Master Thread 2.0 please have a read
1. Old master thread, mainly UK Education and politics.
Austerity and Academisation, how Goves Reforms let in the lobbyists and created revolving doors for a web of vested interests
So
@lbc
has Rachel Johnson interviewing her father Stanley about the policies of her brother the prime minister
And some people claim the UK is rife with nepotism...
1/Spoke to a school union rep yesterday, they accidentally saw an email from HR concerned about how covid was causing staffing issues
HR expressed suprise many staff were still testing
"While we can't staff from testing, perhaps we should remind them they don't need to test"
UK we're in trouble, succession of callers on LBC calling for herd immunity. Sudden uptick of my relatives sharing total nonsense on facebook, where is this all coming from?
Expecting teachers to work for free over the summer after a decade of austerity while telling them they have to face a pay freeze next year as well? After a year of abuse?
Jokers.
🧵How did we get here?
Sending unvaxed children into poorly ventilated rooms
Ignoring North America's warnings
Being told infection could be better than vaccination
Conspiracy theorists platformed by media
A look at how the foundations were made and long term implications
South Africa has seen a large rise in child hospitalisations
New York reporting large rise in child hospitalisations
UK seeing record child hospitalisations
Yet many in politics and media demanding schools must open also oppose any measures to cut transmission

🧵Thoughts on UK government covid strategy
They never abandoned the March 2020 strategy, just adapted it.They haven't learned to live with it, as they've done no learning, it's just herd immunity with the addition of vaccines
1/ Thread: Don't mean to join the tin foil hat brigade but I have concerns the rate of infections in schools is being suppressed from public knowledge.
In March the government made NHS bed capacity its key metric for success. This led to people being put into care homes without

It's a cross border project
The government is suppressing data on Delta B1.617.2 cases in schools, this could have implications not just for the UK but for the rest of the world, and yet most our media are giving Johnson a free pass on this.

Having spoken to certain journalists in recent weeks I know the log chats contain a lot more information than just this article
"We have to drop isolation at some point, so why not now?"
That's the message the media will ram down our throat
"What about the vulnerable?"
"They've been vaccinated, but of course they'll still have to take care"
"How"
"---------" Silence
They claimed children didn't transmit to get the parents back to work
Now they continue to claim covid doesn't harm children because to do so would mean many ppl admitting they'd advocated harmful policies
Putting self preservation ahead of protecting children
Its disgusting
post-covid hepatitis in children- report from Israel- 2 children required transplant, 3 recovered with steroids. Hard to fathom the damage the denial that COVID impacts children has done in the UK and many other countries🧵
Israel tracked the start of Delta wave to a couple who returned from holiday and disobeyed quarantine by sending their children to school, who brought Delta into the school and then the community
🧵The Swedish Deception
Extensive study on Sweden's covid strategy has been published in Nature. Contains extensive official documents and internal emails.
Very informative, let's take a look and compare to the UK
They stripped CAHMS of funding, cut 15k support staff jobs mainly TAs, cut social services and MH provision, ignored 10s of thousands of students being off rolled, pushed working parents into poverty
They want to pretend the past 10 years didn't happen?
Not me, I won't forget
The four horses of the education apocalypse are galloping towards pupils: a big loss of education attainment, huge rise in mental health problems, significant safeguarding hazards and a future loss of earnings of £40,000 per pupil.
We must open schools sooner rather than later.
3/ Staff and students have been hospitalised this year, with some ending up in ICU however this isn't common knowledge amongst staff and students
But the solution is apparently to encourage people to keep coming in whilst infectious, how does that improve absence?
🧵
@GavinWilliamson
Statement to the commons.
What a sham
"Important mitigations like hand washing and improved ventilation will remain"
What improved ventilation? How do they keep getting away with pushing this lie?
#edutwitter
🧵JCVI minutes published...
Looks like I was right, JCVI mainly only looked at PHE's own studies, the ones they've gaslit us with for over 18 months
Also show an unhealthy number of assumptions with little evidence to back them, and very positive about benefits of infection
2/ This is a school where due to long covid a number of staff are on long term phased returns, have had to reduce responsibilities, or have developed ongoing health problems
Student absence is high, lots of fever or GI symptoms, third of some classes are absent
I tell you what's reduced enjoyment of life, two years trying to support and educate children as covid runs rampant through our schools
The geog teacher off due to blood clots in the lungs, the CEV Science teacher now awaiting a lung transplant, my GCSE students with long covid
This constant barrage of hatred is definitely unpleasant and it reduces my enjoyment of life and scientific productivity. Though, it won't convince me to reconsider my opinions, and I won't leave twitter as a result, however nasty my detractors may choose to be.
2/
The efforts by schools to try and improve attendance by any means has led to the inverse of public health and child welfare

