I'm coming up to my 7 day stretch of on calls and I'm already dreading the walk to my car after every 12.5hr shift (if I finish on time).
Can't use public transport because husband and I both start at 8, wraparound childcare starts at 7.45 and is 40-min bus journey away. 1/4

Plus, buses don't run late enough and still have to walk a mile to get one on the dark.
Security won't escort you off site.

A mere 15.5yrs following my graduation, this week I got my outcome 6 & have CCTd in General & colorectal surgery.
Thanks to all who have supported me, it's been a team effort.
Good news is that I will continue to make questionable decisions. Not clinically but defo elsewhere.

My contracted hours as a full time NHS doctor are 48hr/week AVERAGE. Some weeks I am contracted to work 84hrs. Like all NHS staff, I always finish on time because its easy to just drop tools in the middle of a life saving surgery because, well you know, that's my contract(!)

Deferring going to the loo for a wee or 💩 is possible but periods happen in ernest so can't be ignored.
So you see my problem. Hence why a wee supply of basic period products in staff loos would make life quite a lot more bearable. 5/

I have a REALLY regular cycle with the same # of days between each period. But this only gives me a 12-24hr window where my period will start and since most period products can be a bit uncomfy, especially when not menstruating, most will avoid deploying them until necessary. 2/

When I'm on call I can be anywhere between theatre, radiology, the admissions unit, endoscopy and ~30 wards including ITU.
This means that getting to the office to grab my bag isn't often possible.
I also frequently can hold off visiting a loo for 8+hrs because I'm so busy 4/

Cannot advocate for this approach enough. Please don't treat me like a child. I'm a 36 year old, married, mother of three and I know for a fact that I am more capable at most things than the pale, stale, male in front of me. He just happens to have more surgical experience.
Train your trainees, better still train your trainees to be trainers of surgeons, don’t infantilise your trainees and elevate yourself

Bit tricky to increase the capacity for in patient treatment of cancer when beds are being taken up by people with Covid-19 who need hospital treatment to prevent them from becoming one of the 1.4% who die from it (that's the IFR as opposed to the CMR of 0.3% that you've quoted)

Ask them what aspect of 'being an average doctor' they're assessing. Knowledge, clinical skills, communication, teamwork etc. It would be highly unlikely to be average at everything and everyone will have strengths and weaknesses. 1/3

In my experience, no matter which medical school you attend, by month 2 of FY all doctors are at a very similar level in all areas.
Unless they went to Newcastle Med School, in which case they are always just a little bit better!!

Whilst revising for FRCS I was really uncomfy with textbooks/question banks/resources that would say things like
"22yo MSM" often angling at risk factors for anal cancer/HIV
MSM felt dehumanising & anal cancer is more prevalent in females in the UK.

I always have a beaming grin after the case of adhesion SBO in a frail elderly pt whereby the anaesthetic team spend over an hour getting them asleep and adequately monitored. You open, find the band, release the band and close in 15 minutes.
It's such a relief!

So your dad's hospital isn't overrun. That is called an n=1. Having plenty of empty beds doesn't mean you have adequate staff to care for a patient in them. Stats don't show the real picture. Isolating is only one reason for staff absences. What about burnout, PTSD, long covid?

Post FRCS life is good.
Today my consultant trainer let me run the OP clinic, supported me throughout and gave me really good, constructive feedback at the end.

2. My main motivator to keep breastfeeding was laziness. Bottle feeding is hard whether breastmilk or formula. So the parents of bottlefed babies are defacto tougher than me.

I've recently come to resent the term junior doctor. I've been in surgical training for a decade, I'm 34 years old, a wife and a mother of 2.5 kids. Despite this, and possibly because I am a 'junior doctor', consultants think it's okay to talk to me and treat me like a child.

They're is a perception that if a clinician isn't visible then they are not working. It is this that has driven the often toxic presentee-ism that is prevalent in the NHS.
Often seniors have to get home for kids but with remote access they are still working late into the evening
