Now out @BloodJournal: Ferroptosis regulates hemolysis in stored RBCs. We identify STEAP3 (p53 target) as a key driver of stored RBC hemolysis by Fe-dependent lipid peroxidation. @grkeele @jameszimring @bstockwell Gary Churchill @jacksonlab @GrierPage .

Blood is a window on systems health. Great work from Higgins and colleagues @Nature shows that stability or setpoints in complete blood count parameters in 10s of thousands of patients over 20 years is associated with clinical risk and all cause mortality.

The Human Cell Atlas. Important work to map the 30-37 trillion cells in the human body. Hopefully these efforts will not completely ignore red blood cells, up to 83% of the cells in this count.

A big day of output for the Human Cell Atlas, a global collaborative project with 100 countries to understand our ~37 trillion cells.A Wikipedia of our cells, a "remarkable achievement" .

Interesting study! Missense PLA2G6 SNPs are common in blood donors and are linked to RBC hemolysis from our study here - . Another link between RBC hemolysis and kidney disease?

My Twitter/X feed has turned into a mix of political propaganda/brainless videos, drowning out the interesting posts that originally attracted me to this platform. Like many others, I am giving it a good old try to BlueSky social. I will likely slowly discontinue my presence here

Once again, the study of blood donors and transfusion medicine is not only immediately relevant per se, but allows us to unravel some novel fundamental biology of relevance to erythrocyte metabolism in health and disease, but also potentially to all other cell systems.

Death by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation in a cell that harbors 66% of bodily iron is no surprise. Yet here we show that ferroptosis can be triggered by biochemical events in the absence of de novo gene expression in the mature RBC, that lacks nuclei and organelles.

The study expands on the rapidly growing field of ferroptosis (special thanks to @bstockwell) by reconciling historical hallmarks of erythrocyte non-apoptotic cell death or eryptosis with ferroptosis.
