Physician Scientist @CompOncMSK and Thoracic Oncologist @MSKCancerCenter Historian of Cancer Genomes | Chromosome Biology | Therapy Resistance
New York, NY
Joined January 2018
Today marks a meaningful milestone -- I am starting as a lab investigator @CompOncMSK and thoracic oncologist @MSK_DeptOfMed, focused on improving treatment through a deep understanding of cancer evolution. I'll soon be looking for fellow travelers on this mission. Stay tuned!.

A beautiful story by @FaltasLab on mutational processes in urothelial cancers. Elegant demonstration of fitness benefit of CCND1 ecDNA during chemotherapy. We will learn a lot from WGS of clinical samples re interactions btw treatment and cancer genomes. Congrats to the authors!.
🚀Big News! Excited to share our work “The Interplay of Mutagenesis and ecDNA Shapes Urothelial Cancer Evolution” published in @Nature!

So glad that I was able to participate in this wonderful multi-year team effort! #SPECIFICancer @CancerGrand @TheMarkFdn.
We’re in Barcelona for the final review meeting of the SPECIFICANCER @CancerGrand Challenges team, which we fund with @CR_UK. Since 2019, the team—which spans 9 institutions—has explored why most gene mutations only cause cancer in some tissues.

Fusion variant-specific tumor suppressors in ALK+ lung cancers. SETD2 inactivation conferred a larger impact on tumorigenesis in the context of EML4-ALK v3 (fusing exon 6 of EML4 and exon 20 of ALK) than v1 (e13-e20).
Amazing collaboration between @EmilyShuldiner and @Alberto_DiazJ using somatic genome editing to model 60 different genotypes of EML4-ALK lung cancer. Genetics say that Variant 1 and Variant 3 should be considered distinct oncogenes @SotilloLab.

@charlesrudin @natasharekhtman @SamTTweets @ChrisFebres An example of shattering three chromosomes and putting the pieces together to form 1) derivative chromosomes and 2) ecDNAs amplying oncogenes. Not a cherry-picked case, was rather a general pattern in these cases. Still surprising that this has happened early in their oncogenesis

Was lucky to join this team! A rare subgroup of SCLC originates from carcinoids. Surprisingly, their genomic hallmark was whole-chromosomal chromothripsis amplifying oncogenes. Thanks and congrats to my mentors and the leads @charlesrudin @natasharekhtman @SamTTweets @ChrisFebres.

Unexpected role of Fanconi anemia pathway in chromothripsis. It’s just incredible learning experience to follow the experimental papers since the initial description of chromothripsis in 2011. Amazing biology.
🚨 Excited to share our latest paper in @CellCellPress identifying how under-replicated chromosomes in micronuclei become shattered by the Fanconi anemia pathway during mitosis. This work was led by @UTSWGradSchool student @JustinEngel17. 🧵 (1/13):.

Wonderful opportunity to interact with the thought leaders of EGFR+ lung cancer. The inaugural meeting in 2019 motivated me to come back to clinic.
🎉 Ready to elevate your # LungCancer #Research skills & career?. Join us for #EGFRSummit in collab w/@egfrresisters & @CEC_onc. Submit your abstracts by Sept 30 & gain valuable career insights ➡ @jillfeldman4 @ZPiotrowskaMD. #LCSM #EGFR

This would not have been possible without helping hands from my mentors, collaborators, and friends at MSK. Special thanks to @SohrabShah @charlesrudin @HelenaYu923 @marcjwills_ who inspire and drive me to move forward. Thanks to @MSK_DeptOfMed for unwavering support.

7 years ago, I made the bold decision to move to the US instead of becoming clinical faculty in my home country. Through an adventurous journey, I'm getting closer to my goal. Thrilled and honored to receive @BWFUND #CAMS, which will lay the foundation for my research program!.

Why ALK fuses w/ EML4 in lung cancers and not often w/ KIF5B? We never see TMPRSS2-ALK and what's the biology behind? An exciting paper from @chiarlelab led by translocation expert @TC_Cheong. A major step forward to understand the mechanisms of SVs!
