@jreneebad
stories like this makes me believe in angels. Although a sad story, this is a beautiful memory. Thanks for sharing and my condolences on this loss. I am sure he is proud of you.

At Meharry we have a community engagement core where we rewrite scientific abstracts in layman’s terms 4-6th grade level and publish them in a community newsletter
Proud moment: Gave a lecture at a local comm college to recruit students to my lab for summer. One of two students who worked in lab stopped by to tell me he got a full ride to Vanderbilt Chem Eng. He says it was all because of my talk in his Org Chem class. 😊
Not matter where I work, I talk with the janitors, security guards, admin etc. Upon leaving lab the security guard asked me if I was graduating next week. 😂 thanks for this. Second/third brilliant compliment I got today. Felt the love today.
Extremely excited to receive my NoA from the AD Strategic Fund: APOE Biology in Alzheimer's (ABA)

This award will help us understand how SNPs associated with health disparities influence lipid loading to APOE (shown below).

Greetings All, I'm Jamaine Davis, an Assistant Professor at Meharry Med College. My lab seeks to understand the impact/s genetic variants have on protein structure/function and how this can lead to such diverse phenotypes.

I am Jamaine Davis, Assistant Prof at Meharry. Proteins are critical for life. To function, they adopt a pref 3D shape (conformation). My lab studies why aberrant protein conformations occur, and ways to correct the defects in protein structure/function.
Two outstanding summer students in the Davis Lab! Look out for their MD and PhD applications. I think I even convinced another MD applicant to pursue MD/PhD!
@MeharryMedical
After delivering a plenary talk at
#cellbio23
, it was great having lunch with
@jscdavis
. Twenty years ago when I was an undergrad and he was a grad student, he used to tell me I would be right where I am today. Mentors matter!
Didnt take long to happen to me. Coming in lab today stopped by woman asking if I was here to pick up boxes. Then she repeatedly says I cant come in. Show her my ID and said Im a professor and Im going to my office. She is not security. I belong here too. When will this end?
NOA just received to sponsor a summer program for community college students, undergraduate and medical students to understand how human pathogens use molecules like proteins to cause damage to our cells and possible ways to develop new drugs.

Happy New Year! Welcome Bryan Nicholson-Dews
@brynicdew
to the Davis lab! Bryan has joined the lab as a Research Associate. He will study how genetic variants impact protein structure and function using cryoEM and computational methods.

After many tries, I was finally selected for the NIH LRP. One of the best awards I received. If you have any questions, I can help with your application.
Woo hoo! The application cycle is officially open! 🎉🎉If you're conducting

Career goal: Publishing an article w multiple Black scientists. 52 Black scientists? Happy to know most of them
Thanks to
@isabelgoldm
and
@phdgprotein86
for such an amazing collection of voices and perspectives that would likely never get the attention it so rightly deserves.
Our Juneteenth-themed issue is out! It features several articles highlighting the voices, perspectives and stories of over 70 outstanding Black scientists!
On the cover, Mays et al. describe the historical context of the Juneteenth holiday in the

Not good advice for introverts. There is no real protocol. Yes, go conferences. Enjoy the science. See if there is an orientation for newbies. Try to talk to at least one new person. Make a friend or a "conference buddy".
If you see me, say Hello!

I was fortunate enough to witness Dr. Hrabowski energy during my time working at UMBC. I am excited about this program in his name and excited for all the new Scholars, many I know.
Please join us in celebrating the new Freeman Hrabowski Scholars, who will help us build a strong foundation for the next generation of scientists!

One of the men who work in housekeeping came into my office and said, "I looked you up". You went to Drexel and Penn. You worked hard to get here!" - Great honor to be recognized by my community. Somebody cutting onions
Those who consider themselves allies, SPEAK UP!
'I’ve had supposed colleagues critique my efforts within the first 30 seconds of meeting me, talk around and over me, push my name down the author list for no justifiable reason, and tell me I only earned awards because I’m Black.'
Please stop using HBCUs as your only example of poor institutions. I know you mean well, but all it does is create a negative bias against HBCU PIs. This article could have made its point simply by saying "low-resourced" institutions. [The Poor = Black mindset is just lazy.]
The only way I would love being an academic more, is if we were all at the same institution (or at least in the same city). Of course, there are even more trailblazers not in this pic.🔥🔥
The hardest thing I've ever done in life happened two years ago. I gave the eulogy at my nephew/son's funeral. I have not been the same person since experiencing such pain.

Will never forget the black women i knew and the random black people i met while a grad student who gave me love. While preparing for prelim, Ms Vena walked into the conf rm and said, "I'm so happy to see you here." She almost started crying. Dedicated my thesis to the ancestors

pure silence. Because they are not consistent, my hypothesis is they never cared about Black/Brown lives.
got a pretty rude email from a prog manager telling me what the mentors in the program will not do for students. Based on the undertones, old me would've sent a reply. New me patiently waited. Growth. 🙂
The other mentors/faculty cc'd on email checked that person.

donations will not matter if there is no accountability for where the money is and has gone. The best thing is to hold admin/leadership accountable. Ask where is my donation going, or specify where you want it to go: upgrading internet, upgrading classrooms, etc
I’ve been blessed to be able to train students in the lab. It’s a rewarding job. Each year they give me the best gifts! Had it for a week almost and just realized it had been engraved.😊

faculty and trainees! Join us on January 12, 2023, for a hybrid presentation of how to bring cryoEM to your lab/institution, start a new collaboration or send your samples to one of the national cryoEM centers.
@BlackinBiophys
Had an amazing group of students this summer. Bryan started early and today was his last day. Within three weeks he purified protein, conducted binding assays and set up crystal trays!! My mom joined us for lunch.
Not a productive day. Purifying protein. Setup FLPC to go O/N. This AM, realized I didn't put sample line in sample last night. Setup to run again, did the same thing. 3rd run, got protein. Run protein gel. 12 kDa protein runs off the gel. Clearly structure must be important.
Found out a colleague gave one of the most amazing compliments about me behind closed doors. It was so amazing, I was impressed and I don't impress easily. Sending out positive vibes, peace and blessings
Many colleges/universities are providing new and significant resources for diversity and inclusion. For some the first time reaching out to HBCU/MSIs. So it really was that easy. We've been asking nicely for years.
