putting aside the lofty rhetoric, what he's really saying is: "settler colonialism is just and if you resist it anywhere we will crush you". That's what they mean by "condemnation"
WTF?! she's literally bragging about using "AI" to support genocide, and is so fucking gleeful about it along with all the people in the replies. The fact that they can do this out in the open, with absolutely no sense of shame, is more horrifying than their shitty bot-farm tech
I am once again reminding everyone in tech to stop referring to "out of control" spaces, or whatever really, as the "wild west". Where do you think that saying comes from, and what do you think it both justifies and erases?
Settlers are going full mask-off in every major institution in so-called Canada because they see their colleagues getting away with it. They've been waiting for this moment and it's going to get worse, they want what Israel has: blanket immunity to do the worst things imaginable.

Canada has had "ceasefires" for over a hundred years but that hasn't stopped their genocides of Indigenous Peoples. "Preventing acts of genocide" means "ceasing fire" and goes way further. We have 94 TRC Calls to Action on this, 231 MMIWG Calls for justice. Don't get distracted.
does anyone else find it concerning that within hours, columbia, stanford & michigan put out almost identical statements? all using the diminutive genocide of "any peoples" w/o naming the current genocide? 2 using the the same first sentence entirely?

Most people in power will never want settler colonialism to end, anywhere, for if it ends in one place it may end in another until it gets to them. Why would they want this? How do you think they got power in the first place? It's times like this you see where their loyalty lies.
It's so depressing that Indigenous Peoples are working so hard to protect our data only for them to be stolen by settlers and their so-called AIs. These "AI" reshape our data back into the very same stereotypes we've been fighting so hard to counter. Big tech fuels our genocides.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he's worried that Israel's tactics in the war against Hamas could put its long-term security and diplomatic support at risk. .

I hate to say it, but someone needs to: "Every Child Matters" is terrible framing and it's not a coincidence that settlers love it. This is not a critique of Indigenous people who say it, that's different. But under the colonial gaze Indigenous children aren't "real children"...

When you realize that settlers all around the world live in a constant state of cognitive dissonance and denial, it does not come as a surprise that they telegraph their true selves in how they depict "the natives" both at "home" and abroad. It's projection at a societal scale
If you claim to support Indigenous sovereignty and self-determination, you better be supporting the right of Palestinians to defend themselves however they deem appropriate. Israel is bombing Gaza into oblivion right now, supported by every settler colonial project in the world.
Today I learned that the CEO of intel co-founded "Transforming the Bay with Christ", an org that's "Connecting and Equipping Leaders to help Ignite a Gospel Movement in the Bay Area".
Meanwhile, Israel's "assassination factory" powered by "AI" is literally called "the Gospel"...

Seeing "AI" grifters get more involved in Indigenous spaces is making me nervous, especially the big consultancy firms. I really gotta write something proper about all this but I get too angry every time I try because of how absurd it all is.
you can go ahead and cancel any speaking gigs you got me slotted for, talking about Indigenous data sovereignty, if you don't want to me to talk about *checks notes* Indigenous sovereignty
I feel like I have to beg the world at this point to take the harms of tech seriously. The stuff I see every day, people merrily going about their business coding stuff that kills, thinking they are the "good guys" while doing it. It's just an extension of "killing at a distance"
I'm not surprised at how quickly many settlers are to go all-in on genocidal rhetoric, I've heard it my entire life in jokes, comments, accusations, even common sayings. However, watching it unfold at this scale is rather mind numbing and demoralizing. I suppose that's the point.
Just in from Canadian Press: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada does not support the premise of South Africa's case at the International Court of Justice that accuses Israel of genocide against
Palestinians in Gaza.
How any Indigenous person (any person really) can support this is mind-boggling to me. I never want to hear them talk about their love for "the land", I never want to hear them say "Land Back" if this is what they mean. You don't do this out of love for the land, for each other.
Anti-Indigenous racism in healthcare: it's so insidious that even the major report on it (In Plain Sight) was led by a person who made a career on being Indigenous while she wasn't (Turpel-Lafond). Zionists are heavily engaged in this self-indigenization as a "move to innocence".
Terrifying: 555 doctors from U of Toronto wrote a letter declaring their right to work openly as Zionists. As McGill U Prof Gil Troy wrote in his White supremacist letter, "These [doctors] had the Zionist impulse to defend Western civilization."

