After tracking teens every day on their phones we decided to take stock of the larger literature. It turns out that once you separate facts from the fears, there are few convincing connections between digital technology use and adolescents' mental health.

Just out: A building body of research -- including a big meta-analysis out today -- suggests that we should probably stop blaming smart phones and social media for our mental health problems.

Why simply asking teens if they think social media is bad for them tells us very little about its’ impact on mental health. “We don’t go around and ask ‘do you think vaccines are effective’ and then conclude that that’s the effectiveness of vaccines”

Relying only on kids’ reports to measure screen time is a real problem - but even if we could measure it perfectly, the real problem is sorting out cause from effect, for that we will need smarter studies not smartphones that can simply count hours online.

Maybe it is time for adults to stop arguing about whether digital tech is universally bad or good for adolescents' mental health. The consensus across large scale studies @OrbenAmy @ShuhBillSkee , meta-analyses, narrative reviews, and our daily work is tiny to NO associations.
