In large swathes of the world, a father’s sister is an aunt, not a cousin. The ignorant commentary around - or perhaps wilful misrepresentation of - Mamdani’s Islamophobia speech is one example of how lack of cultural competency show up in everyday discourse.

Except nobody says it’s offensive to say Merry Christmas. To explain: Say you’re at a workplace where nobody ever wishes you for Diwali or Eid, come December you may feel imposed upon to have to wish others and receive wishes for something you don’t celebrate. That’s all it is.
This is taking place in a FreshCo grocery store in Brampton Ontario. Never let anyone tell you it’s offensive to say Merry Christmas. Ever.
