It was real but the severity was fake. I felt extremely tired and slept for like 3 or 4 days recovering. My norm is to read or watch movies / play games if I'm sick with a fever and don't feel nauseous (I did not). So it was something. But the mortality was very low. They lied.

There's actually an answer there if it's all true, and that is abuse, sometimes the mom is in on it. They act all strict to cover for the heinous crimes they are committing. And brainwash the kid into thinking it's their fault. But that's just one possibility among many.
