Activism is not a social club. Activism is not about looking cool or morally righteous. Activism is not dunking on people. It's not when you ratio someone.
Activism is about real world change. The rest is worthless if it doesn't lead to that.
I think the worst version of this I’ve seen was the left spending a ton of political capital to try and pass gun laws, then complaining they shouldn’t be enforced because of “impacts to people of color”.
That’s not politics, its teenagers mad that dad enforces bedtime.
This, from
@mattyglesias
, which argues that contemporary trends on the far left have more spiritual DNA in common with anarchism than socialism, is one of the truest things I’ve read in a very long time
Imagine actually defending a supposed “antitrust” bill that literally says “Amazon bad, but Walmart good”.
This is as bad as Florida’s “we hate tech companies except if they they own a theme park” bill.
Dianne Feinstein rightly points out that the Senate antitrust bills will force companies like Amazon to remove Amazon Basics listings, but companies like Walmart and Target will still be able to prioritize their in-store brands on their own websites
The NDP needs to dump Singh. He’s hands down the worst major party leader of the past couple decades, and we’re including Stockwell Day in that list.

I dunk on urbanists, but NIMBYs are awful.
Sure an urbanists think that walkable distance to a bar is more important than it is, but NIMBYs think cities should be theme park frozen in time: neither the buildings nor people living there should ever change. It’s their Disneyland.
When you talk about Chinatown, the first thing you mention are the aesthetics of the buildings, not the people living in them.
As hard as you try, you are the very thing you’re running from.
“If the starting point for your argument is that the very people you need to persuade must accept that core aspects of their identity should be a source of shame rather than pride, then no well-crafted agenda of utilitarian policies is likely to win them over.”
No surprise that State Journalist and former Torontonian, Max Fawcett, are doing their best to discredit the 45% of Albertans who want a separation referendum. As support grows even larger, expect more of this trash Journalism from our State Broadcaster.

This has always been my view. The fact that there *could* have been a lab leak doesn’t match up with any actual evidence, and spillover events (or animal borne) have caused multiple pandemics in human history.
The "effort to convince them otherwise" here consists of qualified scientists and informed journalists explaining that there is no evidence for the lab leak theory and extremely strong evidence for the spillover/market theory
I think one of the interesting takeaways from both Amazon and Starbucks unions is that they have been most successful with actual local union organizing rather than by one of the big national unions (Teamsters, UFCW, etc) trying to do it as an outsider.
one of the unintended consequences of Starbucks's vicious union-busting has been the rapid transformation of a class of intelligent, empathic young baristas from merely union-curious to militant organizers, many of whom have now said the labor movement will be their life's work
People who are devoutly religious are more prone to conspiracy theories. I saw it *all the time* in right-wing catholic circles.
When you build your life on “faith in things unseen”, of course you’ll also accept bullshit like this. It’s a tautology almost.
Great work as always by
@sarahposner
, but the
@nytimes
' framing is misleading.
The heart of Sarah's story is why QAnon is taking off in evie circles, not that the occasional "respectable evangelical" is trying to stop it.
The bigger story? They have no chance of stopping it.
This was really dumb and I can’t believe we missed this.
I paid my utility bills throughout the pandemic, including when I was laid off for almost a year. Why should I pay everyone else’s bill?
UCP during COVID - “Hey Albertans, can’t pay your utilities right now? No worries! Defer the payments! You can pay them later!”
Also UCP - “If you don’t pay them, we’ll just make every other Albertans pay them for you!”

Huh, funny how tech startups gravitate towards Toronto and Vancouver.
It’s almost like taxes have nothing to do with it and it’s about quality of life issues like public transit or education. Things the UCP won’t invest in.

I don’t actually care about that conversation, I just dislike that celebrities and influencers are causing a shortage for diabetics who actually need Ozempic to control a chronic condition.
Oil and gas figured out over the past few years that they can make mega profits with less people.
They don’t exist to employ people. Oil boosters seem to have forgotten that. They exist to produce oil.
The Patch is literally gushing profit, yet the promised jobs from Kenney aren’t coming. At some point, those still unemployed in O&G have to ask him why.

Any college that does this, refuses to let people graduate due to non-academic morality policing, should be de-accredited by any affiliated bodies and loose all public funding.
This is beyond not acceptable.

