Today I am thinking about the healthcare professional who sat beside my hospital bed & tried to convince me to sign a DNR shortly after I found out my partner of 6 years was leaving town forever rendering me homeless & alone. This was before MAID was legal let alone expanded. 🧵

Hey everyone this is not a good news story. It’s not inspiring. It’s not a way for you to feel better about life. This is what happens when cities design discrimination. Elevators break, need maintenance. There should never just be one.

It's a homemade wheelchair not a toy. All the kids - HS robotics students & 2-year-old - as well as parents are great. But PLEASE remember this happened because parent's insurance would not cover cost of his wheelchair so he asked his old school- which not every family can do.

That wheelchair was worth thousands of dollars. It would have been customized - measured to one person. Replacing it will take time, money and in the interim they'll be forced to use an unsuitable, possibly painful wheelchair. And the crushing feeling of knowing no one cared.

Saying this gently and with care and understanding. Sincerely. But people with Long COVID are not the first people to incur illness and become disabled as a result of failure of policy and state negligence. Also not the first disabled people to not be believed.

A disabled woman died during a power outage in NY last year. She had worried about dying this way and had asked to be allowed a back-up generator but it was prohibited because she lived in apt building. Answers look simple when you don't have a clue what you're talking about.

My point is you don't have to believe the other side is full of bad people. You don't have to make any assessment about them or their possible motives. You just have to decide to believe disabled people who are sharing their experiences of harm. That's a place to start.

Non-disabled people are making believing disabled people conditional on us explaining these people’s motivations rather than treating our knowledge & experience as reason enough. Causal is likely multiple but it’s not relevant to deciding to believe MAiD poses threat to crips.

Dearest landlord reply guys. 619 people died in one week in this province BECAUSE their landlords didn’t provide mechanical cooling. No one has time or patience for your bullshit excuses about blocking tenants from installing a/c.

One time the person who was bagging items said he was too busy to help me - I mean I think she might have literally pulled him by the ear. And you know, the thing is she was basically training everyone by example because it started to change after awhile in that store.

the only poor people you notice exist are poor people 'in your way' - poor people living in public space. as a result the govt knows it doesn't need to end poverty, just eliminate poor people from public space/view. this is how you contribute to criminalization of poverty

According to the number of articles in my Google alerts, the right wing media is currently losing its entire shit over a NIU physics professor who applied scientific research to reality and came up with an equitable policy. Alt text wouldn't all fit so cont'd in next tweet.

I do want you to put this in perspective. It is happening to disabled people all over. This is what your "re-opening" and "returning to normal" means. Our accessibility is being stripped away and we are being pushed out of society. This is structural ableism. This is a choice.

random city planning point. None of the proposed wider sidewalks are ever wide enough imo and here's why: 1) Sidewalks should not be treated like lanes of traffic - for "commuting" - there should be space to stop & socialize, move in large groups; 2) street vendors - I want those

And so it came to pass that disabled poor people living on the unceded land known as Vancouver, having been denied air conditioners due to "environmental concerns" went to the beach to cool off but the water was filled with the shit of passengers from giant air conditioned ships

I'm not giving up - ever - on the fight for air conditioner funding for disabled poor people, but in meantime, let's make a thread of some of things that can help (to some degree). I'll start. There is nothing I won't put in fridge or freezer - socks, bandanas, sheets...

This is a white disabled man using ableism as a weapon in service of racism. It's wrong to discuss this as usual inspiration porn which is often unintentional harm towards disabled people. Here hate is motivator. He's weaponizing abled emotions to promote anti-Black racism
