A foster kid arrived on the last Friday of the summer holiday, He started a new school on the Monday. At the end of the day as kids ran into the arms of their parents, he whispered to his teacher “I know that man”. I was that man. I was a stranger, but the only stranger he knew.
This Mum adopted this son. She has cancer, diabetes and an indomitable spirit. This son has additional needs, eats everything in sight, and loves his Mum. Follow their story on Race Across the World BBC2. It’s beautiful

Our Dad died yesterday.
He suffered a heart attack whilst pottering in his beloved back garden.
He’ll be gutted to have missed the T20 Final and QPR’s possible promotion to The Premier League, but if a man could have chosen how and where, this would have been it
@QPR
Many kids will be anxious about school. It may be terrifying for kids in our care system. Sewing kisses into their sleeve is a visual reminder that they will not be forgotten and will be collected at home time. 😘to all foster carers and adopters

My mate Dave runs Madlug. Madlug sell bags. For every bag they sell, Madlug gives another bag to a Kid in Care. Madlug have given 1000 bags to Liverpool City Council. No kid should carry their life in a bin bag.

This kid was dropped off at our house 12 years ago.
We hadn’t got a clue what we were doing.
And quite often, we still don’t.
But he loves us and we love him.
Everything else is just details

7 years ago, the little kid in this photo got into his social worker’s car with the last of his belongings, and went to live with his adopting family. We waved, we closed the front door, and we all burst into tears. If the price of a kid having a home is our tears, we’ll pay it.
I’ve taught just about 1000 kids at GCSE over 25 years.
Some results would suggest I’m an incredible teacher and you should deffo be in my class.
Quite often, the polar opposite is true.
Kids aren’t data.

My childhood was challenging.
I was in care.
A teacher with the nickname of Streaky Bacon took us sailing…and that changed everything…
Big love to all the teachers, regardless of nickname, who make a difference.

The little fella in the middle looks just like any other kid off for a walk with his Grandparents. He had just turned 4. He’d been in Foster Care for about 6 months. He’d just learnt to trust my Mum and Dad. It takes a village to raise a child.
Our Dad died whilst planting his pansies back in November.
5 months later, they have begun to flower.
This has delighted my heart.
There’s always hope.

9 years ago a Social Worker dropped a 6 year old off at our house.
We fostered him on a ‘short-term basis’.
A year later, we changed that status to ‘long-term’.
A few years later he drew himself onto a family photo.
We adopted him.

You get paid to foster and you get an allowance to buy stuff that a kid might need. We follow the principle that if it’s good enough for our birth kids, it’s good enough for a foster kid. In Liverpool, Foster Carers don’t pay Council Tax. I hate shopping

Me: I hope so

There are 1450 kids in care in Liverpool. None of us can look after all of them, but some of us can look after one of them. ‘I made a difference to that one’!

John’s Dad abandoned him and his Mum had significant mental health issues. His Auntie Mimi stepped in and provided a home and security. For kids with no Auntie Mimi, there’s mainstream foster care. Happy birthday John

Anedote:
Last night I danced with several thousand mask free strangers.
We all had to have a Negative Covid Test to gain entry. Within seconds I felt completely comfortable dancing, leaping and cavorting. I will do another test to see if I got Covid at the gig.

This is the proud look of a man whose son has made a friend, hatched a reasonable plan to meet said friend, and successfully gone off to meet that friend, and done this all on his own.

I’ve put a chair on the pavement and set up a ‘socially distanced’ foster drop in on the street. FaceTime/tweet me/call me, and we can have a chat! Fostering never stops!
One Monday morning a 10 yr old said bye to his Mum and went to school. That day his Mum got ill and was hospitalised. Social workers got him from school and dropped him at ours at 4pm. He stayed for 6 months. Strangers are welcome here.

The man is my Dad, the woman is my Mum, and the little boy is a foster kid. It takes a family within a community to raise a child. This kid’s family had some problems so we lent him ours.

I love ‘first day’ back to school photos.
Foster kids can’t generally be on social media.
It’s another rite of passage that they miss out on.
When we adopted Super K, one of the things he was looking forward to was ‘being on Facebook like normal people’
My wife organised a date night for us in 2010. She took me to a Community Centre to learn about fostering. It was one of the most significant nights out we’ve ever had, and led to us having several more children!

This young man leaves for Uni tomorrow. I’ve been thinking about his annoying habits so as not to miss him too much
1. Robs my beer
2. Confuses ‘near the bin’ with ‘in the bin‘
3. Leaves massive trainers everywhere
4. Thinks towels dry on the floor
6. Beats me at golf
Dropped a kid at Uni?
1. Go home and have a cry
a cheap holiday
3. Marvel at the tidiness of your home and reduced laundry pile
4. Hear from them, and transfer the required £££
5. Consider using your extra room for Respite Fostering
