All solidarity to
@AngelaRayner
. Ridiculous to even think about printing that nonsense.
Since women were elected to the Commons 100 years ago we have been undermined, belittled, and objectified.
I think it is supposed to put us off. Of course it has the opposite effect.
Aside from spreadsheets jokes, seriously, this is what happens when you go after flashy apps and shiny private sector contracts. Rather than the boring but necessary work of recruiting enough competent civil servants to do the data quality assurance.
Two women a week are killed by a partner or ex-partner. And people are debating whether someone should call the police, whether someone should record it, whether someone should tell people.
This is all about power. Don't tell me it isn't.
The Prime Minister's meeting today is taking place just a few miles from Vauxhall Motors, Ellesmere Port and Airbus at Broughton. He should take a few minutes whilst he is here to explain to those who work there why he has put their livelihoods at risk with his No Deal
#Brexit
.
So when a Tory Prime Minister calls a general election in the middle of Brexit negotiations, that's in the national interest, but when the Labour party thinks that we need one, that's party politicking. Glad we've cleared that up.
Another day, another interview request from
@BBCNews
which I agree to, and they then pull out of because they won't film national politics outside London. The rest of the country exists
@BBC
. We exist.
Hey
@BorisJohnson
- show us the maths. If you think we'll be better off with your kind of trade, model it.
If we have nothing to worry about in leaving the EU, you'll have no qualms describing it numerically so we can all see your workings out.
Otherwise...you're bluffing, pal.
Thank you
@Keir_Starmer
for asking me to lead for
@UKLabour
on sport. No more important time than during this current crisis. Cannot wait to get started.
Labour comes out in favour of keeping free movement - an utter betrayal of traditional working-class people, the majority of whom oppose it and voted to end it in the referendum. The party will pay a heavy, but deserved, price for this at the ballot box.
Small reminder. If we weren't being suspended and sent away, we could be cancelling the conference recess given the
#Brexit
deadline. So anyone who says this is normal has got it wrong.
“What an absolute load of rubbish... Did anyone else’s friends get contracts?”
Watch
@JessPhillips
and
@MattHancock
disagree over the handling of PPE contracts during the pandemic.
#Peston
After leaving the NHS on its knees and making Britain sicker, the Tories have decided to...blame the doctors.
This country is crying out for a general election.
I asked out new Prime Minister if he would stick to his promises on the border with Ireland, and no sudden change to our economy. He said it is in the hands of partners in Europe. Always someone else's fault. He's not full of optimism, he's full of sh*t.
#brexit
With current events, anyone else up for a bit more

spirit? I think about our friend Jo everyday. I see her coat of arms in the Commons Chamber. I try to think about positive things I can do to bring people together. Who is with me?

Message to all who would lead Labour. Define yourself by what you believe, not what you reject in others. Find what is good about progressive politics, and show us how you would win over the sceptic. I don't care what you think about the past. I want to win our country's future.
Message to British young people. If you are dismayed by current events and wonder why politics is damaging our country's future, please get involved. Join a party, become an activist, whatever. But please don't give up. It doesn't have to be like this. 🇬🇧❤
On nights like this you realise politics matters. Not just the tv shows, or the papers, but the hard organisation. Every MP's vote absolutely mattered tonight.
It all feels so grim and difficult now, but sometimes the best you can do is stop bad things happening.
#Brexit
The House of Commons has approved the third reading of the
#EUWithdrawal5Bill
by 313 votes to 312.
This means the Bill has completed its Commons stages and passes over to the
@UKHouseofLords
for further scrutiny.
On
#Brexit
. It may be okay to take an irrational decision for yourself. But it's not okay to take an irrational decision on behalf of others. We owe our country better than that.
Still bizarre to think that in the face of stress for millions facing winter, Boris Johnson refused to recall Parliament.
Whatever
@trussliz
cobbles together tomorrow, it's too late to save people the weeks of fear they've already had.
When I was growing up, if something good happened - not political - anything good - my Dad would describe it as a 'Labour Gain'.
Can never turn my back on the fight to see
@UKLabour
win.
The madness of
#austerity
, & how
#Brexit
turned out makes it all the more important.
In case anyone is wondering, this is happening whilst child poverty rises, food bank use increases exponentially, and destitution all around us. Because it turns out that if you dismantle social security & public services, even increasing the legal minimum wage won't save you.
Proud that the Living Wage will go up AGAIN in April - increasing the biggest pay rise in history for the lowest paid. A fine One Nation Conservative achievement
If someone told my 25 year old self who never played football (but always wanted to) that when I was 38 I would fly to Lyon and break a world record with these beauties at the home of

