The cuts at Bell Media hit
@CTVNationalNews
hard this week. A thread about the some of the staff we lost. We keep hearing about the cost of news- I want you to hear about the value.
We’ve lost passionate journalists- who put their heart and soul into their work-
Ottawa residents have blocked dozens of Convoy vehicles from entering downtown. Their blockade started at 9 this morning..going on 6 hours. It is -21 C with the windchill. Don't see any propane tank heaters/ generators/or illegal bonfires keeping them warm
Just seeing this now- Drone footage of what’s being called the
#BattleofBillingsBridge
- named after the neighborhood where residents blocked Convoy participants from heading downtown .
They stood outside for 6+hours in temps that dipped below -20C!!
This is the strongest language I’ve heard yet from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Gaza: “Israel has a right to defend itself but the price of justice cannot come at the cost of ALL Palestinians.”
#cdnpoli
Ottawa Police say they've laid no charges.
@GetBAC
has an interesting point. The last time protestors without a permit shut down 1 intersection, police arrested 13 people after 36 hours. They were Indigenous and Black activists protesting police powers.
You do wonder why Ottawa police arrested 13 people who blocked one intersection in 2020 but have made no arrests this weekend when the entire downtown core is under siege, public health rules ignored, barricades removed, nazi flags etc.
A Canadian-Palestinian man documenting humanitarian efforts in Gaza during the Israel-Hamas war is missing. There are eyewitness reports saying he was taken by Israeli military forces.
The person who sent me this said this Ontario Provincial Police officer allowed protestors to use his vehicle like a “carnival ride” It happened Thursday around noon
Witnesses say before the police raid they saw a drone fly overhead surveilling them. Then dozens of officers came over the snow banks and surrounded them. Protestors prayed for police
Thread: As the occupation of downtown Ottawa ends, I want to share some info that didn’t make it in my official reporting. Much of my focus has been on the Coventry logistics camp.
1) because it’s relatively close to my home
2) I was intrigued after I saw this on my 1st visit
Freedom Convoy protestors are not winning hearts and minds as their social media leads you to believe. After more than 2 weeks of hands off approach by police and government - residents send a clear message “Go home” and protestors back off.
For me, there's something unsettling about the sight of a Black police chief being undone by a group of predominantly white men flouting laws.
A long thread on the tensions within the OPS that may shed light on what action is and isn't being taken.
Some truck convoy protestors seem stunned at this display of force, presence of carbine rifles. I will say I did not see police lay hands on anyone. No arrests here- just fuel seizure
A personal thread:
This is my last day reporting for CBC News. I am staying in journalism but leaving CBC Ottawa- a place I’ve called home for 20 years. So Im feeling a torrent of emotion - starting with an ache in my heart…
Breaking : CBC sources say Peter Sloly has resigned as Ottawa’s Police Chief and will publicly announce he is stepping aside after the Ottawa Police Services Board meeting today
Sources say while Peter Sloly wanted his offcrs to intercept fuel/jerrycans - OPP Command refused to follow through on what they considered an insignificant charge that would cause administrative headache. After that OPS officers refused to intercept too.
To sum it up:
Thousands more Convoy protestors expected this weekend.
Convoy being funded by American$
Counter protestors are also going to show
Ottawa Police can't handle this occupation on own
Mayor says need provincial and federal help
Military may need to be called in
And finally - I’ve heard of at least three spin-off camps. Embrun, Vankleek Hill and Greely all on private property. Not sure if police are going to move to dismantle. But I’m not sure a policy of out of sight, out of mind will work. There is dedication to the cause-30-
Trailers about to be pulled out of Coventry logistics camp. Still about 2 dozen vehicles left on the lot.
This is the best case scenario for police - just the threat of force /arrests has emptied out camp. They have set up on rural private property
Labour unions will counter protest in Ottawa this weekend. They’re angry at police response and appalled by the effectiveness of the far right in mobilizing discontent
4 yrs ago a 24yo woman came to me and
@iamSas
with her story. She was attacked on social media, but her allegations have now been tested in court. A jury has found
former Hedley frontman Jacob Hoggard guilty of sexual assault causing bodily harm.
Paul Champ, lawyer representing Ottawa residents and busiensses.
"On Jan 31, police already knew it was going to be an occupation. There were concerns that bylaw officers wouldn't be safe if they ticketed.. if officers aren't safe how could citziens be safe?"
The lawyer for Ottawa residents is frustrated that Freedom Convoy organizers given several days to testify, while citizens only given one.
@PaulChampLaw
now considering expanding $300M lawsuit beyond leaders to every trucker who occupied Ottawa
Travel hell for Via Rail passengers going between the Toronto to Quebec City corridor. This photo is from a viewer near Kingston.
9 trains stopped in tracks because of falling trees and power outages.
7 trains cancelled.
Some passengers have been stuck for more than 15 hrs
They let more trucks drive onto Wellington to drop supplies. Is this part of negotiation?
This is an illegal occupation - that
@ottawacity
@OttawaPolice
have permitted this from the start.
Update :
@ottawapolice
say they’ve arrested two people for mischief at Coventry protest camp. Seized multiple vehicles and the fuel.
I did not see the arrests.
Canada now says the cap of 1000 temporary visas for Palestinian relatives of Canadians trapped in Gaza is “flexible”.
Compare that to Ukraine where more than 900,000 temporary visas have been issued and more than 200,000 Ukrainians have arrived to escape Russia’s bombing. Watch:
Before this massive show of force, policing this occupation was costing $800,000 a day. That was before the huge influx of officers we’ve seen these past two days.
So on day 22- that’s at least $17.6 million dollars.
In the Parliament Bureau we lost

