📢 We’re live at the @embojournal! 🌐 https://t.co/P5Jy0WiLJn Human telencephalic organoids cultured in the absence of Matrigel endogenously produce and self-organize the extracellular matrix, without affecting programs of neuronal differentiation. Led by @catarinacsmc 👩‍🔬 🧵 1/5

In total, this provides a new model for how big animals avoid cancer - maybe they’re just better at DNA repair than us? As a next step, I’d love to see this validated in an animal model - if you drive high expression of whale CIRBP in the mouse, are they cancer-resistant?

Excited to share our new work on direct protein-based genome editing in primary cells. We termed it Peptide-Assisted Genome Editing (PAGE) CRISPR-Cas platform. This platform allows rapid and effective editing of primary cells with minimal toxicity.

The reality of doing science is that most of the time you’re really just waiting for something unexpected to happen; something that doesn’t make sense or a wild new idea. When that happens, it’s up to you to change course and go for it, or let the hard-earned opportunity pass by.

Those of us who have survived in academia long enough have an obligation to make things better for the next generation. One concrete way to do that is to support grad students and postdocs in thinking independently and encouraging them to search for new scientific questions.
