I used to write fun things for Bloomberg Businessweek. Now I'm writing a book! I rarely tweet anymore. RTs are not endorsements.

Within the last year I had a baby, my mom died, and I decided to write a book. I don’t know if this will involve less crying than the first two things but here’s hoping.

Really, are free school lunches, a child tax credit, and family and medical leave "left-wing"? Or are they common sense measures that government can and should do to benefit the public and that the public favors? I think you know the answer.

The reason I’m saying anything here is because of the complete lack of guidance from anyone at @Delta regarding what to do about it.

To all the people who think women shouldn’t be in the Secret Service, former special agents —including Clint Hill, who was part of President Kennedy’s Dallas motorcade — have some choice words for you.

A must-read for anyone who employs moms - by @clairesuddath for @BW

Last year, when companies rolled out their RTO mandates, I noticed something: all the moms I knew struggled with them. REALLY struggled. They were anxious. Stressed. Some quit their jobs over it. Others couldn’t afford but they they fantasized about it.

While the RTO debate is often framed as company-versus-employee, it's just as much a tale of inequality. 📧 @clairesuddath writes the Bloomberg Equality newsletter every Thursday afternoon. Sign up for free to get yours delivered to your inbox: https://t.co/O8tqylbiq6

But when asked to choose between the two,  to become less available to their children just for the sake of something as nebulous and hard to define as “office culture,” they decided they were done.

I spoke to nearly two dozen women who worked at companies as big as Google and as small as a mom-and-pop business. Some were single mothers. Some were married with a high earning spouse. They were all proud of their careers. And they loved their children.

According to McKinsey, women rank remote/flexible work as the 2nd most important workplace benefit (#1 is health insurance). Economists say remote work has allowed so many mothers of young kids to join the labor force in recent years. But companies rarely acknowledge this.

Very few articles talked about this. In fact, people were celebrating the post-pandemic maternal employment boom instead. I wondered, why had parents—more specifically, mothers—been left out of the RTO conversation? What does that mean for women? The result is this story.

I’ve written about maternal mortality and even I find it confusing sometimes. This is really helpful.

For the first time, the US government is trying to put a dollar figure on unpaid household work, nearly 80% of which is done by women. Turns out we’re contributing more than $3 trillion in unpaid labor each year.

Hello, I’m Claire Suddath, a senior writer on the Equality team, here to talk about how the US government might finally start counting women’s unpaid household duties as actual work. But first...
