Alan Dershowitz re:Manafort on MSNBC: "Locking someone up before they have been convicted is an anethama to liberty."
Um.
Each day an estimated 700,000 people sit in jail because they can't afford bail.
@AlanDersh
can we expect you to speak for these people as well?
Our school district is not going to have a covid dashboard this year. How do I send my 13yo to school and still keep her disabled and immune compromised sister safe? The CDC walked back mask guidance. Then they decided not to track reinfections…
It's really hard to admit that I pushed my daughter to go to swim practice and likely contributed to her worsening symptoms/disability. I don't think parents realize how easy it is to make this mistake, even if you're the most laid back parent.
🧵
When I was 24 I got CFS following Mono. Doctors told me to rest. My parents told me I was being lazy & to get a job. I moved out. I’m worried about younger trapped children now w/Long Covid whose Covid-denying, herd immunity delusional parents are dismissing & abusing them.
I can’t count the number of times I’ve been told that the pandemic is never ending, followed with “how long are supposed to do this?” (Meaning masking, etc)
Ppl have been conditioned to think it’s two extreme choices - zero safety or become a recluse.
See how this works? No one is responsible. The CDC, local govts, school districts, employers- they’re all leaning into learned helplessness. Meanwhile we’re supposed to send kids into enclosed boxes crammed full of unmasked kids…
Pay attention to the narrative about Long Covid. "Most people recover" is going to be the company line. This is how they will deny long term chronic illness from LC. This is how they erase the problem, by minimizing the duration and intensity of symptoms.
When minimizers like Ashish Jha say things like "low risk of serious illness," editors and journalists need to ask them to clarify what "serious illness" means. This is a tactic of using medical language that is poorly understood by the average person to confuse and imply no risk
Then they changed the map and the definition of community spread. Now the CDC is going to remove recommendations on testing and quarantining of kids at school. Slowly chipping away at the tools we had. Leaving parents like me to guess and stress…
So strip away all the info that we use to calculate risk. Give everyone a false sense of confidence about risks. Gaslight the whole damn country into thinking the only measurement that matters is death. And expect us to carry on as normal.
But I think it’s the first time they’ve done all this while we watch, right in front of us, on a massive scale. And we’re just… letting them. And letting them risk our kids lives and futures.
You know who doesn't get "work from home" after Covid? Kids. Attendance rules require kids to return to school even if they are still recovering.
Cognitive exertion is a risk factor for Long Covid. TBI protocols for brain rest are recommended after an infection.
#PodSaveJon
Imagine saying “all the modern tools of tracking and monitoring and testing? Nah. Let’s go back to a time when we couldn’t communicate efficiently and we didn’t have the technology to warn people.” This isn’t the first time our govt has done this, not by s long shot,
@laurenthehough
When my water broke w my 3rd baby the older two followed me around the house peppering me with questions. I’m packing, running to the bathroom as more water breaks and freaking tf out. They witnessed all of it, made up a chant called “Who Broke the Water.” Little assholes.
@Finn000000000
You getting a taste of this for the first time does not erase the breadth and frequency of misogyny-combined-with-ableism that women and women of color experience. (Hint: it starts well before we acquire a disability and in some cases is the reason for our disability)
@NateSilver538
My daughter’s doctor is an airplane ride away. She is disabled. Now we will have to drive, taking four times as long. Which, if you are disabled, is even more difficult and presents another set of problems.
A pediatrician told my friend her kid couldn't have Covid because "her lungs sounded clear."
Another friend had signs of anaphylaxis and her Dr told her it was anxiety. Turns out she has a severe pork allergy.
History past and present is riddled with children, women, PoC who
my favorite part of the weird covid discourse last night was when i was like "bernie's doctor probably told him it was fine to respond to emails while on bed rest or whatever" and instead of saying "you don't know that" the common refrain was "doctors don't know shit about covid"
For those in a twist over female speakers at the LC hearing:
LC affects almost twice as many women as men.