A group of Black teens are traumatized after Ottawa Police surround them with guns pointed. They were shooting a music video in the parking lot of a shopping mall.

This was an emotional day for Ottawa. Pain marching into the streets - but this was the most powerful. Praying for racial justice in front of the Prime Minister's Office.

For those wondering these are officers trained to maintain public order. And the large firearm you see held by officer on left is a riot/ crowd control device that launches tear gas/rubber projectiles.
Women fleeing domestic violence and are being retraumatized by the convoy protest. Cornerstone says they’re afraid to leave the shelter and while staff are having trouble getting to work, waiting for buses that don’t arrive.
A Deputy Minister of Canada writes an open letter about the racism he has experienced in and out of the halls of power.
It is unusual for a top public servant to speak so openly.

This quote from a Jewish woman at the London protest: “I grew up in the shadow of the Holocaust. We said ‘Never again.’ That means -never again- for anyone.”
Wow. This is London right now.
Even as the UK government threatens to crack down on pro-Palestine activists and protesters, the masses come out in support of Gaza 🇵🇸
If first major tactical error was allowing massive trucks into downtown Ottawa. Second mistake IMO was letting this camp flourish. In the past few weeks the rooms at the nearby Marriott and Hamptons Inn has been booked by hundreds of police (forces across Ontario/RCMP)
Things to investigate
1) Did OPS rank & file ignore orders to intercept fuel delivery
2) Were there internal leaks to protesters re: police actions and did that lead to compromised operations?
3) Why were 3 incident commanders relieved of responsibilities?
The list goes on…
My thanks to
@JLeiper
who put forward a motion at the Police Services Board to request that the Ontario Civilian Police Commission investigate the conduct of

police. Councillor
@cmckenney
made an inquiry and we spoke to this necessity today.

