Holding Life Together: chaplaincy, psychology, pastoral supervision. No to Assisted Dying: Yes to Suicide Prevention. AMDG & Deo Gratias
Surrey/Sussex
Joined May 2011
Often after someone interacts with a Chaplain they're surprised and say - I didn't know you did that. It may be because we gave them all the time they needed, we listened without judging or interrupting, we hugged them, we gave them a moment's peace when neither said anything ...

I am so glad I listen to @BBCRadio4 (sometimes). I have learned two new words this week - abstruse and envenomed. I admit I looked up both to check they were real! Now waiting for the perfect moment to include them in conversation ...

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who wake, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, give rest to the weary, sustain the dying, calm the suffering, and pity the distressed; all for your love's sake, O Christ our Redeemer. Amen

Ditto any leaders, I think. Don't pretend to be a superhero - your story is more admirable if you tell it with the downs as well as ups, failures as well as successes.
When religious leaders share times they were in a dark place, felt depressed, or lost faith, that is transformative: it tells the listener that if someone they admire went through that and made it out, then that darkness is no reason to feel bad about themself or to lose hope.

Two years ago, on 7 October 2023, the world shifted. The grief that began that day has crossed borders and generations. And yet, even in the shadow of such pain, we turn to words that have carried our people: “I lift up my eyes to the mountains, from where will my help come?”

Tonight's harvest moon is the first full moon after the autumnal equinox - the Winterfylleð moon, which in the old Anglo-Saxon calendar was the herald of winter.
It's October, the month with perhaps the most evocative name in the Anglo-Saxon calendar: in Old English it was called 'Winterfylleð', because (Bede says) the full moon of this month marked the beginning of winter.

And on that note I will once again remind everyone that if you know someone in hospital, make being at the hospital your priority. Witnesses matter. People with visitors are humanized & have added layer of protection.