Pregnant women are at risk of severe complications from Covid.
Gender bias is an obstacle to healthcare.
Women are most often the caretaker of kids w Long Covid.
My daughter is now a young adult and has given me permission to share parts of her story (kids can't consent, so don't air their health issues publicly please)
Years ago she had some worrying issues, but we thought it was "normal" teen stuff.
Cause I'm telling you, even under the BEST of circumstances, it's hard to know that your kid is dealing with an ongoing infection or chronic illness post infection. When you factor in how covid has been politicized, there are kids who will suffer in truly horrific ways.
I can't express how worried and terrified I am about kids and COVID. I am the most chill parent there is, and I pushed my kid too far. How many parents are going to punish their kids? Pressure them to excel in sports, school, not knowing they are pushing them into disability?
Everyone in Long COVID and disability advocacy needs to watch The Quiet Epidemic to see how Lyme has been lied about for decades. This impacts untold number of LC patients. And every step of the Covid pandemic is echoing how Lyme was dismissed/lied about. It's the same playbook.
@Suej1959
The social team is heading to the commissioning team in the morning with a list of scandals we need to make shows about. It’s growing by the minute! 🎥
And on a personal note, my brother died of cancer at age 18 because multiple doctors and specialists said his bloodwork was normal and refused to order scans. They said he was trying to ditch school. In reality he had tumors eating his bones.
Moral? Doctors are not reliable.
I say all of this to them, point out that it’s super easy to just wear a mask in indoor spaces, that when they don’t mask they are pushing disabled people out of public spaces. That if everyone would mask the pandemic might actually end.
Blank stares. Every time.
The flag never would have come down if it hadn't been for Bree Newsome scaling the flagpole and showing the world what courage looks like. Haley had the flag flying again before Newsome could post bail...
@isaiah_bb
It's pretty well known that it takes an average of 17 years for new info from research to be applied to medical practice. Unless doctors are actively seeking the latest keeping up with studies, they actually know very little about COVID and almost nothing about Long Covid.
@MaggieAstor
@Rarasaur
Exactly my thoughts. How many people on these flights were flying to get cancer treatment, going to visit a vulnerable loved one, or were immune compromised themselves.
But I didn't recognize it in her because
- everyone is different
- kids can present differently than adults
- recognition depends on how well the kid is able to communicate symptoms and how the parent will receive it
@JustinBamberg
I had this ultrasound with my third child and it is not easy or comfortable. I can’t imagine having just survived a sexual assault and being forced to have this done. It would absolutely compound the trauma.
Another barrier to recognizing a potential chronic illness from infection in kids?
They often assume what they're experiencing is "normal kid/teen stuff."
Adults know "something is not right" when we start feeling chronic symptoms.
@NateSilver538
My husband flies every week. Universal masking has kept him covid free. Now my daughter will be at risk in her own home He’ll have to mask in the home until covid recedes. And then resume masking in the home during future surges.
It starts gradually and as a parent you try to find a balance between addressing things like anxiety, school avoidance, being tired all the time, without jumping to the worst conclusions. You want to be empathetic but not alarmist.
Dear
@KamalaHarris
staffers, pls record her doing this at every stop. I saw her Friday night in SC and her speech/Town Hall was amazing. But her convo with a group of us from Moms Demand was inspiring and left me in tears.
Loved this exchange w/ Sadie in Keene, NH, who wanted advice from
@KamalaHarris
on being a good public speaker.
”Have you learned about the Titanic?”...
And what they don’t realize is they have bought into the propaganda they used to mock conservatives for. That they are embracing white supremacy with their apathy towards collective safety.
And deep down they know something’s not adding up. But they will never admit it.
Let me add that I was diagnosed with ME/CFS when she was a toddler, so I understand what fatigue and PEM and nervous system disregulation feels like. I know that there is no "good attitude" that will fix those symptoms.
