What a shameful moment for
#cdnmedia
as we all watch a digital assassination in slow motion. A journalist gets taken apart, piece by piece and not a word from the big names,the male colleagues,those we look up to & those who can afford to risk a lot more than us to show support.
How are we not covering this enough? This is what a battle for freedom looks like, this is what totalitarianism actually looks like. Keep bearing witness even if it's unbearable.
#IranRevoIution
Every few days with the anger,violence and threats to silence getting worse. This is not just me.There’s a clear,sustained and extremely organized ongoing hate campaign against Canadian journalists since last year.Most of whom are racialised, women and those who are vulnerable.
Diaspora, it’s irresponsible to unleash “hot takes” without research on the context and history of your home country. Don’t impose your half-narratives over the lived experience of others. Repeating populist rhetoric without understanding backstory is a privilege. Check it.
I would offer a trigger warning but I think Canada deserves to be a little uncomfortable right now. As
@CFWIJ
reported, Canada has rated highest for online abuse of women journalists in Sept. I got this for doing an episode on Annamie Paul yesterday.We’re on nicknames now.
@caj
I struggled with posting this.Not right now,I thought,as we bear witness to one of the biggest acts of violence of our lifetime.Then I thought of younger,more vulnerable journalists across Canadian newsrooms.Betrayed,silenced, getting worse than this & alone.This is for them. -1
Last night
@wickdchiq
@atRachelGilmore
and I did a podcast episode on hate against women and racialized journalists in this country. Then I waited because I knew violence was was coming. And it landed in my inbox this morning, along with some others. Here is how Canada can hate:
When your life’s work is to stalk women young enough to be your daughter obsessively & not let them have even one win. Also when you’re so ignorant/privileged that you have zero idea what anti-press freedom campaigns look like and your tweet proves exactly why we won the award.
That video is only Sami Abraham & Imran R. Khan showing us who they are. It’s shameful to our industry to call them journalists.They wouldn’t be employed elsewhere in the world. Solidarity with the only journalist in the video; the only one I call a colleague

A Canadian story: the Indian guy who works at my local shawarma place just gave me a free drink with a smile and a “10 wickets!You guys beat us!”

Two weeks ago a journalist won an award & elevated her organization amidst relentless hate. I made a speech asking an entire industry to protect crucial voices, to do better. Two weeks later award-winning journalist gets laid off. Really setting the standard here

Two weeks ago,

@sabaeitizaz
and
@wickdchiq
with the Tara Singh Hayer Memorial Award.
It recognizes a journalist who made an important contribution to press freedom -- and who has taken personal risks or suffered physical reprisals for their work.
Organising a blockade of the country’s capital. Open death threats including to the PM.Threatening to bring down the government. Being funded by international anonymous sources. Now imagine a Muslim doing all that, see the whole trope reversing in your head and expose yourself.
The 174 who voted to remove IK are elected members of Pakistan’s parliament. By acting like their vote is somehow illicit, you are insulting the millions of Pakistanis who placed them there to represent them.Check your privilege,your double standards & learn about your country.
Don’t look away. Read what has been normalized — by many I thought were allies— for those that look like me. This is how violence is visited upon Black and brown hearts, minds and souls.
Me: Spends 1 hr on hold to file police report before having to go back to actual job of hosting podcast.On hold another hr after work,hangs up,tries to locate officer assigned to PREVIOUS death threat, he’s gone home.
OPINIONS after death threat:
Have you tried the police?