4/ The HR email also considered how staff could be encouraged to not to take a second test after testing positive and to return whilst still being symptomatic
Should be noted that increasing number of students are showing signs of long covid like chronic fatigue
Student goes to Reading Festival, LFTs are negative, Friday student has temperature and a cough, parent sends them in because of LFTs, ends up in a classroom with me without windows or ventilation, Monday student now off with covid.
DfE says no-one in the room is a close contact
1/ I don't think there are any other countries now taking the same approach to schools as the UK.
Most have masks in schools, most have reduced class sizes for social distancing, most have shut already for Christmas, most have access to regular testing
Sorry kids its another year of infection and disruption for you, government doesn't see clean safe air as a priority, not when there's migrant chasing armoured jetskis to buy

Hopkins was asked why the covid booster wasn't being offered to more people
She said most people had a good level of immunity, when it was pointed out that some ppl hadn't had a booster for more than a year, she said coming into contact with covid would boost immunity
Our new technical briefing has been published today, including the latest epidemiological and genomic analysis of the emergent BA.2.86 variant. Prof Susan Hopkins, Chief Medical Advisor, explains more 🔽 Read the full technical briefing:

not pointing out changes to how rail operates means only government have ability to negotiate pay so gov telling unions it won't get involved means there's no way for it to be resolved
Fascinating to see how much

has upset the pro infection lobby, also interesting how they have responded not with examining and countering what he said with scientific arguments but with school ground name calling
🧵A rough timeline of Gaslighting on Children and Schools
April 2020 - April 2022
Triggered by this exchange between Deepti and Shamez
UK policy, SAGE,JCVI etc had generally relied on their own studies and data, international work rarely referenced in meeting minutes
Citing more than 30 child deaths the UKHSA has finally recommended that parents don't send sick kids into school, problem is the DfE is still pushing its 100% attendance agenda, children off sick for more than a few days will still be marked unauthorised
1/ 🧵Gaslighting🧵 24/1/21
Dail Mail annoyed a lot of people with its teacher bashing today.
Also misrepresents the unions saying we are telling members not to do live lessons, NEU recently set up a hub where people can share best practice and resources.
🧵To say let we just need to accept vulnerable deaths when we haven't bothered to invest in ventilation and filtration is just barbaric, we probably can't get to zero deaths but we can reduce deaths without inconvenience
This is one of the most misinformed & disgusting pieces I've read. Shocking to think that scientists in NERVTAG advising govt are saying this. 'Living with it' doesn't mean doing nothing & letting 'mostly the old and vulnerable die'. I'm so tired.
@johnredwood
Not enough staff after a decade of austerity, same reason schools have to have classes of 60 in a hall in the middle of a pandemic. Same reason we don't have enough police to enforce any of the covid rules.
You broke the public sector, own it
🧵Quite amazing most the media do not seen concerned we are seeing some of the same individuals involved in Cambridge Analytica engaged in covid disinformation
That CNP (Bannon, Mercers, etc) set up disinformation groups
This is such an important point—particularly considering that former Cambridge Analytica psychologist Patrick Fagan has been involved in coordinating a massive COVID-19 disinformation campaign.
🧵Notice how the people who keep saying "stop fearmongering" over a multisystem neurotropic virus, seem to spend their whole time fearmongering about everything else?
Couple of examples coming up
Bloody Sikhs coming over here, setting up businesses, training to work in public service and providing food out of the kindness of their hearts
Next thing you know they will be producing children with silly names like Karam.
🧵Teachers Strikes and disinformation, this figure of 140k missing "ghost children" who never returned to education is an outright lie that has become an alternative "fact" of the pandemic
I'd like to point out those calling to end isolation and saying don't worry about mass infection of children or long covid, are the same people who claimed we wouldn't get such spiralling infection rates in schools.
Why trust them now?
What's happening in schools isn't surprising. We wrote an open letter to
@GavinWilliamson
on 4th May warning about spread of new variants & educational disruption if govt removed mitigations from schools. SAGE also advised against this- they knew the risks
Worth noting that Downdens anti woke speech was for the Heritage Foundation