And this is me with personal post viral experience, with privilege to get the care she needs. I dropped everything to get her the care she needed. How many parents are going to have the privilege, the access and the option to do this?
COVID protections are a social justice issue.
Protections to reduce Long COVID are a social justice issue. I see too many people who say they are invested in equity who are minimizing the need for protections.
New graphs on CDC Data Tracker: COVID death trends by race/ethnicity & age groups
Native American, Hispanic, & Black people are getting hit hardest & youngest, again & again
➡️Leaders from these pops should be in the room for COVID policy decisions
Covid is causing PANS. Every covid minimizer should have to listen to PANS parents describe what these kids are going through. It will shake you to your core.
(Adults can get PANS too, FYI.)
Covid19 May Increase Risk of Psychosis; 51.4% of adolescents had at least 1 psychotic experience in covid19 pandemic; risk of having psychotic experience was⬆️in adolescents who have had mental disorder, those with chronic illness, adolescent infected
So my kid was having all these vague symptoms that would come and go. Otherwise her annual check ups were normal. The assumption was she was very healthy.
But this is where the "stealth" in stealth pathogens come in.
By the time she was diagnosed we were in crisis mode. She couldn't go to school, old barely get through online classes. Years later and we're still trying to get her back to something close to her "normal" baseline.
But by the time I realized something was wrong, that it was more than typical developmental ups and downs, I'd already pushed her too far. She loved swim team, so even when she was having those early symptoms I pushed her to go. I didn't connect the crashes 2 days later...
are gaslit about medical issues.
Another friend w terminal brain cancer was told she probably was in pain due to her weight.
Your fairy tale child-like view of what doctors do and don't know would be cute if it weren't part of the problem.
#PodSaveJon
We found out a few years after her symptoms started that she had chronic Lyme. Her symptoms became more frequent, more intense, new symptoms popped up. We began searching for doctors to help. We're lucky that it only took us a few years to get a diagnosis. But..
"We can no longer claim to "have the tools" when COVID tests are not free or accurate, when vaccines are outpaced by an evolving virus. And those with privilege can rest and recover while others have to work through illness, increasing their risk for disability due to LC... "
They have been fed this for two years now. Masking/covid safety has been portrayed as wildly paranoid and silly. The implication is that we’re all still wiping down groceries.
It’s very subversive disinformation and propaganda.
THIS IS A CALL TO ACTION:
We need every disability and Long Covid advocacy account to tweet and tag
@UCSFHospitals
and demand that N95 masks are worn and they take every measure to protect Alice from Covid and all airborne infections. PLEASE TWEET AND PASS IT ON.
What is wild is how many times these conversations happen when I am in social situations - either masked or outside in non crowded spaces. Like - I am showing you that there’s a way to have a full life with the easiest safety measures ever.
We want him to lead and speak truth to power. "I have tested positive and each infection increases the risk of Long Covid. Mask mandates in public spaces are urgently needed. It's our moral imperative to protect the long term health of ALL in an ongoing pandemic... "
#PodSaveJon
While Ted Cruz was trolling his coed dorm in a paisley bathrobe creeping out female residents, Beto was... the hot band guy. Well played Texas GOP twitter.
The message that ppl who were formerly cautious have absorbed is that masking after vaccinations and boosters is pandemic hypochondria. Liberals/progressives and ppl who consider themselves anti white supremacy look at us with concern and pity.
Western Medicine is very tied to authoritarian dogma.
Don't question, follow guidelines, if higher ups say something, nod dutifully.
Doctors get blackballed if they step outside of what is "accepted" medicine. Immense peer pressure. So no, they aren't questioning the CDC.
Witnessing the full throated ableism on the left feels similar to watching Covid disable 1/4 of the population. We see it, we know it's going to implode all over elections for decades to come, but they are so smug in their ignorance that they can't see the damage.
