jobs and local growth away from London could not be further from the truth of what we're trying to achieve." Mentions Battersea Power Station redevelopment (I've been, it's lovely). "Much of that £9bn has come from overseas but its a London project."

Laughter as Scully asked whether the current Brexit deal is working for London. He says: “In my view where the opportunities lay within Brexit.. I look at the fact that in the 19th c the UK grew as a world economy.. the 21st c belongs to Asia. It’s remaining a global centre.”

My piece for @LondonWorldCom - Sadiq Khan said he is “heartbroken and angered” by home secretary Suella Braverman’s comments about a migrant “invasion” following the firebombing of a Kent detention centre.