Then there are the extremists who are part of this protest. The Q-Anon conspiracy theorists, the people who fly Confederate flags and display Nazi symbols. We have to acknowledge that White privilege is driving this protest and a Black Police Chief may take the fall. -30-
This is not a secret. I would see police in the lobby, drive into parkade in evening. Staff would email me saying they were being harassed by anti-maskers but police wouldn’t intervene.
Thinking about this after seeing reporters in Canada endure abuse during convoy protests for the past few weeks.
In Ukraine where real freedom and democratic rights are at stake-journalists are valued.
I’ve been queuing inside this grocery store for more than an hour. When the locals found out I was a journalist, they started shouting at other people in the queue to let me go in front, alongside the soldiers and militants here. A deeply humbling moment, but I declined.
Brian Mulroney calls for bold social changes to prepare Canada for a world after COVID-19.
Including Indigenous self-government, basic universal income and doubling Canada's population through immigration.
Within the leadership group, there are two individuals that stand out that would have deep knowledge Ottawa's security strengths and weaknesses. One was on the Prime Minister's security detail, the other sat on Canada's national counter-terrorism unit.

Ottawa Police weren’t allowed inside the Coventry logistics central camp to hand out warning flyers about imminent arrests if protestors don’t leave. Here’s how it went down around 2pm.
“This is not illegitimate”
The man in the video is an Afghanistan veteran. After seeing how he was walking around -I wondered how much military expertise was involved. I was also getting sent names of anti-vax officers who were participating. That lead to this article
The counter protester barely flinches despite the truck horn blaring, a Canadian flag waving in his face, and being encircled by convoy supporters.

As police escalate their numbers in the downtown- they so far don’t have a presence at the supply camp on Coventry Rd- near the baseball stadium. There are families with children staying at this site. Thread on what’s there…
Our intrinsic value is more than that.
As TV news show fade to black & radio stations close- there will be fewer journalists telling the stories that help us understand each other and the world.
Fewer journalists to challenge and hold power to account - to cut through the spin.
This NY Times story is bringing back memories.
Please indulge me.
When I was 12, my dad bought a restaurant with his savings and loans. It was called Asia Gardens in Lethbridge, AB.
It sat 75 people.
He made the best ginger beef in town
Its clear police were monitoring the site but they only took real action two times. On Feb 6 when they raided and seized 3500+litres of fuel at supper time and when they moved in on remaining protesters yesterday
Every officer who pointed a gun should be filing a use of force report. Unless these kids were surrounded by the tactical unit..there should be a use of force report for every gun that was unholstered. This shouldn't be reported as one incident.

Perhaps we need to do a better job of explaining what we do.
How each person takes on multiple roles.
The amount of LIVE hits/ stories we file per day on TV and for digital.
You would be able to understand just how much we do.
Because we care that the public is informed
But this "siege" all began with what
@MichaelKempa1
calls a "grievous error" - allowing big rigs right up to the gates of Parliament Hill. It's a surprise given the attack on Parliament in 2014 and a truck ramming through Governor's General gates at Rideau Hall in July 2020

Hi Caryma-
I’m sorry about this.
I was out in the field today and didn’t get a chance to look over the super/chyron list before broadcast. We try to make sure we credit video we use. I’ll discuss with team to ensure we do better.
Here is more reporting on investigations into active soldiers who may be involved in protest .
But locals were also donating supplies, food/ generators/ toys, tents. There was a list of people opening their homes up for protesters to take shower

I’m not sure if the two are linked
Trucks drive in drop off fuel/ food. The supplies are separated into smaller loads and transported downtown in smaller vehicles. Today the supply chain hummed along. There was no police preventing it.
Many demonstrating have family trapped in Gaza.
They want a ceasefire because it offers hope the lives of their children, grandchildren, siblings & loved ones won’t end in airstrikes & artillery fire.

These are Ottawa residents preventing a long row of Convoy protestors from driving to downtown to participate in the occupation. Agitators within the Convoy group - have called on truckers to head to the intersection to confront the residents.
The Ottawa residents blockade of convoy protestors heading into downtown is into its third hour. Many of them were going west on Riverside from their main logistics camp at the RCGT baseball stadium on Coventry Rd.