#PodSaveJon
The new Influencer CDC Director. Fun! Relatable! Pop culture reference! Toxic positivity! No concern for icky stuff. Like a mass disabling event her organization is enabling.
Had a great time meeting with staff today from across
@CDCgov
. We chatted about what makes CDC a special place to work, lifesaving programmatic efforts, and finding joy. Oh, and Barbie!
@NateSilver538
You have no idea the burden on disabled people right now. You could, but that would mean listening to disabled people. Also, stats guy, run some numbers on the future burden of disability
"Serious illness" in medical terms means "high risk of mortality and impacts functioning." But the public assumes it means low risk of disability or long term effects. The msg is don't worry about Long Covid, and is misleading. Jha knew what he was doing in that op-ed.
Because a fellow liberal/progressive is saying something that contradicts what a “liberal” govt is telling them. And believing me is admitting they were duped and they are highly invested in being right.
White House press corps needs to ask these questions until they get clear answers and ask why there are differences in infection protocols for Biden vs our kids in schools.
Is the
@WhiteHouse
following the new
@CDCgov
guidance for COVID isolation? Are people allowed to meet with
@POTUS
in person after only one day isolation with COVID-19?
I highly doubt it.
@SofieHagen
It's called "sudden divorce syndrome." I wrote about it a few years ago. It also goes back to the fact that men don't believe women, that our experiences are always suspect.
@jonfavs
@PodSaveAmerica
The Democratic Party has vastly underestimated the rage of the disabled community. That's how ableism works. You erase them from society, ignore their prescient thoughts, and expect them to still show up.
Your ableism will be your downfall.
#PodSaveJon
The party of "womp womp" and mocking disabilities and grabbing pussies and assaulting reporters and voting for child molesters and calling all Mexicans rapists and cheering a poem likening all immigrants to a snake is... not the party that pundits are calling on to be civil?
This dangerous disinformation can be prevented if Editors and journalists insist on these things being clarified, asking about the risks of Long Covid. Ask Jha why we "don't need to worry" when one in five will get LC from repeat infections. Ask him about limitations of Paxlovid.
I knew conservatives viewed my kid as expendable. But it took Biden's Covid response for me to realize that liberals are the same when it comes to ableism. Call me naive, but the ease and comfort liberals feel about excluding disabled people from society has been shocking.
Ask him about lack of access to antivirals, covid tests Ask him how does a "vaccine only, you do you, every man for himself" approach work for those who can't get vaccinated? Ask him about the disabled people left behind by "vax and relax." But don't just let him publish lies.
@mattyglesias
Sigh. People who actually live with or work with teens know that there are dozens of reasons for depression/anxiety. Anyone who tries to pin it down in simple terms is very obviously missing all the marks. Social media can be a lifeline for isolated teens, toxic for others.
I just cannot fathom a situation where Alice Freaking Wong educates you for free and wants to talk to you and you hide her reply and ignore her. Do you also let Beyoncé go to voicemail??
I've been a Democrat my whole life. I've volunteered most election cycles. I left the Dem party after "pandemic of the unvaccinated" and the party was silent. Voting for harm reduction has a nice ring to it, but has the party thought about how that lands w disabled voters?
I'd love to hear a Dem podcast discuss how they plan to win back the votes of the disabled people they've left for dead the past 4 yrs.
A smart party would be assessing the size of this risk to their 2024 electoral hopes. Have
@PodSaveAmerica
run numbers yet on this?

Folllowed by applause at House hearing. Wow.
@JillFilipovic
But the fact that we don't value the WORK of parenting is the problem. The fact that every time there's a conversation about this I feel the need to list my accomplishments outside of parenting is a problem.
This is what decades of denying Lyme and ME gets you - people running a major study have no fucking clue what they are doing and are wildly unqualified to lead it. Appointing someone who has zero experience in infection triggered chronic illness is madness.
