Love hearing GenZs on podcasts. In one segment, the girl tells about the seriousness of her previous relationship by saying that she and her ex-bf even had a joint account. Took me entire 2 mins to realize that she meant an Instagram account of the couple, not a bank account.

Still limited to mostly the ‘international schools’ or where your family background plays a larger role in admissions. At more competitive schools, the cream mostly still doesn’t care about going abroad for undergrad.

It’s really easy to grow fast as a lender - you give people money, people like getting money.
The problem is when you don’t get it back!
Fast growing lenders often have bad underwriting- Cac looks better than competition bc comp is rejecting 90% of loans

Relocated back to India 1.5 years ago and I love living in Gurgaon. If one is able to live in a decent society somewhere on GCR, you have access to good restaurants, bars, and gyms, all within 5-10 min driving distance. (1/n)
Lived in Japan for 2.5 years, when I used to work at

The primary dispute is against hedge fund Redwood.
Byju’s said that Redwood has been buying its distressed debt "with the intent of making windfall gains."
Byju’s debt has been trading at 79 cents on the dollar.

Sneaker heads - what makes you buy/collect sneakers? Is it aspiration or is it style? I see some new D2C sneaker brands which are neither cheap nor expensive (INR 4-7k) and keep wondering if there’s a market for the same. Or are the 2 audience segments completely different?
@neilshroff
Hard disagree, cricket in India has still just scratched the surface. No vibe because of the nature of ODIs - zero close competitions in the last 10 matches played in this WC. There's a faster and more adrenaline-packed alternative now.

For most, NCR is the best metro in India to start a business. People rarely ask about product/design/user count/views; most just ask, "How much is finally coming home?"

Upload all expense/invoice receipts to Google Drive, by month. Name the receipts in each of them by date. Make one excel sheet in which all transactions are there by date, amount, and name. I do it once a month usually and doesn't take more than 3-4 hours of lazy work.
August 11th is Mountain Day in Japan (a national holiday), so here are a few pics of some well-known Japanese mountains to celebrate (top marks to anyone who can name them all) #山の日
Have been on both sides so have some perspective here. Used to think the exact same when I was a VC (5+ years). Now that I have been on the other side, here are the reasons I can imagine why someone would take the help of a banker: (1/n)
The # of pitches (at seed / pre-Series A) stage via ibankers is at an all time high. Led by mkt conditions, I suppose.
In general have seen banker inbounds as a -ve signal given it says something abt founder's fundraising prowess, an impt criterion. Think that is still true.
Truly! My first year's expenses (both personal and the company's) were funded by crypto gains, second by Adani. Sourcing ideas (serious) for similar such underpriced opportunities for the third year.
Met a founder friend bootstrapping his start-up. It's a difficult journey, being a solopreneur and dipping into your savings to build.
Something beautiful he told me is that he is able to fund it as his portfolio has done well. He saved and invested well. Investing is freedom.
Hi! My sister (25 yo lawyer) is relocating to Bengaluru for her new stint and is looking for a room in a nice furnished 2/3 BHK in or around Prestige Shantiniketan, Whitefield. Move-in date will be 1 Oct. Please RT/like, would really appreciate your help on this!
@BangaloreRoomi
@carolinecasson_
I think
@rabois
said it (or perhaps he quoted someone else) best - the job of a vc is to increase the founder’s odds of winning. Go with the one who can do that.
Between ordering food, groceries, and using Dineout while going out - still easily worth it. In fact, using Dineout even once or twice recovers the cost.
Anyone here who has scaled a page on Instagram (organically, not using ads) to 10/20k? We're starting to invest time and effort in content at
@miyagegifting
, and would love to learn more about how to think about it.
"If I were hiring for marketing and there was a kid who could take an Instagram page from 0 to 10k followers, that kid is awesome. Most CMOs don't know how to do this."
@thetanmay
Nuance to add here though is that the struggle of both generations doesn't have to be similar. The success of the parents should enable the kid(s) to dream bigger, be fearless, and aim higher.
Moved back to India in 2021, after living abroad (Japan & US) for 4.5 yrs. Part of the decision can be quantified imo - if you believe you & spouse are in the top 1/2% financially in India (subjective benchmark), think about moving back. If not, better standard of living abroad.
It just takes one trip back home for any NRI who - swayed by emotion & some patriotism - contemplates to move back to India. Just one trip to cancel any such thoughts.
Our eyes are usually numb to the squalor on the streets, but it’s super stark for someone who just came back.