Conservatives are stuck in the 1990s. We don’t have 18% interest rates to worry about.
Companies take on debt all the time to finance projects. Debt is not bad, especially when the country has a fairly stable and guaranteed source of income.
This really is a reason to live your non-Christian life out loud.
For example, I am so much more happy and my life is much more peaceful since I left religion. You don’t need it to live a happy, fulfilled life.
Many evangelicals literally pray for God to “break” their children whose life choices they disagree with, so they will be forced to “rededicate their lives to Jesus” and conform.

Always interesting watching Kenney dance between "I don't want to tell people what to do with their lives" and the fact that he's told me what I can do with mine his whole career.
Absolutely devastating to the UCP government narrative - this expert report completely contradicts their claims and reveals the UCP to be nothing but NIMBYs and anti-renewable energy.
And if you're wondering why this report wasn't released on February 29th, when the GoA announced its gongshow policies, there are many -- many -- reasons. Here's a sample re: environmental & agricultural lands:
Trad Catholics are as dangerous to the world-at-large as any dominionists. They will happily underwrite fascist ideologies as long as it advances their goals.
Why do you think right-wing Catholics are behind Trump and other modern nationalists?
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but when you let antisocial people take over public spaces, people with the means to do so retreat to private spaces (eg - public transit to cars).
The essence of urbanism is that you have shared public spaces — sidewalks, parks, libraries — that require rules and policing to maintain.
If you don’t do that, people retreat to a privatized domain of shopping malls and personal cars so they can have pleasant experiences.
Even worse, Singh’s anemic party leadership is only going to drag down the NDP in places like Alberta, Manitoba, and Ontario.
The Alberta NDP absolutely needs to take note. They’re never going to win while connected to a federal party that’s a joke.

I absolutely endorse these recommendations. I’ve previously suggested a gag rule on medical practitioners (no mentioning unless patient brings it up) is appropriate for MAID.
I wrote about why Canada's MAID policy bothers me so much.
It's not that people don't have the right to die. It's that providers and insurers have a perverse incentive to overuse MAID in order to save taxpayer money.

You know what’s funny? Progressives have spend years trying to tell people that non-physical aggression is real and bad and they were right! A women getting catcalled in public is bad and makes them feel uncomfortable.
But that principle apparently just doesn’t apply here?
This is the reason why this “Alberta over-contributes” is dumb.
Everyone in Canada gets CPP based on what they contribute. There’s simply more younger people paying in right now than older people retired in Alberta.
Why are there such large positive net contributions from Alberta residents? Consider a simple fact: young people pay into pension plans, while old people collect. Here's an illustration of the data. 👇
Evangelicals: We’re losing the youth! Hit the panic button! What do we do?
Exvangelicals: We’ll gladly tell you how you lost us.

Falwell and Graham are Christians. Full stop. That’s is not a debatable point.
If that makes you uncomfortable, maybe you should take care of the problems in your own circle before lashing out at others who are simply bringing the problem to light.

I think the one thing I’d add here is *timely* access to justice has disappeared across the Common Law world.
It should not take (eg) a year for landlord-tenant disputes to be resolved. We need a massive expansion of our judicial capacity (judges, crown prosecution, courtrooms).
What does it mean to have world-leading’ courts if they are increasingly giving up hearing ordinary cases involving ordinary people? My law column for

I used to joke on Reddit that anytime there was transit issues, “here comes the people saying we can’t be an inclusive city if we don’t let people do drugs on transit”.
It was meant to be a straw-man. But there seems to be legitimate defenders of it and I don’t understand.
People’s brains are so poisoned by identity that they seemingly forget that we police *behavior*. Drunk, mentally ill, pissed off, bored, or who knows what — you are an issue to the extent that your behavior is an issue. We police behavior.
This is child abuse. There’s no other term for it.
Just another

A Sunday school teacher told me my parents were adulterers bc they were getting divorced, and my best friend's dad was burning in hell bc he committed suicide. We were 12.
And yes, this kind of small symbolism is important. It shows the fundamentalist religious right they do not get to control the narrative and that we do not bow down to them.
The religious right is authoritarian, the biggest fuck you to them is refusing them control.