@loscharlos
@NIH
One of the RECOVER PIs, who never worked with post-viral syndrome patients before told an MD friend of mine the kids didn’t need treatment because they all recover. This is someone in charge of a billion dollar study to try to figure out Long COVID. Way to pick a winner

@Mssarahmssarah
Neuroinflammation from Covid and/or other pathogens reactivated by covid are absolutely a factor in some cases. We won’t know how many for decades probably. Neuronflammation can present a number of different ways from mild to extreme.
Long Covid community: Full evaluation for Lyme needs to be part of the LC assessment.
*most Lyme patients don’t remember being bitten by a tick.
*Lyme is an opportunistic infection. Covid is the weakening of immunity that brings Lyme out of hiding in some cases.
I think ppl underestimate the role of reactivated
#Lyme
& Bartonella in
#LongCovid
(many dont know they have either). Lots of focus on
#EBV
may be missing this. When I interviewed
@microbeminded2
recently (released soon) she said, “first things to rule out w LC are Lyme/ bart.”
Imagine for a minute if they were saying this about any other marginalized group. The left has a LOT of work to do in equity and allyship overall, but the mockery of disabled people's concerns is... gleeful? Like, they are enjoying mocking us?
When public health personalities minimize the risks of long COVID based on flawed studies, kids are harmed. We need community informed public health communication, responsibility, and humility from public personas analyzing risk. More here:

Even empathetic loving parents will push their kids, unaware that what looks like "laziness" or apathy is actually PEM. And what looks like rage/anxiety/behavior issues might be covid induced PANS.
@RaviHVJ
When I tell people about the story of Lyme in the US and the role of the CDC and the IDSA they don’t believe me. Even though there are multiple award winning documentaries detailing it powerfully.
I have a lot to say about this so buckle up. But first, read this harrowing thread by
@LongCovidFam
.
The apathy re: kids w Long Covid has ripple effects that are destroying families and kids' lives. I'm not just talking @ the media, but the long covid activist community too.
@cezarmcknight
The same hormone therapy is given to non trans kids all the time. It's a medical treatment, not a cosmetic procedure. It's not permanent. Please don't support a bill that attacks transgender kids. This is beyond cruel. If your intentions are good, please reach out to learn more.
Women are more likely to be pushed out of the workforce when a child has LC.
Many women report worsening LC symptoms around their menstrual cycle.
No one has said that LC doesn't affect men and the faux outrage over five immensely qualified female speakers is ridiculous.
Kids cannot consent to taking covid risks. They are at the mercy of the adults in their lives (and the privilege of their families) to keep them safe.
Maybe you went to a concert or restaurant and got covid. You made a choice with the info you had. Kids don't get that choice.
@NateSilver538
I hate to break it to ya, but we're ALL in a "special circumstance." We're dealing with a highly infectious virus that you can spread before you know you have it. Vaccinated or not. Messages like yours are the opposite of what we need to do if we ever want to have normal again.
@TinyWriterLaura
My take was that there is an entitlement among those who have never had to alter their life in major ways, who never had to think about the collective. And those brief months of lock down made them feel like they are owed ease & convenience in every way, no matter who it affects.
@ahandvanish
You look 🔥🔥🔥 and congrats on Time 100!
Also, we should start doing this, take selfies of us dressed for the events we’re missing due to ableist policies and post them on twitter. And I mean ALL events. School, conventions, awards ceremonies.
@danaparish
@CDCgov
It is shocking to me how many people who were so careful about covid previously are now fine with these new policies and no masking in schools. The manufactured consent for mass illness and disability was incredibly effective.
They will never admit they disabled a whole generation of kids. Once people go this far down a dehumanizing path they double down. They will even convince themselves of the lies they told.
In the early 90s chronic Lyme was recognized, there was grave concern. Then... erasure.
@NjbBari3
Seeing lots of parents in LC groups describe PANS symptoms. It’s the thing I worry about most. Lots of kids are going to be treated as behavioral problems, some criminalized, because of undiagnosed PANS/Long Covid.
