Let me add this is not some crazy oddity that *never* happens:
I didn’t get accepted to the Applied Econ PhD program at Cornell, I am a professor in the same department now.

“Talent is universal, while opportunity is not.” Besides chess champions, how many great doctors, scientists, teachers, inventors are we losing to inequality?
Economics is an easy target: policy makers (sort of) listen, pay is good (by academic standards) and some economists are fairly nasty. This is to thank the many who are not and work to improve the life of others. They don’t make a fuss but they are there, seek them out!
The day after my 20th bday I went to Rotterdam with the Erasmus program. I learnt to live without pasta and made friends for life. Most importantly, it opened doors to worlds i didn’t know existed. Generations of UK students will never see that door

Roger Myerson, Nobel Laureate, in grad school had his '74 paper on proper equilibrium *desk rejected* at Int'l Journal of Game Theory. That's the idea for which R Selten later got the Nobel. Then Myerson went on to win the prize for another idea.
PhD students: Don't give up.
The prize was one amazing surprise but the kind words that students, colleagues and friends took the time to write are the true prize. Thanks to all the (non dismal) economists out there!

Do you think pre-docs help diversify the pool of PhD students or are they another barrier? Does the tenure clock penalise women? If you want to answer please apply a new initiative for economists to make economics better.
A giant of economics, devoted policy advisor, and, rarest of all, kind to everyone, from his fellow rockstar economists to an unknown girl from a small department with big dreams and not much sense...
Thank you, Alan, for making the world a better place.
Alan Krueger brought economics to life for me
His work inspired me to become an economist
He was not just brilliant, but kind
He engaged deeply with public policy

a wonderful piece to remind us that while it is true that our findings are yet to be perfected, we have a moral obligation to share them with policy because the alternative ‘research’ that informs the debate is sponsored by those who can afford to pay
