All small countries neighbouring India are suffering from external funding crises and deeper structural issues. India’s problems are internal (fiscal deficit & inflation) but there’s no ext funding crisis given diversified export basket, large forex reserves & low ext debt.
Has anyone seen an article about the possibility that South Asia is experiencing a systemic region-wide crisis similar to the one that hit Southeast Asia in 1997? Because if not, I am happy to write an article exploring that scary possibility.
Funny the article mentions that India designated Nijjar as a terrorist. Headline says separatist. Tweet link says activist. Have some editorial std and stick to it. One thing that’s clear from story is why there was delay between the killing and Canadian govt going public.
New: Weeks ago, Canada began pushing its closest allies, the Five Eyes, to make a joint statement about Nijjar's killing, possibly at the G20. Countries including the US deferred, fearing angering India and spoiling its coming-out party

Yes the part about mangal sutra, gold and land being confiscated was a clever and homespun example that conveys the dangers of RG’s rhetoric. The part about Muslims/MMS comments was an exaggeration and tacked on to inflame the passions. He knew what he was doing.
It won’t change unless the selection process changes. My solution is to implement Agnipath type scheme for IAS/IPS. Just double/treble the intake by simplifying the exam with moderate cutoffs. But these recruits will be hired on a 5 year contract w/o pension or pay comm scales.
Many Indians still don't get it

None of whom are coming to Chennai. So it’s not needed. But in case there’s need for land I would first relocate all state and central govt offices including legislature, courts and army installations away from the city. Let them move to a satellite city.
This is not the lesson to draw from history. USSR didn’t help India during the war with China in ‘61. Russia will side with China if another war with India breaks out. They will stop supply of arms to India. So yeah it is naive to think Russia will be a dependable ally.
This historical episode, and India's other wars against Pakistan, are an important reason why India still considers Russia an ally to this day.
The USSR helped India in the Cold War, while the U.S. sided with Pakistan.
Absolute 🐐 mentality. He’s India’s greatest sportsperson in my books. Neeraj Chopra, Dhyan Chand and Viswanathan Anand are the top 3. Elite talents and personalities who kicked open the doors for others to follow.
Neeraj Chopra- I want to thank the people of India for staying up late. This medal is for all of India. I'm Olympic champion now I'm world champion. Keep working hard in different fields. We have to make a name in the world.

You would think the 5th largest economy and soon to be ‘$ 5 trillion’ economy would invest more in economic data collection, analysis and dissemination. What with digital this and digital that chest thumping. At least generate monthly spending & jobs metrics from formal sector.

This veg-non veg fracas is curious case where the left/Ambedkarite types don’t practice what they profess to follow. Why should an egalitarian & progressive movement harass a minority group instead of accommodating them? Since by all accounts vegetarians are a minority in India.
If there are 6 vegetarian tables in a canteen out of 129 (rest are all to be used for non-vegetarian food) and the ‘protest’ is against these 6 tables, who, then, is being tolerant? Ask yourself who are the real intolerant idiots in this case.

My theory is RaGa being he clown he is, no one took his rhetoric seriously. But the Cong manifesto with specific schemes is getting some traction. And Modi decided to discredit the entire document by linking it with RaGa/MMS comments and exaggerating for good effect.
Thinking about social media drama over last few days. Many Indians used to gripe that cricketers don’t take a stand on issues of public interest. Now that some of them took a stand many are again upset. Be careful what you wish for and don’t judge others acting in their interest.

I had to check on this since too many people keep repeating this ‘data’. Rajan joined as RBI Gov in middle of FY14 and left in middle of FY17. Every year he oversaw an increase in GDP growth! Clearly economy wasn’t tanking under his watch.
#India
is unique:
@RBI
Governors Raghu Ram Rajan & Urjit Patel produced the highest real rate in world & wondered why economy is tanking! Only a handful of us pointed this out repeatedly and asked for monetary policy easing, including monetary supply base (in my case).
Two things to note. One is that US financial power far outstrips its economic heft and may remain so for long. Two the US/European alliance is not just about common interests. It’s a quasi ethnic alliance and so will always be more cohesive than other alliances of convenience.
Too much nonsense being spouted about Ahmedabad crowd behaviour in the Ind-Pak game. Don’t see why sports fans are immune from mob psychology. Football fans chant worse things. Imo no way to predict or condition crowd behaviour but players should always be held to a higher std.
The article makes the error of assuming RBI wants lower yields. It’s likely RBI only wants stable yields. That’s why OMO/OT is being calibrated. This is an ad hoc form of yield curve control. From the actions one can surmise that RBI will do what it takes to peg 10Y around 6%.
Is the RBI making the good 'ol 'baby steps' mistake in announcing OMOs/OTs?
It might be. But equally with the outsized uncertainty, they may have no option.

Thomas Isaac on the delays in compensation cess and what it is doing to states.
Says the mechanism for any shortfalls in compensation cess is borrowings, which then adjusted repaid from future collections.

One of the stupidest narratives during the Emery reign was that Arsenal unearthed a gem in Guendouzi. He’s mediocre and shouldn’t be starting.