What do you call an organization that bombs press offices? Since you’re so keen on “balance” and both sides of the story, here’s a Palestinian reporter doing her job and bringing it to you, while getting bombed.
I see journalists like Youmna reporting from Gaza and she makes all our journalism feel so insignificant. Thank you for being the voice of millions and for speaking an unpopular truth Youmna. More power

First of all, get a map asshole, I’m not Palestinian. Secondly, here is a re-plug of the episode on how impunity culture & violence has seeped into real life all the way to the Deputy PM Freeland, and why the police response doesn’t match the threat :
And where is the trauma-informed approach that first responders in law enforcement are meant to practise when talking to victims? I remember I got nervous as I got no response, started speeding up my words, rushing the facts because I felt I wasn’t being listened to with empathy.
Hey you with the anonymous accounts? You don’t know me & my quiet strength. You have never faced down men with guns in dark rooms where you are the only woman. You’ve never been caught between military & militants, navigating the truth while being told you were a target by both

Not just Canadian news sites blocked. Meta has blocked ALL global news from Canadians. Essentially these are digital sanctions & a complete information blackout imposed on a sovereign country.A show of force to an elected govt. Access to information is a fundamental human right.
Canada’s newspocalypse has officially begun with Meta blocking news links and Facebook pages of Canadian news publishers in response to Bill C-18.
“Democracy dies in darkness,” etc. etc.
This has triggered memories of the time I tried to report an acid attack threat back home.The cop laughed in my face,said “the poor boy must have a crush on you…what did you do to him” as a joke. It was clear to us what systems of patriarchal oppression we were fighting there…
Sometimes there are zero consequences. Depends on who you are where you are and which end of the system you were born at.
Here’s the anti-maskers protest passing through downtown TO.
I’m a little agog at how calmly we are all observing what’s essentially a death spiral for Canadian media, and a serious exodus of some of its most vulnerable and most crucial voices. Sure it’s the economy, stupid. Consider the implications for democracy & Canadian institutions.
But how do I fight the same in the country I thought was the place of safety & refuge? Where the lines aren’t as clear,where the support from within isn’t as forthcoming & where many would feed on a romanticized myth about Canada’s values and brush the real talk under the carpet?

Would you be as okay with a PM violating the constitution & dissolving a democratically elected parliament in a desperate bid to stay in power in your host country? I recall quite a few in Canada being very upset when PM Trudeau imposed an emergency for just a few days.
Kaavan the elephant ended up in Pakistan on the whims of a little girl whose dad was a military dictator, languished for 35 years, lost his best friend Saheli, 8 years ago, and was very lonely and sad. And then he made an unexpected ally. Cher.
Why is it that insane inflation , crippling debt and extremism is okay if it’s something those in Pakistan have to go through but not okay for the diaspora in the adopted country? Do people in Pakistan not have the same right to a quality of life and to democracy, as diaspora?
What I’ve been saying. The treatment of Amber Heard wasn’t just a “celebrity trial”. It was representational of a new era of misogyny and disinfo/propaganda narratives.
People wonder why I still care so much about this — because it’s still ongoing, it’s the biggest cultural phenomenon of the post-quarantine mandate era, and it has become the dominant political and cultural playbook spiraling out in numerous underrecognized ways

Health workers & journalists working under police/security escort.Medical professionals asked to hide their scrubs.The only ones free to do whatever they want are in the convoy- yet they’re the ones “demanding freedom”. What a pathetic moment in the history of a democracy.
You can’t just decide it was okay when your player was playing a rotten game but suddenly it’s a foul when that same game was played against him. Each political leader that was propped into power by the military establishment has learned that the hard way. It was IK’s turn.

This after admitting himself that this case had gone to the intelligence unit last year. He didn’t ask any questions or details, I kept volunteering info. He didn’t tell me what would happen next. But I’m going to hope he will get back to me and would like to help.
Weaponizing and co-opting the real pain of sexual violence survivors to encourage a narrative justifying mass killing, including violations of more women — and to gain social media clout—is one of the lowest things I’ve seen on here. And I have seen a lot.
With the disclaimer that I have ready every Stephen King book ever written:
13 US servicemen and 90 Afghans killed today. It IS an outrage.That you only thought it worthy to mention the 13 Americans lost. And that is also happening EVERY day.The dehumanisation of human beings.
13 US servicemen killed in Afghanistan today. It’s sad, and it’s an outrage.
200+ dead of COVID in Florida today. It’s sad, it’s an outrage, and it’s happening EVERY day.
When everything frm colonized history,to pop culture to literature has conditioned in you, yourself as the main character—must be hard to de-centre from the narrative. I don’t know what that privilege feels like. Learn to listen, without feeling the need to make it about you.
It’s a strange thing to get an award for.Relentless digital attacks on journalists which shouldn’t happen.Taking a stand for press freedom.Which should. But 5 years in this country, and this one time I felt seen. So thank you

