Director of The Wiener Holocaust Library
@wienerlibrary
. I love working with collections, studying history, learning about human rights and living in Greenwich.
If you’re somewhere you can have sound on, watch two new short films by the
@wienerlibrary
now. 1/An Audio Testimony is a powerful reimagining of the voices, objects and stories in our unique archive reminding us why Holocaust remembrance is so important.
Was proud to lead an informative tour of
@wienerlibrary
with the Mayor of London. Thank you
@sadiqkhan
for your solidarity following the antisemitic graffiti attack we experienced yesterday. We will work together to unite against hate.
Today I visited the historic Wiener Holocaust Library, the target of an unacceptable hate crime this week.
Support for a cause should never tip into abuse. Now more than ever, we must all reach for unity and understanding.
I am absolutely disgusted and shocked. The Library will be issuing a statement on Monday and redoubling its existing efforts to educate people about the Nazi genocide of the Roma. Resources
@wienerlibrary
including online exhibition
#ForgottenVictims
. This is not ok.
I don’t know what I should be more gutted or disgusted by here.. the kind of Racism that us GRT people are forced to live with every day.. that’s it’s still absolutely ok to demonise us & our demise as a joke…or the reactions of whooping & cheering from the audience..
To use ignorance as a weapon against an institution of learning is stupid and wrong. To lash out at Israel by targeting a Holocaust institution can only make sense to antisemites and their enablers. I hoped never to see this
@wienerlibrary
@Dannythefink
@CST_UK
Putin’s
#UkraineInvasion
is a war of aggression that uses distortion of history, and distortion of the Holocaust as a weapon. The
@wienerlibrary
utterly condemns this. My statement:
We condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine & the Holocaust distortion used to justify it. As Britain’s library of record of the Holocaust, we will refute the abuse of history esp. when used as a weapon of war. Statement by the Library's Director
@TSimpsonWHL
:
Remembering the victims of the Holocaust today. Thinking also about generations of researchers who helped uncover the crimes of the Nazis. So many amazing people have shed light on the past through hard work and commitment to truth.

1/3 Excited and honoured to share the news that from 7 October I will lead the amazing team
@wienerlibrary
as Director. Working for this extraordinary institution has always been a privilege.
We are excited to announce that the Library's new Director will be Dr Toby Simpson & we have adapted our name to The Wiener Holocaust Library. While our name has changed, our commitment to the study of genocide remains. Visit our website to find out more:
I have spent some time on
#HolocaustMemorialDay
looking at
@wienerlibrary
, I came across the story of Peter Gray, whose notebooks leapt out at me. This stunning shot was taken by famous photographer Helmut Newton,
1/2 Douglas Murray’s article ‘Why must Jews watch their backs’ claims to aid Jewish defence, but undermines the very foundations of that effort. Historical inaccuracies are one thing, but gross misrepresentations bordering on Holocaust distortion are another.
A very welcome development. Testament to the hard work of campaigners across the world and a victory for decency and common sense. Holocaust denial ought to have no place on social media platforms. I look forward to seeing this ban implemented.

Our Curators have been working hard to install our latest exhibition, a fascinating selection of over 100 powerful family photographs drawn from the collections of 12 German and Austrian Jewish families before 1939…
We are delighted to be partially reopening the Library today. The Reading Room will now open Tues - Fri, 11am-4pm, ONLY to those who have pre-booked. Our exhibition space remains closed until 17 May.
We look forward to seeing you soon! Info & booking:

I have lit a Yellow Candle in memory of Bertha Schönewald, born in 1884 in Krefeld, murdered at Sobibor in 1942. Her story, along with her daughter’s refugee story, was beautifully told by her grandson this evening at New London Synagogue.
We've been overwhelmed with messages of support over the last few days, and have received many generous donations.
We've launched a fundraiser to make it simpler for people to make a donation that will go directly to helping us care for our collections:
Horrified by the antisemitic graffiti in Hampstead. Currently visiting a friend in NJ where there has been an appalling string of attacks on the Jewish community. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and communities facing this threat. You are not alone.
Thank you everyone who has supported the Library in all kinds of ways this year. The team have given it their all and we’ve achieved so much with your help. Thank you!
The Library is now closed for Christmas, we will reopen on Tuesday 4 January 2022. We would like to wish all our friends and supporters a restful break and we look forward to welcoming you back in the New Year.
I’m horrified by the reports of antisemitic incidents and by the videos of the targeting of Jews with hate in London today. Sending solidarity and love to Jewish friends and colleagues.
Such a privilege to attend the unveiling of

photo collections on display at the memorial site and in the commemorative booklet which we will add to our collections. Congratulations to everyone who made this moving event possible.

I’m stunned and so sad to hear this news. Carol delivered fun, accessible informative training sessions to newcomer volunteers and staff at the Wiener for many years. I loved working with Carol whenever I had the chance and privilege to do so. I will miss her.
It is with great sadness that we share the news that Carol Hart MBE, our Head of Volunteer & Community Services, passed away today surrounded by her family. Carol will always be fondly remembered as a tireless advocate for the welfare of our members.

17 May 1941. Rudolf Hess taken to the Tower of London. When he first lands in the UK some imagine him a moderate seeking peace. My grandfather’s anti-Nazi archive, The Wiener Library, distributes evidence showing Hess is no moderate.

For the avoidance of any doubt I have seen the whole thing. Our statement will address Carr’s other comments as well as this clip. And no, the raising awareness argument doesn’t wash. 1. It is obvious that isn’t his sincere intent. 2. Hate speech isn’t something to propagate.
In response to the horrific and unprecedented terrorist attacks by Hamas in Israel I want to offer support to Jewish friends and colleagues today, knowing how frightening this must be. This is an unspeakable tragedy for countless innocent victims. Heartbreaking.