Have heard countless such stories from female friends back when I was still living in the US. Most of them could easily come back to India, get any job they wanted, and lived a far more luxurious life than sharing an apartment with other people back in the US. (1/n)

Everyone is connected to their professional friends/acquaintances/bosses on LinkedIn, hence the good behaviour, because they know that their activity will be seen. On X, that's still not the case, hence the actual behaviour/thoughts.
@ravihanda
Roads are very wide and fairly limited traffic, unless you are driving in the 5 to 8 PM slot. Infra, within societies, is pretty good and you almost never have to worry about parking, water, or electricity. Houses too are large in size and nice wrt the rent one has to pay.

Moved back to India last year and am in the process of starting up in the B2B rewards and benefits space. Looking to get acquainted with folks working in HR in India who could have a look at the product we are building and give feedback.

Hard disagree with possibly everything here - 1) the challenge is what makes it gratifying, 2) if sales are going well, rest can be solved. no sales, rest is pointless 3) good salesmen/women are worth their weight in gold (disclaimer - as founder, I do b2b sales now every day)
1) despite their claiming to do so, most VCs don't reply. Understandable that this is a function of them getting loads of inbounds but for the founder, at the early stage (usually bootstrapped at that point) time is the most important currency (2/n)
If you haven't already, this is your cue to listen to one of the best rock bands to have come ever out of India,

Personally, I have never ever gone to an astrologer and don't intend to either. In India though, not only are astrologers supposed to predict the future but also act as therapists. Big stigma about seeking help from therapists but the same role is being played by astrologers.
🚨🆕 Zerodha FY23 financials - PAT = Rs 2,907 cr
Reported a 38.5 percent growth in revenue for the financial year 2022-23 at Rs 6,875 crore compared with the previous financial year.
It also reported a 39 percent growth in profits, which stood at Rs 2,907 crore in FY2
2) Fundraising is a full-time job and unless there are multiple co-founders, as a solo founder I would rather utilize my time in building product/distribution than cold emailing 100s of VCs (3/n)
One learns about the culture and people of a place mostly only when one lives there for a while (at the very least), and not just visits it for a few days. Otherwise, the 'number of countries visited' is largely a vanity metric and does not translate to one being 'cultured'.
After seeing 19 countries the novelty of traveling every 3 months has worn off. I prefer having a home base then taking 2-4 adventures a year.
Otherwise, just wanna work and enjoy my friends.
Any anecdotal reviews of
@GrowthX_Club
here? Looks interesting but don't have the luxury of attending sessions on weekends. Need something that allows me to watch/read/learn and consume content on my own timeline. Any good alternative/solution?
If one lives in NCR, a not-so-talked-about benefit about visiting Mumbai is that you see vintage cars masquerading as Kaali Peeli taxis. Had completely forgotten Santros existed.
@puneetiitm
Unlikely. Every other (mostly) social media platform goes viral by first onboarding the younger cohort (think Snapchat, TikTok, Insta, and even FB). LinkedIn works (and is hardest to replace) because the older cohort is there and they have negligible incentive to switch.
3) Another reason is that despite our thinking that everyone knows someone in the ecosystem or is aware of every term in the term sheet, most people don't. Having someone lead the process for them takes away the worry of trying to find a referral or mugging up deal terms (4/n)
@sarthakgh
@hey_yogini
Seems to have limited overlap with LinkedIn. A big reason for LinkedIn working is senior folks, across industries, are there on it and it is very hard to make them switch to another platform. (1/n)
@adadithya
100%. Used to (stupidly) do sprints (1 min each * 10 at 20 kph) years ago. Got grade 2 tears on both knees. Have been far away from it ever since. Even jogging will eventually take you there. Grass is the best.