Today, the Canadian Anti-Hate Network won a motion to dismiss a ‘trademark’ lawsuit filed by Caryma Sa’d, who has been authoring and encouraging various conspiracy theories about us and our work.
After being told that this has escalated,multiple journalists are targeted with death threats and are being surveilled and nothing has changed for nearly a year,he said he would need to see if these threats have any “credibility” and “they might not even be in the “ country”.
Watching two brilliant & caring BIPOC women getting horrific vitriol & racist abuse in the span of a day. It’s almost as if it’s impossible for the right to disagree with a thing w/out launching a violent mob to systematically attack a woman’s career,reputation & life to shreds.
Finally got through. An officer who was not my original case manager,didn’t file a new police report. Just added to the death threat report from last year.

Hey
@TwitterSupport
Why do you verify our accounts if you’re not going to get serious & take down dangerous fake accounts? Journalist’s professional reputations and work are tied to their social media and the impact of this is incredibly harmful. When will you shut it down?
Twitter. Seriously? Do something about this account.
It’s insane to me that all it takes is “
#parody
” in the bio and a user can completely get away with impersonating someone else.
This account is also sharing photoshopped, fake articles.
How many reports does it take?
Hate symbols have no place at rallies against oppression & mass violence.When a movement is gathering momentum &numbers, there's risk of being exploited by those propagating far-right extremism & disinformation. It's imp to stay vigilant about that at critical moments in history.
Why do you gaslight women reporting violence when femicide & gender-violence numbers are skyrocketing so sharply you can’t possibly deny that this is a problem ? Why are you unable or unwilling to coordinate with other law enforcement agencies in cases that require that effort?-2
Goodbye Twitter. It’s not been that nice anyway. Not sure if I will miss you. But we will be studying this moment for years to come. Case study of how a troubled white tech bro systematically ran a perfectly good product into the ground and exposed himself in the process.
Why did an officer show up to meet with my white supervisor when he called the police for me last time to shield me from precisely this but no one even bothered to come to talk to me,a brown immigrant woman when I called directly (as asked) to report yet another death threat? -3

When people harming vulnerable groups with deliberate one-sided narratives whine about being called out + call accountability “harassment” — while this is what harassment looks like in my world.
But false equivalence to further target victims is fun.
It’s called privilege.
I've been quiet because sometimes I observe ppl show themselves. When I was struggling

@Mailfence
There are clear threats to life and safety in those emails.When an account is shut down, they just make a new one.The platforms that they’re using need to find a way to track down anyone endangering public safety and espousing hate crimes and report them to law enforcement.
I love how some peoples’ experience of being “attacked” is not graphic rape and death threats every day followed by warnings to be “retired” or “silenced” unless they quit the country or journalism. Must be nice. Very cute.
#falseequivalence
This is the former dictator of Pakistan General Pervez Musharraf very clearly telling this journalist that hit squads should be sent to assassinate Pakistani dissidents/journos in exile. He calls it “proactive diplomacy”.
He says “everyone is doing it. We should too.”
If you have no connection to Afghanistan,or the impact of the Taliban era,or witnessed the blowback & consequent U.S. invasion in your own country with the blood of thousands OR spoken to any Afghan women about what they’ve gone thru,then I strongly advise more listen less talk.
Among other things, someone must really hate women to be defending this bunch. But then if you're someone who already has a history of reposting tweets calling women journalists "presstitutes", sexualizing and degrading them....

Some might say this is how the public humiliation and cred damage of a Muslim woman continues with no apparent backing from those who appointed and put her in this position. Where was the preemptive strategy to tackle the backlash the ruling party would have known was coming?
