Arnold had an abusive alcoholic father. He was born in an Austrian village with ~2000 people and had little money. He started lifting weights, got so good at it, which took him to the US. Decided he wanted to do movies. Became huge star despite accent. Decided to do politics….

for future ref, the recommended reading list at the back of the manual of The Sims
Video games are terrible nowadays because developers don't include an entire page of recommended reading at the back of the manual to further elucidate their whimsical satire of post-war American suburban consumerism.

@solarsystern i think maybe in his narrative he might be mad at the sherpa for revealing his vulnerability, like he doesn't want to admit that he needed help.

one thing i've noticed in the past 20+ years of being very online is that a lot of people who end up being really popular, get their early start from doing a gimmick, and then dropping it once they reach a critical mass. and people then often forget the gimmick within ~3-5 years.

collecting notes on what seems to be an emerging story of animals being onboarded onto our superstimuli.
Parrots are clearly intelligent enough to understand video UIs. They also apparently prefer watching videos of other parrots 🤔. This implies an opportunity for a "parrot streaming" platform. Looking for a team who is as excited about this opportunity as Iam

kids feel the blues too. big source around this age is that people no longer find you cute. now they scold you for making mistakes. mama’s too busy with the new baby. nobody claps and whoops and cheers for your accomplishments like they used to. you’re on your own now kid….

a while ago people were asking how come it took humanity so long to develop agriculture etc. i suspect the answer is basically this. innovations are deviations which threaten the prevailing social order and so they tend to get put down.
Have you guys heard the story about the Roman guy who invented plastic, and the emperor got freaked out and had him executed?

…became the governor of California. And since then he’s grown into an elder-statesman like figure with gravitas and real king energy. He’s not a perfect guy, but if you look at where he started and how he turned out he has lived an incredible life which has meant a lot to many.
“Arnold. You’re a very impressive bodybuilder. But what’s this talk about movies? Your accent is terrible! Nobody will understand- oh, ok. You’re a film star. Well done. Wait, you want to be WHAT?”

when I was a kid so many adults used to tell me “when you have a child of your own then you will understand (why adults bully and manipulate and condescend to children)” and like yeah now I understand… that all those adults were wrong and messed up lol.
I honestly think the world would be a better place if parents didn’t think of life as a gift bestowed, but rather a curse inflicted. You bring someone into this godforsaken world, you’d better make it worth their while.

i'm happily married 10+ years with a wife and son who love me and i have none of that shit together lol. this is the "shiny lure" class of advice i was talking about. ime the only thing you actually need in a relationship is to know/learn how to relate to each other healthily.
my hot take is i don’t think anybody should be dating until their shit is together. eating healthy, working out regularly, having a morning routine, a spiritual practice, a therapist, financial discipline. things like that have to come first.

especially consider him in relation to some of the more boy-kings we have around. If my son someday puts up an Arnold poster on his bedroom wall, I would be quite pleased about that, considering all of the other options out there
there has to be something more subversive and radical that a wealthy adult man can do than behave like an edgy 13 year old.

imo: if you’re deliberate about “doing the reading”, whatever that means for any domain, within a year it’s possible to be in the top ~5% in the scene. This is because 95% of people don’t do the reading.
I became a filmbro faster than expected. It literally just takes a year. Watch 4-8 movies a week for a year and you will eventually dig deep enough to discover something odd that really hits the spot. Now ur a filmbro with alternative taste & esoteric recommendations.

one thing about people is that they love to contribute towards solving finite, observable problems with clear solutions. they’ll happily do it even at a moderate personal cost, because it feels so good to have made a tangible difference to something.

ngl it would be funny if pfizer's first hit was making a boner pill by trying to treat high blood pressure, and if their second hit was making a big booba injection by trying to make a covid vaccine.

i'm so curious to understand the economics behind this business. have they actually built the thing? how much did it cost to make? what do they do if nobody buys it? how did they finance it? do they sell smaller subs? let's investigate.
The Austrian-based company Migaloo is offering a 541-foot-long "private submersible superyacht” for a base price of $2 billion. The M5 has a range of 9,300 miles and can take its passengers to a depth of 820 feet. The luxury submarine includes a helipad, two swimming pools, a

a dairy cow eats ~100lbs of food and shits ~60lbs of hot stinky manure daily, you never see that in the pictures.
So you're telling me you don't wanna get married, have 6 kids, move to the country, buy a homestead, get baby cows, grow our own food, drink raw milk all day and live happily ever after?

i figured this out by age ~6 and it made me miserable, occasionally even suicidal, until i was about 22- but after that it's basically been paradise. (there's an interesting parallel between how people flinch from the full truth of the lowest lows and the highest highs).
I think the earlier a kid figures out that the world doesn’t necessarily make sense, follow rules, or have one system of logic the better off they are.

when I was in the military I was responsible for a file, meant to track loans of certain items. one month my superior yelled at me for not bringing him the file. “but nobody loaned anything,” I said. “I don’t care!” he shouted. “your job is to bring me the file!”.

my wife is a smart sensible woman and it seemed sensible to both of us that it would be a good idea for her to socialize with other moms online and it seems like every day she is just being bombarded with horror stories.
A lot of academic study has been devoted to online right-wing spaces cultivating violence but we need more attention to mom groups cultivating schizophrenia.

for starters I don’t think you’re selfish for not having children. and kids actually are a joy to have . but if you need a different reason, I really liked what some other couple once said, about wanting to have “a maximum human experience”. I’ll elaborate how I interpreted that.
Let’s flip the script today. Why did you have children? And don’t give me the “they’re a joy to have” thing. Be fr. People tell me I’m selfish for not having children. So by all means, tell me why you *did* have children.
