Some chickens are really coming home to roost right now. In diplomacy, in global competitiveness, and in domestic consumption.
The lack of attention on R&D + complacently assuming India is bound to gain from "China + 1" + the disdain for scientific work/temper which leads us to assume all technologies are available off the shelf will now exact its pound of flesh as we seek new markets.

Everything is interconnected. We cannot have concentration of capital + high energy costs + unregulated gig economy + underfunding of MSMEs + farm crisis + high fertiliser prices + more and then expect the domestic market to step in and replace the US consumer market.

For such calls to work, the government has to boost local purchasing power. As @Jayati1609 told me, “If we boosted India’s median income by 5%, we would have a much larger domestic market.” In other words, the govt has to address widening precarity. See:

Modi says: “The need of the hour is to take a resolve for building a strong India … I want our traders, shopkeepers to display boards for ‘Swadeshi’ products”. Comment comes days after Trump's tariffs sparked calls to boycott American goods in India.

And so, the question. How should India respond to Trump's 50% tariffs? As I learnt while working on this report, instead of rushing to renegotiate, we have to take the short-term hit and diversify trade beyond the USA. Trump's demands are too onerous to justify anything else.
On Independence Day, a new threat. "Trump is using tariffs not just to boost US manufacturers’ access to foreign markets, he is also forcing countries into trade agreements which, as with colonialism. are extractive and impinge on citizens’ wellbeing."

@carboncopyinfo And now that we are talking, the latest instalment of Energy Trends -- our weekly newsletter on energy, climate and India -- is out too. Much attention last week focused on Trump's 50% tariff. Our book pick, however, is a superb new history of the Aztecs.
