People only seem to find mental health stuff palatable when it comes from white, middle-class mouths, I’ve noticed. And even then, only illnesses like depression and anxiety. I’m yet to see psychosis or schizophrenia tackled in a nuanced, empathetic way, for example.

I’ve seen this play out at tribunal before where a white female ex-colleague said the most horrific racist things I’ve ever seen (like, genocide rhetoric) on the WORK chat system, but was still somehow judged the ‘victim’ in the scenario by the panel.

I was 14 and passed out drunk. After months, I told one friend who advised me not to ‘make trouble’ as my attacker’s mother had died the year before and ‘you were drunk anyway’. I never reported and it took me years and much therapy to even be able to call it what it was.

I’d differentiate between maths and functional numeracy, though. I taught Functional Skills in colleges to people who didn’t pass GCSE Maths and many had been failed by schools, coming in with levels of avg 8 year olds or lower. They needed numeracy, not algebra.
