On this day in 1868 W.E.B. Du Bois was born. This is his doctoral dissertation, “The Suppression of the African Slave Trade in the United States of America, 1638-1871,” completed in 1895. Du Bois was the first African-American to receive a master’s degree and Ph.D. from Harvard.

On this day in 1880, Helen Keller was born. After graduating from Radcliffe College in 1904, she worked extensively in causes for the blind all over the world. In 1955, she became the first woman to receive an honorary degree from Harvard.
