During this crisis we have seen a Dutch mininster collapse in exhaustion, and now a German state minister take his own life. We should not take for granted the limitless ability of those in leadership positions to absorb stress. We are all human. They need our support.
@Gilleeece
He's exercising his right to free speech Emma. The idea of democracy is that people can make up their own minds about what he says and vote accordingly.
The people signed letters to TDs, which will be sent on Monday, asking them to sign the Bill drafted by our CEO and Founder Laoise De Brún BL and introduced to the Dáil by Peadar Tóibín TD. We were delighted to meet Deputy Willie O'Dea, who has offered his full support and

I guess you are afraid of debate because your ideas don't stand up to scrutiny and people might think for themselves about what they hear. You act like the fascists you claim to hate.

James and Helen are clearly distinguishable from the far right, in that they oppose authoritarianism, and the worst excesses of identity politics, on both ends of the political spectrum. Maybe read the book before trashing it?
And of course, it should go without saying, our frontline workers are enduring traumatic levels of stress. We need to look after them for years after this.
This is one of those days when cynicism can take a back seat.

It's a nice aim, but your approach is naive. Free speech (once a value of the left) is the life-blood of democracy. Bad speech is best combatted by more speech. Too much power in the hands of the state to adjudicate on speech represents a danger to us all.
Can’t believe what I’m witnessing now with the Hate Speech legislation from FG & FF reps on

Bill aims to protect the most vulnerable groups in Irish society.
Too vulnerable to be political powerful in their eyes it would appear.

I must have expressed that badly. I don't care who pride partners with, they don't get to dictate what can be debated on Joe Duffy. We live in a democracy.
This week I resigned from the Green Party.
I will continue to support action at all levels to deal with the climate and biodiversity emergencies. I commend the

To call into question the right of a group of people to exist would be a crime. To accuse someone of something so serious requires evidence. Using these terms casually is irresponsible, and undermines your credibility as a civil rights advocate.
I'm at the

meeting. Because the council voted in August to reduce LPT by 15% we have lost €7.8m in discretionary expenditure. This could have made a huge difference in the quality of life in our county, in recent times it was spent on:
Public Consultation: We've been using the Irish version for 100 years. But shouldn't we be more inclusive? What should we call our county town going forward?

They are about hopelessness in the face of occupation and blockade by a vastly stronger power. The actions of Israel and the US do not suggest an interest in a peaceful resolution.
@saoirse_mchugh
@ColetteColfer
No one is suggesting that; they should probably not be partnered with a national broadaster if they think it should give them editorial input. There is a constant expansion of the idea of hate speech and phobias with a view to chilling normal political speech.

Not a fan of gript , but they do ask questions that others don't, especially when open goals are presented. Disinformation is not the sole preserve of the right. We need pluralist sources of media, the public can make their own mind up.

It's quite bizarre that so called allies just run from debate and rattle off mantras, instead of seeking to rationally establish understanding. It's actually counterproductive.

Critics of gender ideology are found across the spectrum. At events I have attended so far, all the participants I talked to were liberal feminists, most with experience campaigning for gay rights and womens rights. The far right slur is getting lazy.
@liamherrick
I think McDowell was implying that these kind of street events attract loonies on both sides, usually looking for their opposite numbers. There were plenty of sane people at Let Women Speak who should be heard.
You are afraid to debate the issues raised by letting people change sex by self id, so you have to project the worst on anyone who disagrees. Constant ad hominem, guilt by association, slurs and innuendo. You have no arguments.

You have a weird idea of expertise and what it involves. I live in a democracy and am an elected politician. Discussion is my business and I won't be told to shut up, thanks. I don't know what you are insinuating with your last comment.

I think all the things brought up on Joe Duffy should be debated, so many open issues for society to work through. For instance, should sex categories as well as gender have some status in law?
@Chris_Noone_
Assuming children are trans is the wrong starting point. Gender issues can be symptomatic of other problems, and a broader approach is needed, say Cass. "Gender specialists" have an interest in creating demand for their own services.
It's easy to smear gender critical views as right wing. (So many lazy tropes in this article.) Feminist concerns about gender ideology are gender non-conformist, based on the reality of biological sex, and see to balance rights of vulnerable groups.

What age is the right cut off for consent to mastectomies? How do we decide when puberty blockers are appropriate? Should we allow biological males in women's sport? Sex segregated prisons. Should all be debated.
I'm a liberal on the left. Free speech, and intellectual diversity, are important values for me. I welcome disagreement and respect people who do not share my views. I lose respect for people who try to shut me up and stop expressing my thoughts.
I am shocked and appalled at the violent death of Azzam Raguragui in Churchtown yesterday. I know everyone in the area wishes deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

Policing political speech is a dangerous road to go down. Most people can see your man for the dose he is, you don't need someone on high making their decisions for them.
@SeanKellyMEP
Sorry, but we actually have policies and outcomes we care about, we're not just there to make up the numbers.
@cathmartingreen
is 100% right in her approach.
@LunaLiboni
Could you give examples of speech you think should be criminalized? Reading an ILGA report I am shocked that a thoughtful person like Stella O'Malley is listed. This seems like dangerous over-reach and raises my hackles as a liberal. +I'm in your community apparently.
Climate justice means facing the fact that the poorest on the planet are already suffering from the effects of our manner of consumption. We cannot put off climate action until we get perfect justice within our wealthy nation state.
No matter how many times you put the word debate into inverted commas, I won't be giving up my right to hear the views of Irish women on matters that concern them.
Some very fine people were at the

I probably disagree with much of Mark's views. But the principle of free speech is worth defending though. If we don't have freedom of speech for academics, we are in serious trouble. Chilling of expression will eventually impact on learning and research.

What opinions on Joe Duffy were so heinous? I bet a tenner you won't list them. Anyway, I have no problem debating racist nutters. I'm confident of my arguments. I think you are not confident of yours.
He's right again. Liberal democracy is based on the state leaving the choice of the good life to citizens and communities. Making a new secular religion dominant will result in fragmentation and backlash.
Hint: if you show up to an event specifically to yell and scream abuse at a small group of women talking about their rights and safeguarding, you're not one of the good guys.

I felt these projects really made a difference at a time when people have relied heavily on their local public realm. It is sad to see councillors reducing their own capacity to make a such an impact.

The current generation of left wing students seem given to puerile purity games. They remind me of the religious authoritarians the left of my generation fought against. I've lost patience with them.
@Rusalka343
Yes, that is a skill we should encourage. You could be running on adrenaline for quite a while and then hit a wall. This is a group effort, we need to all support each other.
@Elaine_Loughlin
Most trans women (just like most men) are not abusive. It's a small set of cases, but a valid concern for vulnerable women, far from absurd. You can both support trans people and address those fears.
Sad to see this from an organisation once committed to pluralism and free speech. Slogans repeated ad nauseam, dogmatic intolerance and dismissal of women's concerns, reminiscent of the religion that once dominated this country .
Labour Youth and Labour LGBT stand in solidarity with the transgender, non-binary, and intersex community and reiterate that their lives are not a topic to be debated, but they are to be accepted and loved within our society. Trans rights are human rights."
