Age 14 at the roller rink with friends. Dad came to pick me up, saw me sitting next to a black male friend. On the ride home dad was steaming. When we got home, he threw me up against a wall, told me he was sending me to live with my mother. Dad got over it, but I never forgot.

Once when my son was about 7 or 8 I encouraged him to open a door for an elderly woman. She thanked him and he was so pleased with himself that from then on he always opened doors for people. Kids respond to positive reinforcement.
