The decision of Simon Harris to direct FG councillors to oppose the nomination of all independent candidates for the Presidency & Oireachtas members to not sign Maria Steen’s nomination papers was not merely an exercise in political hubris but also subconsciously acknowledged

I’m sick to death of hearing this same inane wittering about “returning to core values,” from @FineGael for the last decade. You have no core values left to return to. What matters to you is milking an aged & dwindling 18-20% support for all the pensions you can get #Aras25

Fine Gael's David Maxwell tells RTÉ that the party "needs to get back to our core values" He states that the budget did "nothing for our core vote" or "people who get up early in the morning" 👀

Fascinating watching many clinging to the fact that it might not be the lowest Presidential election turnout in history. When you combine it with the spoiled ballots and Gavin’s vote, almost two thirds of the electorate stayed home, spoiled or voted for a candidate no longer in

The left will celebrate, as they should, they will hold the Presidency for another 7 years. But easily the greatest thing about spoiled the vote is that you can sense the frustration from establishment figures that they have to acknowledge the people they wanted disenfranchised.

The sheer number of spoiled votes across the country. 🥹 Serious signs of life. You have to love the absolute Irishness of it.

Helen McEntee describing spoiling one's vote as "not using your vote correctly" is stunning. They still don't get it - they're really going to try 'business as usual'...again. #Aras25

This election has been a defeat for democracy and a defeat for politics with so many spoilt votes and so many staying at home.

Apart from the obvious winner, it’s a good day for County Councillors and their right to nominate candidates for the presidency. Party leaders would do well to interfere as little as possible with this prerogative, in light of today’s results.

Covering Dublin Midwest for Presidential election. Early tallies here, unsurprisingly, have Catherine Connolly out in front. But the big story is the number of spoiled votes. Currently sitting in second.

We do not need to know if you spoiled vote today-your choice but the rest of us don’t need to know. Your vote will be counted but discarded-it is not some heroic act like going out on barricades in 19th century to fight for democracy. It is a luxury in a free country -be glad

After weeks of gaslighting about it being anti-democratic and would not register on Election Day, it turns out that spoiling your vote was a powerful and effective way to send a message to the political establishment that they turned this election into a farce. Go figure. #Aras25