Clause 30 of the EU (Withdrawal Agreement) Bill. What happens if the Government doesn’t propose an extension? Parliament would have no say and we would exit the transition period on the 31 Dec 2020 even if a trade agreement hadn’t been reached by then with the EU; ie no deal.
A number of constituents have been in touch about the points deduction handed to Everton Football Club by the Premier League.
For years, we've called for an independent football regulator - to manage the game properly.
You can see my question here.
Just been for a socially-distanced run. Saw 2 nurses getting into a car. As I stopped, we recognised each other. They cared for my Nanna Audrey before she died 9 years ago. I wanted to thank them for all they are doing now. They had an important message. Please help me share >>
Being re-elected for the place that raised me for the fourth time is humbling. I owe my constituents everything. But it is bittersweet. My fight for our home just got a whole lot harder. Devastated for Labour colleagues elsewhere, and all the communities they represent.
Whack-a-mole gone wrong. They say they want to work with us but send out meeting invites minutes before the start. Test results still taking days not hours. Tracing failure despite massive contracts handed out. Merseyside paying the price.
None of this inevitable.
#incompetence
Absolute state of this. Recessions are caused by economic *shocks*. Outside the business cycle, they are unforeseen. Problem with No Deal is not that it is a shock. It is that the Tories are choosing a permanent, significant downgrade to the economy, with massive consequences.
Nurses don't just work in hospitals. They work in care homes, and in the community, looking after people in their homes. If we only secure PPE and testing for hospital nurses we will miss a huge group of people absolutely crucial to fighting
#COVID19
No. It is due to the location of testing centres - they are too far. Plus lack of private transport because having a car is expensive if you are a care worker or cleaner on minimum wage. If he actually listened he would know this.
Hancock says capacity for testing is up to 51k, but not as many people came forward as they thought would 🤔
"It's a good problem to have" though, he says, as govt has been able to expand testing
The SNP's
@joannaccherry
is making an excellent speech in support of her cross-party motion, which is a safe-guard against the horrors of a no deal
#Brexit
. I will vote for that, along with tolerable suggestions on
#Brexit
, and for a confirmatory public ballot.
But the best piece of advice he gave me was this. And I am leaving it here for all newly elected MPs:
Never use a word in the House of Commons you wouldn't say to someone who lives in your street.
Follow Dennis' advice, you won't go far wrong.
According to
@SamCoatesSky
...
In a handwritten note backing proroguing parliament, Boris Johnson blamed "girly swot Cameron" for having the September session of parliament.
Cameron's book comes out very soon...
To my constituents who have taken the time to write, to call, to pop into the office and offer support, whether or not they agree with me:
You have no idea how much that matters. Thank you very very much. Ax
Honestly
@kimleadbeater
is the bravest of the brave. The very very best of all of us.
People telling me they had already voted for her (by post) this week was so uplifting. She would be a phenomenal voice for Batley and Spen.
Do not give in and do not give up

Have been reminded that today is the anniversary of my first speech in the Commons, ten years ago. If someone had told me then what the next ten years would hold...
When this contest started, I told Labour Party members that I had been representing my hometown in Parliament for 13 years, and I wanted to continue to do so.
Thank you scientists working round the clock. Thank you all those who trialled. Thank you everyone dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge in order to protect others.

There is a very good reason why what we need is a proper working social security system for families and not reliance on food parcels and food banks.
#ENDCHILDFOODPOVERTY
Why
@MattHancock
was wrong about footballers. And why no town should lose its sports club because of
#COVID19
- we have to start talking about this now >>>
I offered to answer the question. I answered. If I was uncomfortable it was because of you legitimising the nonsense that passes for newspaper front pages today.
But you know, keep having a go at me Piers. At this point, I'm taking it as a badge of honour.
Truth is,
@theresa_may
could have built consensus on Brexit. But she chose a general election. Thought she could get a massive majority & do as she liked.
But the British people intervened in June, & if the PM won't listen, Parliament has a duty to ensure people are heard 🇬🇧
Women - and supporters of women's sport - have as much right to a

as men. We can't just bin women's football this season without a plan. Turns out that 50 year ban is still having an impact on women's chances ⚽️⚽️⚽️
Westminster tube just now. Busker playing Bob Marley. Whole school class of visiting kids stops to dance and sing along. Not everything in life is so bad.
For 13 years, I have represented my hometown.
I am determined to keep fighting for what matters, and what matters to me is the Wirral.
That's why I am asking for your support to become the candidate for the new, bigger Birkenhead constituency
Ten years ago tonight. Polls closed and I had headed home *certain* to lose. Thank you everyone in Wirral South. You have taught me so much. But most of all, never give up.
Shadow Minister For Sport
@Alison_McGovern
opens up about her personal demons - and says inclusive sport is key to stop future generations hiding their bodies in fear of shame
Some good news to start the week.
From next year, as we take control of our buses, we will:
▪️cap adult fares at £2
▪️cap child fares at £1
The era of people paying £4 or more for a single journey is coming to an end.
Look out for more details later.
#NewEraGM
If the Prime Minister wishes, I will explain to him in person why his language is so wrong and so difficult bearing in mind the grief that so many of us feel & the threats to our colleagues
@BorisJohnson
I think what we have discovered in response to
@bbclaurak
and
@BethRigby
is that
@BorisJohnson
is not so keen to take responsibility for his decisions.
Who knew.
Liverpool fans were heroes, actually. So many people acted to take care of each other in a very stressful situation. Now we need a full apology from the French authorities, and a proper inquiry. Policing by consent matters. Not just for football fans but for everyone, everywhere.
Liverpool fans were not to blame for what happened at the Champions League final. It is irrefutable now, in the form of the French senate findings.
The authorities and politicians are rightly slammed for their failures and lies.
Please read and share.
