I think there’s too much focus on “increasing the birth rate” and not enough on deterring unfit parents.
Watching the way my 8 yr old daughter tortures my toddler son (hovering, pestering, ‘trying to help’ him) all while he shouts for her to leave him alone makes me realize women have a deeply engrained need to drive men completely insane and it starts from birth.

They don’t care about making legal problems for fanfics. Companies just want to plunder fan-spaces in a purely extractive, profit-making way. They don’t care about fandom, art, or ethics.
I really don't care if fanfic is redone so it can be trad published. But the publishers themselves are screwing up big time making the source materials such a big part of marketing now--it's likely gonna cause legal problems for fanfic in general and I'm shocked they don't see it.

So many things about this bug me. Romantasy is a heteronormative genre. You do not need to be drawing on fanfics for books. The publishing industry already prioritises these stories. Also, the fact that these books are being promoted as Harry Potter fanfics is so morally dubious.
What is it with this random influx of dr*mione fics being published as books?? Like what is the cause of this.

It’s not really necessary for writers to world-build beyond the requirements of plot. Like for example, we don’t know what the world outside Panem looks like in the Hunger Games. But Rowling’s hubris is such that she voluntarily shared her ludicrous world-building with the world.

You can see this happening with rescued dogs too. You can rescue a dog from absolutely unimaginable conditions but after you’ve loved them for a while they get used to the good life and become spoiled little babies in the best possible way.
Funny thing about neuroplasticity is that yeah, trauma changes your physical brain, but so does being loved and living well.

Even better, let’s bring back the Victorian penny hang, where shift workers paid a penny to sleep leaning upright on ropes at lodging houses.
Cities should be allowed to build housing for adults like this. We do it for hostels, and it can serve as "housing of last resort." Very cheap rent, by the bed. There'd have to be strictly enforced rules if paired with strangers, but it's not impossible.

Great. With so much of the publishing industry already relying on TikTok for marketing, this is going to make it even harder for writers based outside the US to promote their books.
TikTok will launch a new app specifically for U.S. users called ‘M2’ on September 5th ahead of a potential sale. The current version will shut down by March 2026 & users will need to download the new version to keep accessing TikTok.

Disappointing from the bookseller. There’s no ethical way to use tech that’s founded on stolen work.
We need to stop treating AI as good or bad and start asking better questions. Who benefits? Who is excluded? What does ethical use look like in practice, not just in theory, asks @_Siobhan_Cole in our recent Comment piece 👇.

What must it be like to live life without knowing the joy of losing yourself in a book? The beauty of a well-turned sentence, the wonder of the human imagination, the sheer delight of words well-chosen. I’d rather read one book properly than “read” like this.
