I have been a board member of the BCCLA for over 10 years and, although I am acutely aware of the trauma experienced by Ottawa residents, I fully agree that the Emergencies Act is a dangerous tool that was not required.
BCCLA calls on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to revoke the use of the Emergencies Act. We additionally call on Members of Parliament to vote against the declaration when Parliament considers it within seven sitting days after its issuance. 1/12

The Court has just granted leave to amend the Convoy Class Action, with new defendants (eg, GiveSendGo) and a larger occupation zone. People who live, work or do business in this zone, incl on the other side of streets on the red lines, are part of the plaintiff classes.

Today the Court dismissed the 'Anti-SLAPP' motion by the defendants in the Convoy class action. Court found the plaintiffs have a "meritorious case" and there is evidence organizers intended to disrupt daily life in the city indefinitely thru extreme noise, blocking streets etc.

In the Convoy class action, our firm successfully resisted a motion by some organizers to access escrow funds to pay legal fees. We argued they are trustees at best and money isn’t theirs, and funds should be preserved to compensate people of Ottawa.
An Ontario Superior Court judge has rejected a request from Freedom Convoy organizers B.J. Dichter and Chris Garrah to release $200,000 of donated funds held in escrow to pay for their legal defence of the civil suit filed on behalf of Ottawa residents.

The Emergencies Act was unnecessary and the chaotic and unlawful Convoy protests in Ottawa could have been ended using other laws. I said that in Feb 2022 and it remains my view. But to be clear, this judgment is not the vindication that Convoy supporters believe it is.
Not sure convoy supporters celebrating this ruling have read it closely, the judge notes that if he was the government, he probably would have invoked it too.
He says the Freedom Convoy “went beyond legitimate protest and reflected an unacceptable breakdown of public order.”

and Jacob Wells. They’ve been served with the lawsuit in Delaware but didn’t appear in court. They keep thumbing their nose at Canadian courts. We’ll see how that works out…
In a comedy of errors, Wells unintentionally received $4.9mm in convoy donations into his personal bank account. He'd only lent his credentials to get the ball rolling. Now he actually possessed the funds. Think of the liability Wells had opened himself up to. 😬

Great take here on Federal Court judgment on EA. While different political factions may be claiming victory, the real winner is democracy because govt is being held to account by independent courts.
Court also confirmed Convoy was an illegitimate occupation of Ottawa.
A federal court just ruled Trudeau’s decision to invoke the Emergencies Act during the “Freedom Convoy” violated charter rights.
But anyone seeing this as a victory for the convoy is….really, really wrong.
Here’s why.

The Convoy protest in Ottawa was an occupation. As per this definition, the semi-trucks moved onto and took control of our streets in every way. It was Ottawa Police who called it an occupation and admitted they had no capacity to enforce the law throughout downtown Ottawa.

I agree with everything in this thread. Foreign interference is a problem and should be treated seriously rather than a torqued up political smear against one party. Motives of leakers is big concern.
I want to make something clear. I don't have a problem with the foreign interference story being reported. I have a problem with the ~way~ it's being reported.