The last lockdown ended 29 months ago!
I'm sorry but I cant take seriously any discussion about absence which doesn't mention long covid and increases sickness rates
The full picture on kids missing school in England is out and it’s a pretty shocking picture 22% missing at least 10% of school time. - but in secondaries that rose to 28% - almost a third of children missing so much is a terrible legacy of the pandemic
I don't understand why all the focus is on the first wave, when it was the Alpha wave that was truly staggering, ignoring all the warnings, threatening legal action in Dec to keep schools open, trying to send schools back on 4th January

Good job ppl like the UKs clinical lead on covid in children didn't outright rule out such harms or they might be looking a bit silly at the moment...
1/ Short Thread: So I knew government had banned schools from closing early, and removed blended learning as an option, putting all decision making into hands of DfE.
They also banned schools from having inset days at the end of term, which is quite bizarre.
1/ Sealioning academics
So they are back to attacking clean air in schools, enough evidence has been shown that this reduces transmission
Granted they've got a new twist on putting up barriers against a simple non restrictive measure
1/🧵Had a call from

about this story this morning, pleased to see the guardian hunting for the truth, horrified that yet again Johnson appears to be again suppressing information
If schools are acting as reservoirs amplifying transmission we deserve to know!
"Downing Street leaned on
@PHE_uk
not to publish crucial data on the spread of the new Covid variant in schools."
Not only is govt not 'following the data', they seem to be suppressing data to rationalise flawed policies that put people at risk 🧵
⚠️This is absolutely fucking outrageous!
£30k, thats what it cost Luke Johnson to set up the CRG
£30k is what it costs for Collateral Global/GBD to buy itself an APPG in Westminster
And then we fund the fucking rest of it out of the public purse

A Call For Action!
While US offers vaccines and billions for clean air, Johnson has abandoned our schools, staff and students to taking the Delta variant on the chin
Help isnt coming
Theres just us, and what we choose to do about it
🧵Action plan🧵
1/ "We have to learn to live with covid"
Sunetra Gupta said the West needed to become more accepting of deaths
Now her supporters are baffled by excess deaths, blaming them on vaccines even though most the UK haven't had access to a booster for over 2 years
I think the greatest threat to patients isn't a few days of strikes, its having a libertarian banker as health secretary who doesn't even think we should have infection control on hospitals
Who speaks about endemicity without having a bloody clue what he's talking about
Vulnerable patients will miss appointments.
Doctors and nurses won’t be able to get to work.
It’s time
@wesstreeting
put patients first, stands up for the NHS and condemns the unjustified rail strikes.
They are saying the quiet bit out loud now
Booster infections for the under 65s
No mention that in the US and many other countries vax is available to everyone 6months and older
Adam Finn is now saying the same as Sunetra Gupta of the GBD
🧵LibertAryans🧵
Many have mused about the motivations behind the pro-infection herd immunity lobby, many have suggested the attitude behind this has more than a whiff of a eugenics mentality, afteral we know letting it rip hits certain communities harder than others
The government is going to hand out around 300,000 carbon dioxide monitors to state schools in a £25 million scheme to help improve ventilation from September
🧵Previous CLoCk studies and paper by Ladhani and co, have a tendency to get a lot of press coverage
This papers has been out for 5 days and there's been no reporting, many authors haven't even tweeted the study...
So, studies have now shown that 2nd infections in children are 1) associated with the same risk of long COVID as 1st infections 2) the risk is not uncommon (5-16%); and 3) associated with similar risk of hospitalisation.
This is not unexpected 🧵
Oh fuck off
#r4today
, how dare you!
Talk of scrapping isolation without talking of measures to cut transmission and then have your reporter claim the unions would support this!
Why didn't you invite the unions for interview rather than putting words into our mouths?
Johnson: The new strain is particularly prevelant in London and areas of the South East
Hancock: Infections in students are driving transmission in London
Any bet failure to tackle transmission in schools turned them into petri fishes for the new strain

10% absence rate is 3 days off in the average half term
We can't "reset the dial" to pre-covid levels of absence if we have introduced a new disease into constant circulation into schools capable of reinfections
@mrjamesob
@LBC
DfE stats shows the main cause of student absence is sickness, primarily covid
ONS stats also shows over 60k children have long covid
Covid is still rife in schools, this is the main cause of the rise, lockdown was nearly 3 years ago
Wondering why the authors of this paper aren't tweeting like mad about their findings or making sure it gets high profile coverage in newspapers like they usually do
So, studies have now shown that 2nd infections in children are 1) associated with the same risk of long COVID as 1st infections 2) the risk is not uncommon (5-16%); and 3) associated with similar risk of hospitalisation.
