COVID INQUIRY: X Megathread 🧵 As module 3 of the @covidinquiryuk draws to a close, I’ve been looking back at what we’ve learned about how it all went so wrong with infection control guidance for hospitals. This is a long thread, so please grab a cuppa & make yourself comfy…

So let me get this straight The droplet dogma, anti-respirator, anti-airborne, status quo, close contact, hand washing gatekeepers say there is no way to prevent a future pandemic !?! Huh 🤔
The NHS have published a pandemic response document suggesting “it will not be possible to halt the spread of a new pandemic virus and it would be a waste of public health resources to attempt to do so”. I would like to draw their attention to exhibits A, B & C below ⬇️

The NHS know flu season is going to be horrendous this year. But still they do nothing! What will it take for them to DO something to reduce airborne transmission in hospitals? FFP masks. Ventilation. Air filtration. These were all recommended by experts at the Covid Inquiry.
An unprecedented flu wave with ‘no peak in sight’ comes as the NHS prepares for the added pressure of strike action. https://t.co/VVo9ExIBpf

Never ever NHS recognised the nth Covid wave after >5 years of persistent & recurrent Covid waves, recognised post outbreak mitigations are always too late, adapted & improved mitigations, huge flu surge & next Covid waves mitigated ❌

Huge summer/early autumn Covid wave ✅ Huge flu wave on back of that + 6 years of immune damaging Covid infections across the population ✅ Hospitals swamped, news articles about flu pumped out, Covid not mentioned ✅ NHS waits until absolute breaking point before masks ✅

"Indoor air quality emerged as a critical risk factor for transmission within classrooms, with more transmissions in school classes with lower air quality throughout the study. Most infections occurred in the school class where CO₂ exceeded 1,000 ppm..."
A school classroom functions as an epidemiological unit where students share the same air, the same micro environment, and multiple potential sources of infection at the same time. The main risk is not close contact, but prolonged exposure to contaminated air that accumulates in

It’s almost like the most obvious thing on the planet if you have eyes and four neurons is that putting a lot of kids in a small crowded poorly ventilated space for hours on end with airborne pathogens leads to predictable outcomes. Huh. 🤔 clean the air.
67 students. 6 weeks. 87 infections. A new study finds the real driver of school virus spread isn’t close contact — it’s air. Poor ventilation (CO₂ >1000 ppm) nearly doubles transmission risk. Hours in shared classrooms (RR 3.17) matter far more than minutes spent near someone

@PJeffcock @erbrooker @CleanAir4KidsUK @EKBaines They've introduced "covid-style measures" like "opening windows"? I'm just staggered at how primitive the UK is

Please someone in MSM - you HAVE to report on this!! This is “let the bodies pile high” on steriods! Chosing to save money over saving lives. As an NHS doctor of 26years - NOT in my name Disgusted, shocked & sickened at what I’m reading. @BBCNews @itvnews @ShaunLintern

It’s not that we’ve learned nothing, it’s that we’ve taken a special pride in learning nothing.

COVID INQUIRY 🚨CATA has issued an open letter to Baroness Hallett warning that key Module 1 recommendations are being disregarded. Of particular concern is the NHS stance that any attempt to halt the spread of a new pandemic virus would be “a waste of public health resources”.

Folks who learned to code in the 2000-2007 period were forged in darkness. Born too late for Usenet and BBS but too early for Stackoverflow or Github and certainly far before LLMs. When we got stuck, we sprinkled print statements everywhere. When we googled our stacktraces, we

The UK Govs health team seem shocked that flu is skyrocketing & placing an horrendous strain on health services. Yet they do nothing to advise the public about ways to avoid AIRBORNE infections. It’s as if they themselves must uphold the Gov narrative of “personal responsibility”

Flu rates are surging rapidly, particularly in children, but now also affecting adults as it spreads like wildfire through households. Only 3.3M school-age children (reception to Y11) have been vaccinated out of a possible 8.1M, so flu vax coverage is just 41% for that cohort.

I've also heard from people who think we're employed by UKHSA. We're not. This map is a free, grassroots public health initiative, built and maintained by two guys trying to squeeze it into spare moments between f/t work and caring for vulnerable family members. 14/15

I have heard the requests for us to map flu as well as covid, and believe me I'm trying to find a way. But there is no good source of local prevalence data, and there are technical problems with using the winter emergency NHS stats on their own. We will keep trying. 13/15

Flu data isn't available in as local a form as covid data, though as the increase in flu seems uniform it might not matter. Flu beds are just short of 2,000, close to 2023's peak. 10/15

London is certainly seeing a late wave now. Islington is the outlier at 23.53%, but levels are increasing in every borough, and edging upwards in most hospitals. 4/15

The PCR positivity map is out, and positivity in England, adjusted for non-reporting, is steady at 3.27%. In Scotland it's up slightly to 2.99%. There are clear hotspots across the map. https://t.co/1phcyp7RiP 1/15

Spain has masks back in hospitals & free Covid and flu vaccines… The UK tells you to wash your hands to protect against these airborne viruses & expects no one to question the logic This really is the worst place to be right now
Health authorities in 🇪🇸 extend flu and COVID-19 vaccination to the entire population in the Valencian Community 🇬🇧 still washing their hands @wesstreeting @UKHSA @NHSuk @UKLabour
