When a studio or dev accidentally lets slip info in an interview, court document, or whatever, report away. That’s a leak.
This was a malicious hack and ransom. Reporting on the specifics enhances future ransom value and encourages more malicious data breaches.
I’m exhausted by this industry’s posturing for devs and zero peer accountability around leaks. You’ll see it all over your feeds today, but don’t forget they’ll profit from leaks. There’s a difference in reporting the event and detailing the contents of the leak. Do better.

Outside of the occasional EP or Creative Director doing a lot of press for a game you don't here people say the names of individual devs, so to have it broadcast like that was a total shock.

This is your target quality bar, your best pieces need to meet or exceed what you see there.
Be incredibly honest with yourself in this process. If you are just starting you won’t have anything that competes, that’s ok.

If it’s art and the composition/lighting are better work on that. If it’s better posed, or proportioned work on your anatomy.

Those portfolios were good enough to land an interview & a job. So they provide a nice objective guideline.

Step 6 - Find the weakest piece in those portfolio. This is your floor.
Nothing you ever include should be comparatively weaker to this piece.
That might mean you need to go back to a lot of work you thought was done and improve it. Or you need to make a bunch more. That’s ok.

If you can get there without expensive schooling do it. If you need the school environment do that, just keep the focus on the work.

The quality bar improves every year so you need to periodically repeat this process.
And quality is only the first step. The speed at which you can generate that quality will become important as you start working, but the portfolio is the thing that will give you a chance.

Eventually you’ll have roughly the same number of examples of work that fit between those min/max quality pieces as the portfolios you identified as the top of the bunch.
You are now baseline competitive in the job market. This might happen year 1 of college or many years after.

“Won’t hire” is a bit much.
But that said, I think it’s good advice for artists to have some work in progress (sketch->blocking->final) in portfolios in the future. As coherent stages of progress are certainly harder to fake with AI.
An Art Director I spoke to 3 weeks ago said he wouldn't hire a Concept Artist with a portfolio posted online after 2020.
Paraphrased: "How can you judge someone's creativity, problem-solving, or critical thinking when you can fake it?"
Anyone else feel conflicted?

I saw a speed runner on Twitch beat it in four moves, absolutely no depth. It looked like it had potential, but was ruined by woke devs that had to make the queen all powerful while the king is weak and needs to be protected.

As a hiring manager at most I’m going to see a school name on a resume. I’ll have no idea about your grades. But I’ll see projects you’ve made, and spot the standard class projects you were forced to make vs the thing you came up with yourself.
