Why do writers tend to erase Bengalis from Partition stories? We are here. Listen to us. Remember our ancestors, too.

Boy is this true at Yale undergrad. Every man thought he would become president one day…

one of the main things about being an american guy is, no matter your profession or even your age as far as I can tell, you think there's a small chance that you'll become president one day

The film was more Raazi than Animal in humanizing the enemy. But, by the end, Dhurandhar works against itself by using hamfisted dialogue (including its final line). It expects its female characters to be mostly silent and ask no questions. These choices didn’t work for me.

The irony is that Dhurandhar has many of the elements that once made Bollywood work: a soundtrack longer than two songs, multiple meaty characters, and cinematic vision. That’s perhaps why so many screenings are consistently sold out.

But what has rankled critics are dialogue like, ā€œThis is a new India. It will enter your home and kill you, too.ā€ As they say, the best stories show, don’t tell. Once you have to articulate something so literally, you might have already lost.

That scene sets the stage for why India needs spies to infiltrate Pakistan, taking us on a years-long journey through the rival gangs of Karachi, much of it based on real-life people, such as Rehman Dakait.

The film opens on December 30, 1999, depicting its version of the real-life hijacking of an Indian plane forced to land in Kandahar, Afghanistan by a Pakistan-based terror group.

The film opens with a few lines from the Bhagavad Gita: ā€œRise, Arjuna, prepare yourself for battle.ā€ The battle the film centers? India’s ongoing fight against terrorists.

The 3.5-hour-long film is now in critics’ jail, many of whom believe it’s propaganda, while others have some complicated feelings because, well, it’s slickly produced with some great acting and a killer soundtrack. This tweet sums up these sentiments: https://t.co/2JhNoBpbXq

You probably already know the premise of Dhurandhar before you settle into your seat: an Indian spy (Ranveer Singh) with killer instincts who will fight, lie, and bleed to win.

Whatever you think of Dhurandhar, the soundtrack is a banger. The resurrection of so many old hits should be studied. Never expected to hear ā€œna to caravan ki talaash haiā€ — a deep cut for those who know

The Shawshank Redemption (1994) tanked in theaters & lost the Oscar then quietly became the film everybody calls a masterpiece. The studio feared the title, audiences couldn’t even remember it & now it’s the one film people recommend like a universal truth. https://t.co/Ei4WAWO5J8

Bridgewater Capital has a rule that if you’re caught talking about an employee in a disparaging way behind their back 3 times, you’re asked to leave the company. 3 strikes to break that bad habit. That’s their culture. I respect it.
