There remains much to do to make sure everyone has a shot at good health and deep fulfillment. But I leave this role feeling hopeful because I have seen people across ages and communities step up to make it possible. I remain committed to working to make this vision a reality.

I will miss this work deeply. I will miss the people encountered in small towns and big cities across America. Their stories shaped the issues I worked on. They helped me widen the lens through which we see health – that it is physical, mental, social, and spiritual.

My mother, father, and sister have been my enduring sources of unconditional love at every step. And my children have kept me grounded and boosted my spirits with their hugs. When I asked what I should do next, they both said, “play with me more.” I plan to do that.

My service wouldn’t have been possible without my wife. Alice has been my rock, taking on more with our kids and at home so I could focus on Covid, last minute work trips, and many public health emergencies. In difficult moments when I doubted myself, her faith carried us both.