Reading about all the stuff surrounding Bangladesh ind celebrations I have a question. Why did India handle East Pakistan so differently from North Sri Lanka? Both were linguistic & religious conflicts involving ‘Indian’ diaspora. Would like to read some proper analysis on this.

Good article. But I don’t buy the argument that RBI’s job is difficult. In 2013 we faced dwindling reserves and high CAD. Now we have ample reserves and CAD arnd 1-2% of GDP in FY22. RBI should be able to maintain high level of monetary sovereignty under these conditions.
Sajjid Chinoy in his column 'Normalisation And Its Discontents'.
- US growth will outperform EMs
- This will be skewed towards non-tradables so EM upside will be limited.
- BUT normalisation of financial conditions will hit EMs square in the face.
Good explainer. The logical end point of Agri reforms is scaling down MSP procurement and scaling up income support aka PM Kisan. Procurement should be strictly limited to buffer stock norms. Also a flat income support per farmer will be massively redistributive.
Indiamerica reminds me of Chimerica neologism from 20 years back. Sadly world is a vastly different place from even 20 or 30 years ago. My hope for this relationship is continuous gains along a bumpy road. Too much hype can lead to disappointment.
If anyone is claiming today’s announcements constitute fiscal stimulus they are smoking the good stuff. Actual cash outlay is < 0.1% of GDP. What the Govt has done is credit facilitation which could potentially improve monetary transmission and credit growth.
This is ugly. Like a Mofussil bus terminus. Strange how a party/govt that is supposed to stand for cultural revival repeatedly makes unaesthetic choices.

It’s a ridiculous notion that sectors like textiles, leather & other light engg products need a PLI type scheme to expand and thrive. The problems in these sectors are about MSMEs scaling up, tax laws, regulatory burden & infra. These issues have to be addressed permanently.

Solid performance with the bat and ball in second innings by India. Rohit and Shardul set it up but really it was Bumrah who knocked out England. He was unplayable in that middle session. Champion stuff.
Ofc high CAD if it persists can constrain growth via policy choices made due to broader EM crisis. But bigger concerns for India are whether problems in its backyard will trigger a refugee crisis and reshape geopolitics in South Asia. Imo it’s an opportunity as well as a threat.
Ok here’s the thing. Cos won’t increase investments just becos profits are growing. They will do it when capacity constraints hit and if demand is strong. Now, with mfg capacity utilisation nearing prev highs and domestic demand outlook looking solid, investments should pick up.

What surprises me is how a Govt that was prominent, in your face and quick to react in 2020 has largely retreated in 2021 in face of a greater tragedy. A Govt that believes in centralisation and primacy of executive has ceded space to states and courts.
From a flailing State to a failed State. The“fiction” of India’s health system is exposed. National Government has abdicated from all responsibility. We need a coordinated response but center-states are at war. It's not too late, soon it will be.

Sad. But this is where govt shld have put their foot down, argued the case in higher courts and retained the exam. To me it looks like govt was happy to use this excuse to shut down the program.

Correct. Three separate but overlapping objectives: income support to farmers, low Volatility in food prices and supply of food grains to consumers in bottom 50%. Needs multiple tools to deliver these. Over reliance on MSP is a wasteful way of meeting these objectives.
Sorry this isn’t a valid criticism. Rail travel isn’t a basic necessity so passengers should be willing to spend money. The criticism should be about poor time keeping, overcrowding and poor maintenance of coaches and stations.
In the last four years Railways has earned an additional revenue of ₹ 5875 crore!
How you ask? By withdrawing concessions given to senior citizens of course. 🙏🏻
This is a good summary of evolving dynamics in India’s current account. The growth of GCC means India’s services exports has diversified and not over reliant on software exports by domestic cos. The article claims India’s services exports will be more than goods exports by FY25.
So in previous world cups they didn’t have faith? What about Iran,Saudi Arabia and Qatar? The flip side is when they lose you will claim bias and discrimination by referees. Way to spoil genuine enjoyment of a sport.
The way Morrocans are playing is only possible if you have faith! This team exudes faith . As a writer said faith in their mothers, grandmothers, coach & Allah. Boufal even brought his mother to the field after the victory over Portugal.(contd)
My take on budget. There were three big changes in budgeting. First, capex has been boosted massively by 0.6-0.8% of GDP in FY21-22 compared to previous steady state avg. Some of it is optical like loans to railways to cover losses and a buffer to address overruns.
You should log out of social media for a few days. And just check various foreign ministry websites once a day. Go retro in news consumption and that will help you get clarity. Else you will end up anointing Indian social media handles as official spokespersons.
Two imp takeaways here. Unemployment rises with edu qualification among the 15-24. Huge nos join humanities, science & commerce as opposed to technical streams in UP & Bihar. Both are related imo. Wonder if govts can nudge behaviour change by paying kids to acquire tech skill.

Think we have demand only for fresh vegetables. While in those markets it’s all stored items. Even with improved cold storage facilities here I think demand for fresh veg will be strong. Which invariably leads to wastage and so volatility in prices.

Two separate issues. We are an illiberal society so default response is to blame provocateur even if reaction is disproportionate. Second judiciary’s penchant for oral comments and sound bites during hearings. These get more prominence in media than actual written judgements.
