I am very sorry to announce that Nigel has died.
He slipped quietly away with no pain or suffering and is now buried in the garden with lots of tennis balls.

I am afraid to tell you that my dear, lovely Nell died last night. She was diagnosed with cancer in June ( which is why she barely appeared on tv) and went rapidly downhill in the past few weeks. She is buried in the garden next to Nigel.

Thanks to all that have sent so many lovely and kind messages about Nigel. It has meant a great deal. I have posted many more pictures of him on my website .
He is now in the garden and of the garden and we will celebrate his good life by living well.

Last night Nellie had a very near miss. Chasing a stick, she impaled herself on it and speared her throat, missing two arteries by millimetres.
Thanks to our brilliant vet, working at night, she is fine- if very sorry for herself. So please DONT THROW STICKS FOR DOGS.

I worked for Channel Four at the end of the nineties and early noughties and we made superb gardening programmes I am very proud to have been part of. It should be treasured for what it is, not flogged off unnecessarily.

Nigel had surgery yesterday to remove some growths from his mouth. It all went well, he is fine - if a bit sore - will have a quiet weekend and be ready for filming next week. He will, of course, play the starring role in tonight’s GW.

I see that many people complain that peat-free composts are not as good as peat based ones. I have not used peat in a growing medium for over 25 years and have never had any problems at all. Some are better than others but ALL are better than using peat!

the Victoria Medal of Honour presented to me by the Royal Horticultural Society at Chelsea today. I also gave the address at the President’s lunch. Later I met and chatted to her Majesty the Queen. Oh and I filmed all day for tonight’s programme at 8 pm on bbc2. Quite a day!

This is my mother holding my twin sister Alison and I on the day of our Christening, in October 1955.
She died in 1989, but today would have been her 100th birthday.

Just received two lovely English roses - 'Hyde Hall' and 'Wisley 2008' as a memorial to Nigel. Wonderful. I shall plant them with care and love and they will flower for many years to come.

Some gardeners are missing the point: It really doesnt matter how well plants in your garden grow or do not grow, no plants or garden justify the use of peat. Ever. We must therefore adapt- even if that means a loss of quality (which I firmly believe is not the case)

Just had the green light for two new series for the BBC - one on Spanish gardens next year and another biggie on UK gardens, to be filmed across next two years - alongside GW of course. Same team that made Adriatic, Japanese, American, French, Paradise etc. Very exciting.
