Professor Luis Cuevas 1956-2023
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Luis Cuevas, a valued friend, colleague and mentor to many and a member of the LSTM family for 35 years.
Our incredible history began on this day, 119 years ago, with a dinner and a philantropic donation of £350 from
#Liverpool
shipping magnate Sir Alfred Jones. It led to us becoming the world's first School of Tropical Medicine and it's been quite a ride ever since!

's JE Dutton first demonstrated the 'sleeping sickness' (trypanosome) parasite in human blood in 1902. His patient was Kelly, a master of a government steamer on the river Gambia. The patient survived, but Dutton passed away in 1905.