Has anyone coined the phrase "data nullius"?
I don't know latin so I don't know if that even makes sense, but the gist is this colonial notion of data not "belonging" to anyone so it's free for the taking. It's not the same thing as "open data", although there are overlaps.
Capitalists promoting AI/ML aren't coming for your jobs, they must exploit your labour so they can enrich themselves. But they are coming for your wages, and your selfish unwillingness to show any class solidarity leaves you vulnerable to being deskilled just like everyone else.
Israel has likely studied every colonial occupation in recorded history, taken what "works", and then accelerated their project will the full backing of every other colonial power who see themselves reflected even if only subconsciously. It's an amalgamation of unspeakable horror

Canada will brutally crush any Indigenous resistance and then justify it via the rhetoric of "self-defense". All its political parties show this via their full support of Israel's genocide of Palestinians. Meanwhile, the corporate media will manufacture all the consent they need.
RCMP used "overwatch," ie. snipers, at Nov 2021 arrests on Wet'suwet'en territory, according to officer currently testifying in Smithers court.
This is the same controversial tactic previously reported about their Jan 2019 enforcement. I don't know why I still find it alarming.
"techno nullius" is a similar concept - this notion that technologies are "free for the taking", like they have no relationality to place or people, and then can be "staked" or "claimed" then legally "protected" by a colonial authority who benefits from their original "theft".
We want to digitize our information to support the rebuilding of our nations, but I wonder if we're just setting ourselves up for yet another form of colonial dispossession. Making our cultures more accessible to our own Peoples is of upmost importance, but at what cost...
Canada: "yeah, we're stealing it all, but dang it costs a lot to do so, I mean, is it even worth it? Like, look at all this money we're losing!"
Indigenous Peoples: "So if colonization is such a liability, can we have the land back?"
Canada: "lol no, why would we do that?" 🤡
The Ontario government told a judge today the cost of "colonization" infrastructure built to take natural resources from upper Great Lakes Anishinaabe territory is relevant when determining those resources' modern-day value to the Crown.
The generative AI hype cycle reminds me of all the vultures who build their careers on "studying" us and "honouring" us - by selling our data back to us. This is why we have UNDRIP article 31(1) which is ignored by everyone who profits off the theft of our data - including tech.

It's not complicated. Israel is an explicitly genocidal settler colonial project. If you think this project should exist, that says more about you than anyone else. Actively supporting this project says even more about you. We shouldn't need to spell this out, yet here we are.
Colonial Broadcasting Corporation has been running nonstop headlines on car theft over the last few days, even highlighting the story of a real estate broker (ironic considering the whole, you know, stolen land thing). I wonder what they are working so hard to distract us from 🤔
As an "Impact Strategist" for an Indigenous tech company, every project we work on we must consider how the data our software makes more accessible can also be stolen or used against us. It's lonely work full of contradictions and there's few people we can look to for guidance.
I have been staring, off and on for the better part of today, at the last sentence of the first paragraph, trying to make sense of it.
The sociologists around the world speaking up and out are overwhelmingly calling for a ceasefire, and an end to genocide, not this.
I'm so glad I did not participate in this article, that talks about a "schism" and platforms 100% Israeli researcher's voices during a genocide of Palestinians. Very "balanced."
Some of those platformed voices were ones that incessantly harassed us (wonderful).
A cease fire is the most basic of all peaceful, humanitarian demands and it even fits nicely into the "peacekeeper" narrative that Canadians are indoctrinated into (don't get me started on the hypocrisy of that). Yet here we are. This isn't just propaganda, it's deeper than that.
There's a more complicated analysis to be had, I obviously don't mean all settlers and I use it as a wonky analytical term. Still, there's some deep psychological stuff going on here that is really freaking me out how certain people can be so bloodthirsty.
When you realize that settlers all around the world live in a constant state of cognitive dissonance and denial, it does not come as a surprise that they telegraph their true selves in how they depict "the natives" both at "home" and abroad. It's projection at a societal scale
It's not "human extinction" that we should worry about, that's a rhetorical trick used to distract you. It's the day-to-day oppression at the intersection of capitalism and tech that we must always consider. Pay attention to the man behind the curtain.
“Putting existential AI risk on the same level as climate change and pandemics is misleading, since both of these are very concrete, current risks, whereas the risk of AI destroying humanity is very hypothetical."

Israel is a settler-colonial project, it does the same things that all of these projects do around the world: displace, assimilate, or kill the natives to steal their land. "Clear the plains". That's what settler colonialism is, it's not complicated. This should be obvious by now
Israel is a settler-colonial project, so when you say Israel has a "right to exist" logic dictates that you think settler colonialism is a righteous endeavor.
Settler-colonialism is by definition genocidal, this is core to its "logic of elimination".
Combine these statements.
As many as 700,000 Israeli settlers are living illegally in the occupied West Bank as settler violence surges.

Serious question: Say "reconciliation" does occur (whatever that even means). Would that make us, as the Indigenous Peoples of these lands, complicit in Canada's foreign policy? In other words, does "reconciliation" include involvement in foreign policy? I don't see why not.
It's really hard to work on Indigenous tech today after watching the weekend unfold. The things we gotta do to make every penny count while not harming our Peoples... meanwhile tech bro colonizers bathe in their stolen capital while claiming they are saviours of humanity...
