Interested in how cells maintain balance and resilience during periods of stress. Postdoc @Genentech. Alumnus @UCSF - @BerkeleyMCB. 🏳️🌈
Joined July 2018
My first preprint! The huge protein complex eIF2B senses cell stress via its conformation. How is conformational change coordinated across its 10 subunits? We discover that a central helix acts as a fulcrum to allosterically control ISR stress sensing.

The Integrated Stress Response (ISR) enables cells to survive a variety of acute stresses, but chronic activation of the ISR underlies age-related diseases. ISR signaling down-regulates translation...

An exciting next chapter in the ISRIB story from Walter lab colleagues, w/ a unified look at the mechanism of this cognition-enhancing small molecule. More @biorxivpreprint

The integrated stress response (ISR) is activated by phosphorylation of the translation initiation factor eIF2 in response to various stress conditions. Phosphorylated eIF2 (eIF2-P) inhibits eIF2’s...
Ending 2020 with another preprint! We discovered a conformational switch that couples the eIF2, eIF2-P, and ISRIB binding sites in eIF2B. Lead by Michael Schoof and with great teamwork from fellow Walter lab members Lan Wang and @ScienceyRosalie.

"Stacey had the vision." Democrat Stacey Abrams raised millions of dollars to organize and register hundreds of thousands of voters in Georgia, long a GOP stronghold. With her work, President-elect Biden is now on track to carry the state.

ATLANTA (AP) — Stacey Abrams spent years working to convince political power players that Georgia is a genuine two-party battleground, a Deep South state where the left could compete if it organized...

New work out today on the design of new protein inhibitors of #SARSCoV2 led by @tlinsky00 and Daniel-Adriano Silva’s talented team @neoleukin. Happy to provide structural context to these designs! #COVID19 #CryoEM #BlackandSTEM ✊🏾
Researchers using a computational approach designed a protein “decoy” that could neutralize #SARSCoV2 infection in cells and protect hamsters from a SARS-CoV-2 challenge. https://t.co/PC92AREynp

⚠️BREAKING—Huge CDC study says #COVID19 not only caused 285,000 excess deaths— but CDC also found, surprisingly, that it has struck 25-44-year-olds very hard: Their “excess death” rate is up 26.5% over previous years, the largest change for any age group!

About two-thirds are from covid-19, with the rest from other causes, according to a CDC report.
