With a heavy heart, I have resigned from the EAC this morning. The circumstances in which Atif was asked to step down are ones I profoundly disagree with. Basing decisions on religious affiliation goes against my principles, or the values I am trying to teach my children. (1/5)
My dad came to the UK in the 1960s, aged 15, alone. My parents settled in London in the early 70s & together made many hard choices to give their kids a better chance in life. My sincerest wish is the UK remains an open, tolerant society for those in need. It makes us all better.
We're delighted that three Fellows of the British Academy, Professor Sarah Worthington, Professor

and Professor
@ImranRasul3
, have been recognised in the
#QueensBirthdayHonours
list for their contribution to the humanities and social sciences:
Truth be told, if there was one academic on the EAC that Pakistan needs, it was
@AtifRMian
. Resolving the macro and fiscal mess the country is in will lay the bedrock for social protection, poverty alleviation policies and other economic reforms the country also needs. (3/5)
I wish the government and EAC luck in their future work, and remain willing to offer non-partisan, evidence based advice that can help improve economic policy making in the country. (5/5)
Pakistan is full of talent: I have seen this in the students/academics/orgs/NGOs/civil servants I have been lucky to work with. It needs leaders willing to draw on all this talent, and that are willing to appeal to our better sides, for the common good and not sow division. (4/5)
The establishment of the EAC and its members offered a great opportunity for better economic policy. Events these past 10 days have shown the best and worst of Pakistani politics at the moment. (2/5)
Honored to be asked to serve on the Economic Advisory Council in Pakistan, alongside
@aikhwaja
@AtifRMian
and others. A window of opportunity to improve economic performance and circumstances for the country.
@CERPakistan
@igc
A great pleasure taking my parents to Buck Pal. Their journey: gambling on international migration in the 60s, working multiple jobs, overcoming discrimination to see their kids become an engineer, doctor, teacher (+me!). Now FT grandparents to 8. Economic opportunities matter.🙏🏽
Our paper on training is now forthcoming in Econometrica.
Compares returns to vocational vs on-the-job training over 4 yrs, combining RCT+structural model.
Potential implications for COVID-recovery in LICs.

In 2020 we began an initiative

asking authors to submit teaching materials for their accepted articles - these are open access.
As we now have quite a catalogue, we made the teaching materials page searchable by JEL code and issue number.
Enjoy!
It is so nice to be recognised this way. It gives me a chance to thank countless others who have helped me in life, by teaching me, working with me, pushing me to do better, setting examples on how economics can be used for good, and inspiring me through their curiosity.🙏

Extremely disappointed to hear this news, will be very hard to replace Atif. Pakistan needs to draw on all of its talent, based on knowledge and ability, and not irrelevant factors. I wait to see whether the idea of the EAC can live up to its promise.
I know 16 is nothing special, but after the last 16 months it feels special.
@orianabandiera

Five things I learned after wk1 of lockdown:

3. School age kids: productivity slowdown
4. Pre-school kids: good luck
5. Devo economists: will finally analyse all the data from earlier field projects.
We recently started an initiative

asking authors of accepted papers to also send teaching slides for their work. These are all now posted in one place on the

Hope they are useful for those preparing to teach econ in 2021!
17 years and one day ago, I was lucky enough to marry

Economists travel a lot for work (I’m as guilty as anyone). Given individl incentives/career concerns (seminars etc.) is there a way we can coordinate to collectively reduce travel norm in the 2020s (not just offsets)?
Have other (enviro minded) disciplines solved this problem?
By front loading incentives, the tenure system disadvantages women. Just not fit for purpose in the 21st century. An applied theory problem: how to design a gender neutral tenure system. I think this paper by
@PMoserEcon
puts the issues into sharp focus.
1/3) Tenure dilemma: The tenure clock hasn't changed despite the fact that drafts have become longer and the acceptance rate in top journals has fallen. You are expected to do free service in the form of ref reports, organize conferences and do discussions on top of your teaching
It's really nice to be elected, even nicer being elected at the same time as Aureo. If we gave recognition to places not people, then
@EconUCL

would be right at the top. A culture created where seniors to juniors work collaboratively to do research for the common good.

I always thought the economist as doctor analogy most apt.
We diagnose symptoms/forces, not exact timing of heart attack/recession
Patient is constantly evolving: past remedies might not work today
Beset by unscientific quack fringe, but public often can’t distinguish.
Economics is useless because:
a. did not predict financial crisis
b. ignores environment/altruism/culture..
c. male dominated
d. too abstract/mathy
If you agree with any of the above, but have an open mind and are willing to listen to evidence and facts then you need to..(1/3)
I worry that in a world of online conferences, younger scholars have fewer opps to present, crowded out by everyone chasing big names.
So, should double blind reviewing be the norm when organizing online conferences?
Thread below on how to do this practically.
HT
@MortenORavn
(1/11) So... we're trying to do some group-introspection on what we learned from the process of blind-reviewing for the Junior VMACS conf. and getting some stats. In the meantime, I will get the boring implementation details off the way

The Nobel to Esther, Abhijit & Michael is being celebrated by development econs everywhere & rightly so. They transformed how applied research is conducted, partnered and communicated. They built institutions in a way most would have thought impossible two decades ago. Congrats!
