As we emerge from Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish Calendar, we are appalled and saddened to learn of the attack at Heaton Park Synagogue this morning. Our thoughts are with the families of those who were killed, injured, and the entire Manchester Community.

This engraving, after an original by Bernard Picart in the 18th Century, shows the Shofar being blown in the Synagogue. Picart's works generally focussed on the Sephardi community of Amsterdam.

When the play premiered in New York in 1907, it was provocative and controversial, one Orthodox Yiddish newspaper attacked it for its portrayal of "unnatural love between women and women or men and men" despite the journalist not having seen the play themselves.
